The Bert Sugar of MMA, historian Joe Rogan blasted boxing saying it wasnt a sport of fighting, that is was just a sport of punching
Do U Agree???
He explains boxing wouldnt be effective in a real street fight, that MMA is more effective since it is as real as it gets
What R U Thinking?
this guy is a clown, anybody with any knowledge would call him a clown seconds after hearing him calling the ufc cards. this guy doesnt like boxing because he is probably scared to get hit simple as that. its funny how he goes on about fighting like hes a respected ex fighter. the guy is an ex comedian and an ex televisin show host. That says it all.
do you suppose he ever grounded and pounded with andy dick on the set of newsradio?
if it was a sport of punching i suppose the boxers would be required to stand in a single spot and trade punches like rock em sock em robots. if you ask me, tying up and clinching is an art. not everyone can do it (hmmm, pac vs mosley? lol jk). a lot of my friends outweigh me by 30+ pounds and when i tie up and smother, they seriously dont know what to do. i dont think it's too much different from the ground game in mma. i definitely use my leverage and knowledge of inside fighting to bully bigger guys around. a fight's a fight.
It's not you man, I've had this conversation with a lot of people, heard many say that 80% of the time fights are fought on the ground. See that...I don't see that.
In my experience as well, seldom does a fight end up on the ground. Ive participated in fights for i think 20 times already in my life. Ive only been to the ground 3 times.
One time is when there was a chair as we fought inside the house that hampered my movement so I was naturally tacked by my bigger opponent.
Second one was when my opponent fell down because also of the chair. We fought inside the house.
And lastly, when it was a 2 on 1 and we fought a guy so much bigger than us. I held the hands of the guy to prevent him from throwing punches and he was too damn strong that we both fell on the ground.
Other than those incidents, all my fights are stand up. So saying street fights usually end up in the ground is BS.

Boxing is a sport and art of pugilism but it is not limited to a punching sport. This discipline is usage of body mechanics, footwork, evasion maneuvering, angles, and distance.
It is akin to fencing as a sport wherein it is a disciplined sport. Baseball is another. Soccer too...
The fact that the art and science of boxing is creative use of punching is a start but cunning/strategizing together with physical conditioning, strength, speed, quickness are the other half.
What Joe Rogan stated was that MMA is a sport of different fighting disciplines whereas boxing is just one aspect of fighting.
He's saying that in mma, you can take on your opponent with knee's, elbows, punches, submissions, etc, and in boxing you can ONLY use your fists.
Technically he's right.
Amen...
But why do we all have to be antagonistic against each other right? Both are awesome sport while BOXING is more of a refined art because of its rich history whereas the MMA is still developing.
We can see the fine art of pugilism whereas in MMA, mostly, from what I've seen the competitors are just BIG, STRONG, QUICK but no skills. Except for some few out there like Lyoto Machida, Penn, George St. Pierre...
In MMA, it is too raw for me and thus the allure of boxing concentrates on the skills and art of pugilism. Not downing MMA but they would evolve higher and higher to see some of the traditional martial arts come into play.
We've seen a mix of Karate (Machida) and boxing (Penn and St. Pierre) and hopefully more. And so it is coming to full circle now as it is getting better from the usual domination of wrestlers.
Nowadays, the evolution is going with the "balanced" fighters (mentioned above) who can STRIKE as well as WRESTLE.
With Boxing, we can also see the "raw" fighters who just happened to be STRONG, BIG, QUICK and FAST with no skills/art/science. But it the discipline that forces fighters in boxing to be more well-rounded in their strategy.
And so it is happening now in MMA too. Gradually. And so I would predict that once we witness that in a widespread, the more St. Pierre, Machida and Penn (obviously there's more skillful and scientific fighers in MMA not mentioned), the more we can see some crossover fans of FIGHTING.

BTW if you want to be a street fighter ( don't, it is stupid ) you should probably learn some wrestling on top of boxing. Grappling is very important. What happens when a boxer gets taken down? Game over usually. But if I was a top boxed I would be prepared. Train a little wrestling on the side, at least take down defense. Just in case somebody trys you on the street.
If you're known in the streets for having good hands, somebody is gonna try to wrestle you some day.
I think MMA fighters can learn a thing or two from boxers, and boxers can learn some quick grappling tehcniques from MMA fighters.
A fistfight is still a fight. A lot of fights on the street go to the ground, but good hands can end a bad situation quickly.
MMA is closer to street fighting, but boxing is more than just hands. You gotta have footwork and headmovement.
Joe rogan is a 5'5 pothead douche that failed at comedy. He also tried to box in boston and got humilated everyday at the gym. Same gym that trained micky ward I believe.
I havent read the whole thread, so sorry if I repeat anything anyone has already said. I think that legs are almost useless in a street fight, just because of all the adrenaline rushing it just makes it much harder to kick as your legs start to feel heavier. I would only learn to wrestle to get out of a ground situation as fast as possible, as not to get stomped on by any overexcited bystanders. In conclusion to my opinion, I would say that boxing with its superior footwork and easy to learn technique would result in the easiest way to defend yourself. just my two cents
Sorry I do not know how it got double posted.

i can see where they would separate the two to explain a difference between the two, fighting mma, boxing punching, they both have fight in them, and they're both on different logistics and standards.
the bottom line, if we're splitting hairs and marginalizing each sport, then yes, boxing is punching and mma is fighting. both take a high level of skill and conditioning and training, time and effort, so it's not fair to marginalize hard work and dedication.
for me, i think boxing is more refined and takes a higher level of concentration and focus. i also think that it takes higher level of skill to keep a fight a certain distance and control your fighter from a distance, because all fights the two combatants collide and clinch and in mma, usually go to the ground, where as in boxing, even without the help of a ref, you have to stay on your feet, and to be really effective as a boxer you have to keep you opponent at a distance, unless you're skilled in inside fighting which as well is a distance game to because you're not getting tangled up in clinches or wrestling down to the ground.
in mma guys fight hard to not get taken down, but guys take their opponent down a lot of times to get a rest, because it's harder to keep someone off of you in a standing boxing position.
for me it's the distance part of the game that makes boxing superior and makes it a sport of fighting with skilled punching, hard training and smarts, showing why it's the sweet science.
for the record joe rogan is a good guy, he's just pro mma............
I don't see how boxing has a higher degree of concentration vs any other form of striking or wrestling.
all I know is if i'm going to get jumped 2on1 i'd rather be a great puncher than a wrestler.
It's more likely that two people will tackle you to the ground. Then what Mr. Boxer????
Personally I would rather be prepared for any situation instead of just one..

Boxing or MMA are not the same as street fighting for the average person. Most people don't know all those martial arts moves you see in MMA or even real boxing moves. Sure people know how to punch, wrestle, or get you in a head lock, but that stuff comes natural. Joe Rogan is an idiot for trying to compare MMA to street fighting when street fighting has nothing to do with real MMA. Its also not boxing. Fighting is all personal choice and not every guy wrestles, there's plenty of people that throw punches. If MMA wants to separate them selves from boxing and draw comparisons, then they need to take out striking because what those guys are doing is boxing. When they roll around on the ground and are separated by the ref and brought back to their feet, the crowd cheers every time. Just goes to show what MMA fans prefer to see.
