By William Mackay: Marcos Maidana (29-2, 27 KO’s) may have come up short on the score cards in his 12 round decision loss to WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (24-1, 17 KO’s) on December 11th, but Maidana badly beat up Khan and had him hurt and holding on in the last three rounds of the fight. Had there been more rounds or if he had hurt Khan a little earlier in the fight, I think he would have knocked Khan out.
But in looking at the faces of the two fighters afterwards, it’s pretty clear who the real winner of this fight was – it was Maidana. His face looked almost totally unmarked, looking as if he had just finished a long run. Of course, Maidana was sweating because he was forced to chase the constantly running Khan from the 1st round until the very last. Khan ran like like no tomorrow from Maidana. I hadn’t seen running like that in a long time, and it was just awful to look at, especially since Khan was supposed to be a future star.
I don’t know about you, but that’s not how stars are supposed to fight. Khan’s face looked badly beaten, as if he had fallen out of a car at a high speed. He looked terrible, black and blue. There’s no question that Khan got beat up by Maidana and was just trying to survive in the last three rounds of the fight.
The bout reminded me of an old playground fight I saw when I was a child where one guy started getting beaten up and was just trying to hold on to keep the other guy from landing so many shots. It was sad to watch, because the guy kept looking at us to step and save him while he was getting pounded on. The Khan-Maidana fight was just like that from the 10 round on. But in this case, Khan was saved by referee Joe Cortez, who frequently stepped in to pull Maidana off of Khan will he was pounding the stuffing out of him on the inside.
That may have saved Khan from getting knocked out. Khan’s face went from being unmarked in the 10th to looking like Frankenstein’s monster by the end of the fight in the 12th. He really got beat up something fierce by Maidana. I’d like to think there will be a rematch someday between Maidana and Khan, but I can’t see Khan ever being put in with Maidana again. I think Maidana would start in where he left off and begin pummeling Khan again in a second fight.
also those who argue against cortez should learn the rules of boxing, sure there was maybe one time cortez stopped maidana when one hand was free but the other times he was stopping maidana from throwing rabbit punches which was the correct thing to do
disgraceful article, ignoring the fact khan gave maidana a beat down in the first 8 rounds of the fight, also the fact khan landed more hits and so on
sure khan was on his bike for the 10th and 11th round but certainly was not in the 12th
haters will hate
Cortez did the right thing in round 10, he stopped Maidana from hitting Khan cleanly on the back of the head. Rabbit punches are illegal, maybe the thread starter would have preferred to have another Gerald Mclellan incident instead? Maidana fought like a piece of ****, he was continuously hitting khan behind the head, using his elbows, and even swung for him when Khan went to touch gloves at the start of the fight.
I'm not really a fan of Khan, but this article is bull****. Khan clearly won the fight, and no credible boxing writer would claim that a fighter deserved to win a fight because the other was more marked up. The fact that Cortez is being criticised by mainly American posters for not allowing Maidana to hold stinks of hypocrisy. Its likely that the same posters were among those who criticised Hatton for his fighting style.
I agree, absolutely retarded statement.
I also think it's retarded to moan that Maidana was winded throughout the fight because of the bodyshot. Oh right, well in that case then you've just wiped the whole point of boxing off the face of the planet. Winning against your opponent is an accumulation of punches, THAT'S WHAT BOXING IS!!
As far as i'm concerned if Khan had Maidana in the same position Cortez would of stepped in to stop it...
As far as the Hatton debate goes, he was allowed to work on the inside in the first few rounds but he abused that by rabbit punching. So Cortez probably assumed all his inside work would consist of that, so broke them accordingly. I didn't have too much of a problem with that fight, just gutted Hatton lost.

Are people still moaning about this fight...?
1. Khan took Maidana out with a sweet bodyshot. Guess what guys...it's within the rules of boxing!..that is, to take your opponent out as quickly as possible. If Maidana left himself open..it's his fault!! he paid the consequences. To me that's like saying if fighter A didn't get knocked out he could have won the fight.....I mean WTF???
2. Khan took some huge uppercuts (willingly) to prove he had a chin. He took huge shots from Maidana, the biggest puncher in the division...that probably if not all of the division would have been buzzed with..not just Amir.
3. Khan landed twice as many shots
4. Maidana just tried to land power punches for 12 rounds and didn't box. Fair enough, if that was his gameplan..his gameplan failed.
5. Cortez was biased to both fighters at different stages of the fight. But i do agree he is a sh1t ref.
Khan won the fight. Move on.
LEGEND!!!!
Cut this thread off like a Jewish Peniiii!!!!!

Khan won a close fight. Maidana had the chance to finish Khan but he didn't. Khan ran but what else was he suppose to do? Stand there, and let Maidana tee off? Khan just has bad defense, so he had no viable option.
No. Get over it, quit crying.
Thats pretty much what I was trying to say!!!
Dr Orgy, your probably right, Rene would win the Rematch IMO, he wasnt prepared for Khan to attack him so early on, I think he planned for Khan to run the whole fight, but he held his own for the first half to shock Rene.
If Khans people are smart, they will Keep Amir away from Rene for a rematch, Amir has nothing to gain from this.
Still, I wouldnt mind seeing Khan getting smacked around again LOL!!!

Cortez is always too involving in fights:

Very true, but for the Khan fight, the part of the fight we are talking about, I think Cortez did his job fine, he stopped Khan from getting Rabbit raped by Rene.
I don't believe in coinsidence lol, my friend that was by design. Cortez was brought in to protect Amere Con and anybody with eyes who watched the fight could see that.
LOL... I hate Cortez as much as you do pal, but IMHO he was doing his job for those few seconds. He still sucks as a ref. If Amir didnt have his back turned so much, then I'd completly agree that Cortez was trying to save Khan, but because Khans back was turned, its my opinion that he was just trying to stop Rene from rabbit punching Khans brains out of his nose.
You don't pick the winner of the fight by merely looking at the faces at the end. Amir's face swells up more easily. Een Paulie swolled Amirs face up. The fact remains that Amir won more rounds.
Amir even won round 11 IMO so the writer is wrong by saying that Amir was holding on in the last 3 rounds. Even round 12 is debatable.
Exactly, look at Clottey vs Pac, Pac looked like he lost the fight at the end with all the bruises on his face, but we ALL know who won that, Pac raped him. So this theory sucks dont it Waz me ole pal!!!
Your BLIND, Khan had his back turned at one point and Rene tried to hit him from behind, Cortez stepped in. It was coinsidence that it was at the same time Khan was wobbled. Cortez would of done the same even if Khan had just put Maidana on the floor, if Rene got up for the count and then the same thing played out (Khan having his back turned slightly, then Maidana still trying to punch him) then Cortez would of stepped in like he did aswell.

I mean to break them up when Maidana was clearly seconds away from KTFO of Con is pure robbery. Plus he took points away from Maidana and barely said a word to Khan for excessive clinching.
im sure they'll fight again and marcos will finish em next time................
Watch round 10 again you will see amir clearly clinging to Maidana's right arm with both arms one punch from being KTFO. While Maidana's left is free and clubbing him then Cortez wraps Marcos up and gives Khan time to rest and recover. Clearly saving the fight for the hype job.
Thats called Clinching, its a technique used when fighters are in trouble. EG, watch Floyd vs Shane round two, Floyd gets rocked, he grabs hold and clinches. Its clever and shows the fighter is experienced.
