Doesn't make sense.
It would make sense if he fought DLH at 145 then with the way he beat him fight at 147 after that fight.
Be unsure of competing in that weight but in your first fight there you fight at the full weight? Then conveniently fight at a catchweight in the next fight?
Example of how stupid this looks: Froch going up to 175, beat Cloud then be unsure if he can fight at 175 and fight at a catchweight of 173 against Hopkins :lol1:
How would fighting oscar at 145 make sense? Oscar hadn't been to 147 in 10 years buddy. 147 made perfect sense, he hadn't cut there.. EVER.
Against a live, active, champion at 147 in Cotto though, there's much higher risk and uncertainty. They made a 154 oscar cut to 147. Why would it make sense to have him cut to 145 lol.
Why didn't he just fight Cotto @ full 147, instead of making Miguel get down to 145? But fight after fights Clottey at the full 147lb limt?
It was a test for pac at WW. Cotto's camp agreed to fight at a catchweight of 145 pounds to accommodate Pacquiao's smaller physique. Take note . . . "smaller"
Cotto was 146 in his fight against Clottey. That is just ONE lb higher than when he fought Pac at 145. . . pls take note, ONE lb.
Some people make a big deal out of this ONE freakin* pound.
Roach is a good matchmaker.
He knew very well Cotto's WW days were coming to an end, he also kept in mind how Cotto looked so drain at 140 vs Malignaggi. So Roach was like okay let's bring this guy down as close to 140 as we can while not making it obvious. 145 for Cotto's title, not to mention Cotto's style was suited for Pacquiao, Cotto's size advantage was sapped by 2lbs at the weigh in.
As a result, Pacquiao had all the advantages. Even Arum was on Pacquiao's side.
Indeed. Cotto fight shudve been at 147lbs
Dumbs*ts it was Pacman 2nd fight at welterweight and he was still unsure if he could complete at the weight.
After the Cotto fight he was so confident, that why he didnt do catchweight.
Doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure it out. Sheesh.

this reply already starts out with a fail.
Roach is not a matchmaker for Manny, if he was.....please name a fighter that was a Roach selected opponent.
Roach never wanted the Clottey, Margarito, and now Mosley fight, but guess what we end up getting.
If Clottey was first then it would have been at 145 and Cotto at 147.
No one expected Pacquiao to do that good (completely dominate Cotto) so after the fact they realized there was no point of catchweight fights with WW's as Manny proved he can clearly fight there.
Ask yourself this: If Manny were to dominate Martinez at SMW, do you think he would ask for a catchweight in his next fight?
Cotto moved down 1 lb and Pac moved up 7 lbs was many times better than Floyd catchweight fight where he came 2 lbs overweight against lightweight Marquez.
quoted for truth
thread title is misleading as cotto fight was the first... anyway...
cotto can opt not to sign the contract if he don't agree with the catchweight... he is the defending champ for that fight for crying out loud... question is, why cotto accepted the fight at 145??.... plus, cotto is not a gimme... that's a tough SOB right there... team pac-man wants to have all the leverage they can possibly get... bottom line is, cotto agrees with the terms...
and after the cotto fight, pac-man might had realized that he can hang with these natural welterweights so he just had his next fight at the full WW limit... plus, clottey barely made the limit as well...

cause the fight with DLH at 147 lbs was a farce cause DLH didn't rehydrate and because pac/hatton was at 140 and pac went all the way down to 138 lbs.
the fight with cotto was against a full blown and very good WW
The thread didnt ask if Cotto came in at 147 would the outcome be different. The question is why ask Cotto to come in at 145 and not Clottey and the answer is Clottey could barely make 147 and Roach knew that.
that maybe, but i really think this weight drained thing has been blown way out of proportion.

it doesn't matter, if the Clottey fight came 1st it'll still be at 145 then the Cotto fight at full 147
DLH fights at middleweight, besides he's the one who dictate that the fight will be at 147 not Pac
whether he tried to get an advantage or not, the weight didn't effect cotto.
he looked as sharp as he ever did.
he would still have gotten his ass kicked regardless of the contracted weight.
