I am a big fan of Victor Ortiz, he has all the skills he needs to make it really big, and he has incredible power. And unlike a lot of others, I dig his friendly and at times goofy personality, he's a cool guy as far as I'm concerned.
That said, I was incredibly disappointed with his performance against Lamont Peterson. In no way he got robbed, I had it a 94-94 draw, only because Ortiz stole an exciting 10th round. Rounds 5-9 were all Peterson (together with the 2nd, so I had it 4-6 in rounds), in my opinion.
Granted, Lamont Peterson is a very good boxer, but Ortiz is considered to be a top 5 junior welter (together with Khan, Maidana, Bradley and Alexander), so such a lacklustre performance is not very impressive, not even against a top 5-10 junior welter. I don't know what it is, but he can not seem to force his gameplan or style on an elite opponent. He got into a brawl against Maidana, although he could have boxed him and maybe won, and he failed miserably to use his physical advantages against a boxer like Peterson.
Let's be honest, ever since the loss to Maidana, he is underachieving. Alatorre is a nobody, and Antonio Diaz, Nate Campbell and Vivian Harris are all close to the very end of their careers or downright finished. Even if he is only 23, this is getting a bit worrying for what looked like it could have been a very illustrous career.
So what does the near future have in store for him? I don't think he beats Bradley or Khan at this stage. Rematch with Peterson and fight smarter? Grudge match with Rios, which he will probably win (although I am not 100% sure about that anymore either)? New trainer to revive his career?
Im one of those posters that use to be high on Vic even after the Maidana loss but damn he looked bad in the Peterson fight. When he comes inside he sticks his head and chin up begging to get countered. I thought it would have a chance to beat Maidana now I dunno :(. He needs a new trainer ASAP.
I suggest you rewatch that fight as soon as possible then. Bradley starting visibly fatiguing from the body work, which they were both working evenly at. In the 9th round bradley broke away from the phone booth and was forced to box the rest of the fight, thats when it became clear cut. Hmm from what I remember Bradley lost no more than 2 rounds...Now when Bradley fought Holt that was a different story.
Disappointed in his draw with Peterson too. Thought he could've willed himself to edge it out at multiple points in the fight. But anyways, not everyone can be pleased. If Ortiz had continued in that Maidana fight (weakened and chopped down already), he would've bounced punches off Maidana's leather face while absorbing possibly career threatening damage before being viciously KO'd. It's not like he didn't try to take Maidana out (legit KD's) and didn't take a beating even up til the 6th round. In fact, stupid boxing fans...being the results oriented, hindsight using idiots they are...probably woulda been the first ones to come on here and say that his trainer or whoever shoulda taken him out before he got more of a beating if Ortiz had continued in that fight.
Fair enough I always respected you as a poster and Im glad you arn't being biased.
I think the Peterson fight had more to do with a clash of styles rather than Peterson actually fighting on even terms with Vic. I agree Vic should have asserted himself more when he had peterson down twice but I can see why he's being cautious because the last time he did that was against Maidana and we all know what happened there. Honestly I think he's still getting his convfidence back and eventually he will be fine.
IMO there is balance and right now I think Vic is swaying way too much on the caution side of things
you keep referring to the Maidana fight as an indication as to what happens when you are aggressive and I disagree in the sense that I think Vic fought the dumbest fight you could against Maidana. He tried to out slug a slugger. He went toe to toe way too often and it kept Maidana in the ball game.
that aside what he should have learned instead of being overly cautious as there are times to be aggressive (not against pure punchers like Maidana) and a time to be agressive (like say round 4 of the Peterson fight)
he hasn't learned that yet
and he was indeed passive against Nate
Here is Victor now doing his new thing;'

Once again leave it to the Rican to bring up gay shhiitt.
sure but I like Vic a lot he has always been great with me and we have a good repoir
see unlike some I can try and not let my biases control my opinions
what I see in there is a far cry from the kid I touted as a can't miss prospect

Arn't you friends with the Roberto garcia/Rios camp?

