LOL at Roy Jones saying that, I think freddie should teach him how to go to the body more, he definately should use that shot more often. He has stopped a few fights with a body shot back in England, i think with the right tactics, with his speed and power, his body attack can become just as feared as a prime Cotto's, i like how he landed two in quick succession....
Thoughts?
easy to say let your hands go into his body, but you leave your head open as you know.....not a tempting thing with maidana throwing bombs at you.
i thought khan was too focused on throwing those pitty patty training punches...maidanas face said afterwards that his punches had no pop in them.
he will learn from this fight. roach will get him on track. it took him years to do it with pacman, if khan doesnt get KO'd again then he could be really good in a few years time....we wait and see
Could it be that the left hook to the body the most effective and under-utilized punch in the sport? It seems as though every thread involving body punches always end with, "it's a shame he didn't continue to aim for the body."
Seems like someone who has success with body punches early in a fight either completely gives up on them from that point on, or their opponent begins covering up. If anything though, Maidana seemed even more open for body shots as the fight wore on...
Guys some of you are a little naive when it comes to the sweet science, I am not trying to sound patronising...but whilst khan produced a great body shot, and landed a few more during the fight, it was always a dangerous tactc to go for the body against a puncher. Khan had to be wary of maidana's power throughout the fight and whenever he delivered a body shot he made sure he wasn't reaching for it or also too close because he can get caught like he did against prescott. The body punching as a whole I don't think was part of the strategy, when I was watching the build up roach encouraged khan to stab maidana with the jab in the stomache and chest, but throwing power punches to the body can leave you exposed, its harder to get them off the higher the level you reach, ie ricky hatton found it more and more difficult as he went up in level to find his body shots.
No im sure khan will invest more to the body, as he improves at measuring distance and improves footwork, at times he was still reaching with head shots. Also when the other fighter doesn't have so much firepower coming back it will be easier because he can afford to leave himself a little more open.
Khan made quite a lot of mistakes in the fight, but reaching for a body shot and gettting caught himself was not one of them. Which im sure roach drilled into him during camp.
yeah i gotta agree, khans tactis were all wrong for the fight, but he still won clearly, he still needs to work on his inside game a little, but i guess its another learning cure for him.
Im dissapointed with khan. Look how big the body is and you couldnt find it.
You should have just went for the body, and when he lowers his elbows to protect his body, then go for the head.
Just attack the body. WHy didnt you?
I know its normally attack the head and then go downstairs, but in this fight it should have been the other way around.
He had 11 rounds to find a body shot it took 2 minutes in the first round to land and find.
Somethings wrong there. Too concerned about fast combinations to the head and not just making sure he went body hunting as he would look too samey. Too concerned about how he looked and wanted variety when all he needed was to make leather touch maidanas body.
