Welterweight titleholder Andre Berto and Victor Ortiz are negotiating to fight on April 16 in the U.S., the same night Amir Khan is scheduled to fight in the UK, Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer said.
Lou DiBella, Berto’s promoter, had mentioned the winner of the Mike Jones-Jesus Soto Karass fight or Luis Colazzo as possible opponents but neither represented the high-profile matchup Berto is seeking.
Ortiz isn’t Shane Mosley or Manny Pacquiao, two fighters Berto wanted to meet, but the Los Angeles-are fighter is an intriguing opponent for the 147-pounder from Miami.
An obvious issue is weight: Ortiz has been fighting as a junior welterweight (140 pounds). Both Schaefer and Rolando Arellano, Ortiz’s advisor, said they would want a catch weight. Schaefer mentioned 143 or 144.
Schaefer also has no concerns about Ortiz moving up in weight, pointing to his fight against Lamont Peterson on Dec. 11 to make his point.
“When they put Victor on the HBO scale the night of the fight, he weighed 156 pounds,” he said. “I think he’s also taller than Berto. And look at Berto’s last three, four fights. He usually came in at around 145.
“I don’t think size is going to be a problem here.”
Oritz (28-2-2, 22 knockouts) and Peterson fought to a draw. Berto (27-0, 21 KOs) is coming off a first-round knockout of Freddy Hernandez on Nov. 27, the fifth successful defense of his title.
Awsome match up, this fight makes me jizz in my pants and luis collazo is underrated, he been in two fight of the years and stuns in the ring however he choses, he can box and brawl, he's more than a one dimensional fighter. Its a shame he broke his hand with Mosley or else he woulda got a fight with Manny Pacman instead of Margarita. Belive me, Luis Collazo plays with his food and should only have one loss on his record
I agree with most everything you said but you comparing Soto-Karass to Collazo is just not one of them. Luis Collazo is a slicker southpaw fighter that mixes it up and has toughness. Luis can box and fight. Watch what he did to Hatton, boxed and banged than spun off and started again.
Soto-Karass just trudges forward like a Margarito without the punching power even without the loaded gloves. If he was the big of a puncher he would have had no problem stopping an untested, dog tired Mike Jones who fought the worst fight of his life.
I agree Collazo is a slick fighter, but he was not slick in his fight against Berta he was a come forward pressure fight..Granted he was still more slick then Soto could ever be but his style in that fight against Berta was not slick it was pressure..I think people don't give Jones enough credit,he fought a tough fight..He could have been smart but as we have found out that won't help you get fans..I was impressed by Jones and would pick him to beat Berta and also see big things for the kid..But we agree on just about everything dude I just don't see Berta beating a fighter like Soto and damn sure not a Margas..
Soto brings to the table the exact thing that gave Berto so much trouble against Collazo,Pressure and toughness..IMO Soto stops Berto,Berto has a questionable heart and stamina..Soto is a hard puncher and applys a lot of pressure we will never see Berto fight this kind of fighter because this is one of the styles that will give Berto a lot of problems a tall pressure fighter who could punch..We also won't see a Cintron fight because he is a big puncher who can box as well..Just face it Berto is a joke and not looking to. Take any risk..

I don't think too highly of Berto, especially his choice of opponents, but I see Ortiz getting stopped.
Berto has a suspect chin and stamina, I can see Ortiz exploiting his chin, but he won't be able to exploit Berto's stamina because he has suspect stamina himself. Ortiz' heart is as weak as it gets though and it will ultimately come into question again. His body language in the Peterson fight was terrible, and Lamont isn't even much of a power puncher, what makes it even worse, is he kept hitting Ortiz with the same step back counter and he couldn't adjust.
I can see Berto having tons of trouble early, but the kid showed heart in his loss to Collazo, so I see him being able to withstand Ortiz' first half assualt and landing the right hand on Ortiz until Victor's had enough.
Said the same exact thing, agree 100% here.
Not for nothin, but this could be a very interesting fight. I have a feeling Ortiz is going to feel stronger at 147. People shouldn't sleep on this fight.
Cmon man. Let's be real here.
Ortiz is three times more of a dynamic fighter than Soto-Karass. (Not knocking S-K, he's a good fighter) But he's very basic and only has about one way to win. PRESSURE. He had an absolutely exhausted Mike Jones who froze under the spotlight AND Soto-Karass still couldn't pull it off.
Berto isn't much of a pressure fighter and Ortiz can box as well as punch. It's a tad more intriguing than your allowing yourself to believe. It could be a snoozer or it could be high-speed chess. But one thing it won't be is Berto on his bike pot-shotting at a slower Soto-Karass that only hung with Mike Jones because he shot his wad in the 2ND ROUND!

