On espn they were saying sergio martinez caught paul williams with a lucky punch. imo there is no lucky punch in boxing. that is the point of the sport is to punch and sergio landed a big bomb. they must not know boxing enough to know the punch was an overhand left and sergio turned away to crank on the punch and wasnt looking at paul williams. that was the same punch that pacquiao knocked hatton out with. still makes me laugh when emanuel steward ruins the ko call by saying no no it was a right. lol.
Quite a few of Martinez's left hook counters were of him not even looking at Williams when he threw it. I think Martinez was more surprised that Williams dropped the way he did than say landing it.
No. Punches are thrown with the intent of hitting and inflicting damage on your opponent. Saying Martinez hit Williams with a lucky pumch, which knocked him out cold, is ridiculous and sounds like something Burner would have made up.
As much as I love Sergio, he knows his eyes were closed when he threw that shot.
Its more like taking the final shot from half court before the buzzer goes off.
You might remember Michael Jordan (and most good bball players actually) could make free throws with his eyes closed on televised games. I guess he just has incredible luck, eh?
I don't think this is a good example. Basketball rings don't move. Its is not human, i can go on and on.
I can make a free throw with my eyes closed BTW:boxing:
Sure there is. Sometimes guys who aren't big punchers score 1 punch KO's on a surprise lucky shot. Some guys who are desperately behind on points come out of nowhere and end the fight with a big shot because they had no choice but to get lucky. I wouldn't classify Martinez' KO of Williams as a lucky shot though.
If you think there's such a thing as a lucky punch, (Roger Mayweather's voice) "You don't know sh!t about boxing". Muscle memory, instincts, speed, power, timing all play a part in what the ignorant call luck.
Even when someone lands a shot when they aren't looking it's because they know where there opponent's head is and have correctly predicted where it will be by the time the punch they throw gets in the vicinity of their target. If you have no head movement, it's going to be easier to predict where your head will be once you throw.
Calling Martinez' shot lucky is especially stupid, if you've seen the first fight where he lands a similar punch in the first round that knocks Paul to the other side of the ring and continued landing similar variations of it from there on. The difference between that one and the others is timing and exactly where the punch landed.
Yes if you throw a punch with your eyes closed and it hits its target then it was a lucky punch.
get it ? eyes closed = lucky punch

OF COURSE THERE IS SUCH THING AS A LUCKY PUNCH!!!11ONE
A "lucky punch" can be defined as when a fighter you are a huge fanboy of "gets caught" by the hated opponents fist, and loses by knockout. Roy Jones fans are the best example I can think of, as we've already predictably seen in this thread.
Sergio's certainly wasn't, he was landing that left in both fights so with the extra pounds he got the power to knock him out. But if you're in a fight and you're just swinging wildly and one lands then it's lucky. So yes there is such thing, definitely
If you punch is with the intention of hitting something. No such thing as a lucky punch, shame on the fighter for not defending properly. Lucky punch or bad defense
can a punch be lucky? Sure, say that you have two boxers going at it "little rascal-style", punches just flying without any real precision. Whatever lands, lands. Suddenly, one punch lands for one boxer amids all his hurricane...that's considered lucky in my book. You see it more with up and comers, but it does happen.
A perfect example of a lucky punch is Tarver's KO of Roy Jones Jr. Jones was winning the fight and just got caught at the wrong time. Tarver is full of himself and is jealous that he'll always be in the shadow of Jones. Imagine if Jones didn't have to kill himself to lose weight, he would've beat Tarver even more decisively in their first fight and there wouldn't had been a rematch.
"You got any excuses tonight,Roy?"

Sergio's definitely wasn't. He was hitting Paul Williams with that left throughout the fight. There can be lucky punches but Sergio's was nowhere near lucky. He was setting that punch up for the whole (short) duration of the fight, whoever said it was a lucky punch is a moron.
It can't be a lucky punch if you knock someone out cold with a shot bang on the chin.
My argument for this is really simple - the shot was thrown with real intent.
Maybe if you knocked someone out with a 'don't hit me jab' and somehow KO'd them that would be a fluke.
