it protects the body and head at the same time..ive never seen someone fight out of that style get hurt to the body
It requires great reflexes and timing, and also makes it difficult to lead with any left handed punch such as a jab or a left hook unless the fighter also has alot of speed.
Philly shell is something you do when you're completely on the defensive. 70% of your defense is the stance, and 28% is your movement, the rest is based on the way you cover up (which really doesn't happen often, this is the the Fight Night video games). A basic stance that preps for Philly shell normally has the front hand low and at the waist and the back hand near the chin. To execute an offense from that position is hard and requires speed to be successful. Try to find a successful fighter who fights with his hands low and doesn't have good speed.
The Philly shell should only be used by fighters who have the physical attributes to use it.
Carlos Frochos?
But he isn't nearly as slow as people make out. Abraham made him look like greased lightning.
i know in england its almost frowned apon to fight philly shell. i know gyms that have a keep your hands up or do press ups approach. i would think the same of euroupe judging by there fighters, its just tradition.
Usually older slower fighters use the Philly shell if done right the boxer using the Philly shell is very hard to hit and can slow the fight down to his pace.
I use it when I spar...if I know my opponent throws fast punches with reach then it will be kinda hard to weave and slip so in a case of emergency I clam
up that defense when I'm having trouble timing or if I'm against the ropes and counter on the inside...it's a good style to learn if
you're in trouble...

but once mastered its hard to hit a fighter clean
not everyone is gifted athletically though.
if James Toney had bad reflexes, mastered or not, the philly shell would be useless for him.
