As a result of the Cotto vs. Mayorga fight coming to fruition, I started to rewatch some of Mayorga's major bouts. Now, it had been a while since I had seen this one and could not remember how I scored it. After rewatching, I think Forrest won that fight 115-113.
To me, it's interesting to think that this fight might have prevented the Cotto-Mayorga fight from happening. Had Forrest won this one, I think Mayorga might have fallen into obscurity and would have been a "one hit wonder". Any thoughts regarding the subject?
I tend to favor substance over style, so I scored it for Forrest, 115-113, when I first saw it live and then much later when I recently revisited it. Neither guy looked particularly good, but I thought Forrest's punches were landing much cleaner and Mayorga's were mostly getting partially blocked.
George Foreman and Harold Lederman had a strong bias towards Mayorga in the way they were announcing the fight, so it wouldn't surprise me if most people who saw it on TV thought Mayorga won.
So, by now, it could be concluded that most saw Mayorga as the winner. However, I noticed some voted for Vernon, so it was still debatable and one of those close fights with very subjective scoring. It's one of those "what do you like" type of fights.
Seems like most choose Mayorga as the winner. Those who said they want to watch it again, it's on youtube. Hurry up and watch or save it before they take it down and make sure to post your reactions regarding the fight afterwards.
Mayorga definately won. I think Forrest boxed well in spots, but was so intimidated by Mayorga he wasn't able to show his best. I'll have to watch this fight again though. It's been years. This kinda shows what a beast Mayorga was back then because Forrest was so much more talented than him. I wish Mayorga/SSM woulda been made back then. Would have been a war.
Pretty close fight that I thought Mayorga pulled out by a round or two primarily because of Forrest's reeling around the ring to even blocked shots.
But that was one of the most entertaining fights that I've seen. I was watching it in a big hotel bar/lobby and as people would walk by they would stop and check out the fight and then end up calling someone over and taking a seat. We started with like 6 people watching the Zab/Chop Chop fight then by the end of Forrest/Mayorga we were like 30-35 deep. Prime Mayorga was that entertaining.
I thought Mayorga legitimately won the rematch, close fight. could have been a draw.
It was Forrests' fight for the taking honestly. he could have easily won it, simply with jabs and especially body shots late in the fight, but I think Mayorga had him scared.
you really saw fear in him, even when he could have had the fight in his hands.
I think you should def watch again.
you should also watch that fight againn and you will see that ***** ass lunatic ass mayorga was definitely in control, lol, ricardo marga won clearly but hes still gay, lol, nyahahahaha
rest in peace vernon
I think Mayorga won handily...I think Forrest was just shook, mentally. Nothing he can do can hurt Mayorga, and i think it got to him, plus flashbacks of the first fight may have entered his mind as he looked confused throughout the fight.
At no point was Forrest ever in control IMO.
Now I feel like catching a torrent of the fight.
If only Mayorga could get another crack at Spinks, to avenge that travesty
I think you should def watch again.
It's been a while since I watched but I remember it being a close fight that could've gone either way. I also remember that Forrest actually boxed beautiful, perhaps the best boxing I've seen from him ever in his career. It's a shame it was overshadowed by his blatant fear of Mayorga and was pushed around. He did some great things in the ring that night.
mayorga is a ****in stupid retard who reminds me of floyd gayweather jr but you cant punish his stupidity by trying to deceive others into believing that mayorga lost to vernon forrest, lol, nyahahahahaha
Rest in peace champ, rest in peace vernon,
you can go to hell ricardo mayorga
Stupid troll alert here.
I agree completely with all of this.

Youtube has the fight in very good shape and you can download from there and still preserve very solid quality.
About the fight, I think Mayorga looked more dominant in the rounds he won but, round by round, I had Forrest 7 to 5. By the way, I think Mayorga outpointed Spinks 114-112, deductions included.

I thought Forrest won when I watched it live. Since then, I've sometimes scored it a draw and sometimes to Forrest 115-113. I don't think either guy could have won it wider than 115-113. Forrest's balance killed him in this fight. Every time Mayorga hit his glove (not a scoring blow), he flopped all over the ring. Otherwise, he would have gotten the decision.
I voted for Mayorga
I saw both fights live on HBO years ago and after the first fight I figured that Forrest would make adjustments and destroy Mayorga in the second fight.
But Forrest did not get over the mental hurdles that Mayorga presented and lost the fight. I remember the HBO commentators where discussing that their was no way that Mayorga would last twelve full rounds (based on his excessive smoking etc) but he did and what a fight it was
RIP Forrest