I agree with this 100% and this is where people will say that Maidana ruinned him but if anything Maidana smartened him up, although it could have cost him the fight here... it will definitely reward him a few victories in the long run.
I don't agree with this
I think essentially there are a handful of opponents you need to be wary of at all times with Maidana being the extreme case
just about everyone else you should be able to balance aggression and caution and that is something Vic is having issue with right now
Vic is a lot like Wlad right now. It was in trying to finish Maidana that he was beaten. With Wlad, it was in trying to finish BRewster that he was beaten. Those are scars that wont go away and i'll expect them both to always take their foot off the gas several times now in an attempt to prevent situations liek that from happening again.
but the major difference between the two is that when Wlad smells blood he goes for it
Vic takes his foot off the pedal seemingly
Lamont had a great countering game during the fight though and maybe Ortiz felt as though coming in too heavy would be a little too costly. Hard to say whats going through the guys head but personally i think Lamont did enough to gain ORtiz's respect and thats what happened.. Ortiz became too respectful.
I gave Peterson a hell of a chance to win
that being said when Vic had him in dire straits he needed to instill his will and gameplan and he simply didn't
well don't you think that's because every time Harris was hit he went down.
I mean it's easy to look good when you have a willing participant. Harris was that guy
but that's HIS mentality not his coaches. Ortiz has become aloof and indifferent to the whole boxing game. Someone I trust asked a GBP exec what he thought about Vic's performance and the guy rolled his eyes and said he didn't know what to think of Vic anymore
no he didn't. I can see where he may have sat on his lead BUT it's also up to Ortiz to adjust according to what HE sees as well. He had Peterson in dire straits and backed off. That is a bad trait to have
.
sounds like excuse making 101
this I do agree with I don't think Danny is a world class trainer but it's not like Vic listens all that well either
Arn't you friends with the Roberto garcia/Rios camp?
In the fight with Harris ortiz rehydrated to 152 and for Peterson he rehydrated to 156...Ortiz squared up against Peterson instead of making himself a flatter target like he did against Harris....
well don't you think that's because every time Harris was hit he went down.

I don't think 140 is his weight class anymore and that he needs a trainer that can motivate him...even on a new interview Ortiz said he took some rounds off because he thought he was ahead after the knock downs, and he said he didn't want to get careless and finish off Peterson because Peterson is young and still in his prime which meant he can't stop him?

...I think Danny Garcia made Ortiz believe that he can't stop Peterson which is dumb because he dropped him twice and there were times where it would have been more knock downs had he not held on to Ortiz.
no he didn't. I can see where he may have sat on his lead BUT it's also up to Ortiz to adjust according to what HE sees as well. He had Peterson in dire straits and backed off. That is a bad trait to have
..I think that the weight was the issue and his trainer didn't prepare him for this fight...Danny Garcia didn't seem to have a game plan to help Ortiz adjust...wether ortiz has the killer instinct or not it is also the trainer's job to be a mentor for his fighter...
sounds like excuse making 101
I also remembered in the maidana fight that his trainer told ortiz he was gonna stop the fight? You don't tell your fighter that after being knocked down once and still leading the score cards...then against Peterson he told ortiz to take it easy after knocking Peterson down...WTF is that?
this I do agree with I don't think Danny is a world class trainer but it's not like Vic listens all that well either
It's the way he has reacted in fights since that make people question his heart. He ran from Nate Campbell. He won't take chances because he is scared to get hit. He doesn't look like he is having fun.
But thats exactly why he lost against maidana, because he decided to slug and took to many chances.
I think he just learned his lesson is all and decided to box more. And he didn't run from Nate at all. What fight were you watching? Nate stayed in his shell the whole fight and couldn't pull the trigger on anything. Thats why hes retiring dude.
I think Victor didn't look all that good against peterson but I thought he clearly won the fight on Saturday against a very good and very slick boxer.
And this whole he doesn't have any heart is just more stupid boxing fan nonsense. The guy has pleanty of heart he just got beat in one very competative and brutal fight.
If his body said he couldn't go on then so be it! I still don't understand why you retards feel like Victor "had to" get knocked the fuk out. he was beaten why take more punishment? Seems pretty stupid to me!

A rematch with Maidana looks kinda unlikely.
I have to disagree! At this point Golden Boy needs both of them to fight each other because lets be honest Maidana has lost a lot of his luster after landing big shots on Khan and not being able to finish him.
Victor who i thought won on Saturday needs to avenge his previous loss if he's ever gonna be considered a top contender again.

Really? Looked like he just got straight up whooped in that fight.

where does Ortiz go from here?????
to find the balls he lost when he quit vs Maidana!!! the kid has no killer instinct.....they need to put the kid back on espn, telefutura or hbo latino and make him earn his way back to the spotlight
