The WBC pushes Sergio Martinez into Emeritus position, allowing Chavez Jr. to fight for WBC title against Zbik
The World Boxing Council (WBC) is proud to announce the appointment of Sergio Martinez as Emeritus Champion. Sergio Martinez is a two-time world champion, as he conquered the WBC super welterweight championship and then defeated great champion Kelly Pavlik to conquer the WBC middleweight championship.
He then defeated Paul Williams with a dramatic “Knockout of the Year.”
Sergio Martinez is a true example for the youth outside the ring and is constantly active in the WBC Cares Program, visiting children’s hospitals, underprivileged children’s housing, and has a formal company in support of abused women making him a true influence all around the world.
With Sergio Martinez’ designation as Emeritus Champion and Ambassador of Good Will and Peace, WBC interim champion Sebastian Zbik of Germany becomes the WBC world middleweight champion and must face the mandatory contender Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.
wbc=we be crooks
I know dudes don't care about belts but this is straight up bullsh1t. They found a way to garbage azz jr. The belt.
off topic: Nice avy. When Toney ruled the world
Who cares. Hes still Ring Champ.
That is true, but what it means for boxing historians is title defenses become less meaningful when trying to evaluate a fighters career. What does it mean to defend a belt from a corrupt sanctioning body?
I am pretty sure they are not.
I can perfectly understand that Martinez is looking for the big money fights, but if the WBC is to preserve the little integrity they have left, then they should strip Sergio. At least that's how I see it with the info at hand.
lol at BatNelson for using the words WBC and Integrity in the same sentence:rofl:
thanks for the info
Do you know if HBO were interested in that fight?

I don't even know what Emeritus position means, but it doesn't really matter since Serigio holds the one belt that really matters, the Ring belt.
I think it means that if you come out of retirement you are entitled to a title shot.Maybe Martinez is a retired without knowing about it............
The decent thing to do would be to strip him for failing to fullfill his mandatory obligations.
2010-04-17 159½ Kelly Pavlik
He still had three months to make a mandatory defense. Who did they want him to fight?
When they wanted Pac to fight for an eight title, they made Martinez drop his belt.
He did? Why would he do that for a fight that never even got past the rumor stage?
His only obligations to them would be to pay 2% of his purse as a sanctioning fee everytime he fights and to fight his wbc mando within a 12 month period.
They just want him out of the way so that Chavez can get a title

Why wont WBC strip him for failing to fullfill his obligations as their champion?
