Choices are Winky Wright, Arthur Abraham, and Joshua Clottey. I'm going with Winky myself. Aside from the Williams fight I haven't seen it backfire as much as Clottey and Abraham. Seemed a little hard to scout. His losses that I can recall Vargas, B-hop, a draw with Jermaine Taylor, and Paul Williams
If you're talking purely defensive, as in minimising any damage you receive, then the answer is Clottey. If you're talking about functional defence that still allows you to attack and win a fight then I'd go for Winky. Clottey's defence is more or less watertight, but whilst he's in it he really can't fight back so he's ripe for a UD against any reasonably sturdy and offensive opponent. Winky on the other hand was always in a position to fire back, though he occasionally got countered. Abraham's guard isn't bad though. He's only been knocked down once in his career to my knowlege and that was a balance shot. Trouble is he really can't fight out of the guard. He's either all defence or all offence, no in between.
BEtween Winky n CLotey imo, both these guys use their high guards better than abraham, all abraham does when his arms are up is stand still. WInky n CLottey when they get inside, throw uppercuts and good overhnd punches
And so did winky....so my choice is Ike.
Ike's defense was good but Winky and Clottey took that and perfected it. There are hardly any moments when you will see Winky or Clottey out of his defensive stance, Quartey let his hands down when he attacked and got caught a lot.
I pick Clottey. I was watching Winky's fight against Vargas yesterday and Vargas was penetrating him most of the time when he threw. I have never seen Clottey hit with anything big or back to back punches that caught him clean.
Clottey imitated his defensive style by Ike Quartey btw. That was his idol
