In a lot of the Hopkins fights I have watched he tends to throw one or two punches than smothesr. Can anyone recommend me some fights were he stands in front of his opponents and exchanges punches without holding afterwards?
Has he ever been in an exchanges like the ones in Toney-McCallum I?
Promotions, mismatches, best not fighting each other. TV markets, PPVs.Bad, foul fested, boring, clinch fests. lol
The usual.
Thanks for the info
I tried to explain multiple weight classes and multiple champions to my friend and he just looked at me like I was crazy, lol
I don't think Boxing will ever change, unless there's some kind of major disaster, maybe the rise of mma will give it the kick it needs, or maybe not:thinking:
Ive been trying to forget that fight. One of the worst fights I have ever watched. Out of interest what problems did SI list?

This was the must see pic for Sports Illustrated boxing section. Were they pointed out all of boxings problems. Its an embarrassment really.

Have to watch that fight again. But the above kind of reinforces my earlier point, he only lets his hands go against limited come forward punchers

I see spots-Bernard Hopkins
Neither were trying to be the aggressor, which is why that fight was so dull
Neither Toney or Mccallum are brawlers, but that didnt stop them from getting into exchanges
After Toney, Hagler and McCallum:D

Glen Johnson, Echols, Mercado, Trinidad, Pavlik, Pascal, most of his early fights.

Jones didn't throw a lot of punches either but hopkins was trying to be the aggressor.

I don't know what you're looking for hopkins isn't a brawler he comes from the school of thought of hit and don't be hit, although earlier in his career he certainly let his hands go more so then he did later in his career.

People don't say he's one of the best defensive fighters for no reason
After Toney, Hagler and McCallum:D
That is also how mayweather will fight when he is older. He will be an inside fighter, and all of his fights will look like rounds 3-7 of the Hatton fight.
Do you think Mayweather will fight past 35? As for your second point I could see that happening if he carries on. Its shocking how much that guy has slowed down over the years watch Mayweather-Mosley then Mayweather-Corralles and you will ll be shocked
Props to them for having skills to adjust to aging bodies...but it isn't appealing to the casual fan.
I agree

Never has never will. It was much to dangerous for him. Keep looking but only thing Hopkins fights had were the pot shot, clinch, foul fest, cheating type bouts. Against the lower level and smaller competition he would fight just a hair more. When faced with anybody decent, he shelled up. His epic trilogy with Robert Allan is what ATGs are made of.
I got around to watching their first fight the other day and its exactly how you described it, with a lot of smothering /fouling tactics
Obviously he's had to adjust his style as he's got older. This is just basic common sense. You cant expect a 40 something year old guy to sit in front of the opponent and trade blows.
But he rarely did it during his elusive prime either
The only guy that I can think of that does that is Glen Johnson.
Toney as well
Watch Hopkins fights when he was younger, he fought a lot differently.
Against which opponents?
But even when he's older, he smothers based on the style he's fighting. Against Pascal and Pavlik, he doesn't need to smother. Against Calzaghe he smothered because Calzaghe has such an extremely high workrate. Against Winky he smothered to take away Winky's best weapon which is his jab.
he also smothered alot against Jackson and Lipsey. He rarely threw many punches against Jones

That's Hopkins of now. Hopkins of old, which is ironically young Hopkins, threw more combinations and clinched alot less.
Even during his prime he would fight the same way against awkward opponents like John David Jackson and Joe Lipsey. He would throw the right hand lead then smother and hit them with body shots
besides the pascal fight, hopkins pavlik was good, hopkins trinidad i thought was good and the taylor fights were alright imo too
but then again, i also really liked the hop-jones fight which everyone considers boring
I have to watch the Pavlik, Tito fights again. But what should be pointed out is that those guys were 1d punchers with average handspeed so he could afford to let his hands go against those kind of opponents.
His offense was terrible in the Taylor fights especially during the first 8 rounds of both fights. Lead right hand then smother

Haven't seen it in a while but the Antwun Echols II fight had a couple of good exchanges.
Thanks. It's been a while since Ive seen that fight. Off to check it out now
watching that video reminds me of an interview i was just listening to with roy jones where he says hopkins doesn't have any skills, he just throws one punch then leads with his head and smothers you following with illegal blows and acting for breaks
That's what I have noticed in a lot of his fights. He never throws a punch, slips a punch then throws another punch. Its always one punch then smother.