I remember being so excited for this potential fight back when Ortiz still had that fire in his eyes that Maidana blew out.
And after watching Berto struggle with Collazo, I was thinking, Ortiz is better than Collazo, he should do well with Berto.
Now I'm thinking "Ortiz ready for another KO loss... Damn"

this is a good matchup.
ortiz is taller and packs on some weight on fight nights.
but if ortiz is still gunshy, berto will run right through him.
this would be a good test to see if ortiz can really take shots, we all know what happened with maidana, and robert garcia says he hates getting hit. having an all out war w/ berto will prove those thoughts wrong imo.
still, i think berto takes it. if this happens, berto should shut kermit up and then jones.
sounds like a good fight, hopefully it happens.
it would love to see this fight happen ! id favor berto he has more intagibles and can give ortiz problems with jabs. i see ortiz getting outboxed but both fighters will trade punches threwout the fight oh yesss !
It's bad enough that this tosser isn't fighting top fighters within his own division - he isn't even fighting the top fighters in the divison below his now.
Such a glass-jawed coward.
Yes please lets be real.
When was the last time Ortiz showed he was a dynamic puncher? When he was on his senior citizen tour?
Say what you want about how basic and this and that SK is. But, he is a WW, Ortiz arguably not even proven at JWW let alone a proven WW.
Also, SK has more intangibles than Ortiz, especially in the toughness heart department.
Anyways this is just dumb. Because, SK has a rematch with Jones. Because, if he losses that rematch you can't sell Ortiz>Jones and if he wins that rematch you can't sell Ortiz>SK. And, as of right now you can't sell Ortiz>Cintrn. You can try and sell Ortiz>Bailey but that is not saying much.
Berto is going to do a great job in cleaning out the JWW division. He is an elite JWW fighting at WW.
Hold up, Hold up. Ortiz is a big ass JWW. I'm curious to see what Ortiz's fight time weight is compared to Soto-Karass. Just because the guy weighs in at 147 the day before doesn't make him a more dangerous opponent. Soto-Karass is not even some huge puncher that is gonna stalk Berto until he lands his big shot. Come on.
Say what you will about Ortiz but the fact of the matter is he got into a shoot-out with a huge puncher, dropped the guy several times but ultimately faded. Maybe I'm biased because the same thing has happened to me. But Ortiz has the skill set, size, and punch to give Berto fits. He's not going to have to chase him around the ring like he had to with Peterson. It's going to be power boxing and Ortiz has a better one punch shot (along with better combos) than Soto-Karass.
Damn, the only reason we are talking about Soto-Karass is because Mike Jones practically tried giving him the fight and it still didn't happen. All Jones did was backpedal, dog tired, and throw pitty-pat punches and won the fight. What's Berto going to do??? The same thing plus more.

And, when has Vic Ortiz looked good? When he was going on his senior citizen tour?

Wait so berto is fighting a junior welter? And hes coming off a draw. He should fight cintron. I hope ortiz kos his ass
yeah, no chance of ortiz beating berto though. berto wins by KO
Hilarious that people are saying Soto-Karass is a better opponent than Ortiz.
Not hating on Soto-K, but man, he only looked good in the Mike Jones fight because Mike bombed out in the 2nd round AND fought like ****.
The rematch shouldn't even been on HBO. It's going to be an easy fight for MJ.
