HBO, Showtime or a big payperview to start 2011 would have been nice. Seems like somebody would have took advantage of new years falling on a Saturday and scheduled a big fight.
What better way to make a statement from boxing?
Was there a reason not to?
Everyone is tuning into College Football and other sports. Really not a good idea IMO.
This.
You'll also notice that they don't really show much boxing in October because of the MLB playoffs.
Dana White didn't have any problems coming up with a Fight card aired for free as a gift to the fans.. http://www.ufc.com/event/UFC125
oh well, with Top Rank and Golden Boy as the top promoters, wouldn't hold my breath that they come up with the same idea..
It's not free, its on PPV

Interesting, I wonder how the ratings will be on that.
If boxing was the big sporting event for the late night it would get a bunch of sports fans attention. They are out at a bar, a fight is on. They are at home just flipping through channels trying to find something to watch, a fight is on. I think a properly promoted new year's eve fight could do well and bring new fans to the sport.
Good point. But I remember Dan Rafael saying in one of his chats that a lot of people in the boxing biz are taking time off around now. It's easier for a sport with one governing body to setup an event but I think with boxing it's a bit trickier to pull off something like that.
You mean when everyone, including people in the boxing industry were out celebrating? And btw, those "lame new years programming" still get a lot of ratings. Having a fight on New Year's eve would be a shit idea and would get shit ratings.

Should have done it last night honestly. The only thing they would have competed with was the lame new years programming.

Yeah they could have waited till 12am for the main event and still started the new year with a fight

Yup. Other sports are huge on holidays and would sap any ratings away from boxing.
Because it's a holiday. It's not a good time to get ratings on holidays. Not to mention lots of people in the boxing industry itself are taking work off.
I think the networks know what they're doing when scheduling fights, and having a fight on a day like today is not financially wise.
