Serious question, let's say he was at his prime, or a late developer athlete....
And hypothetically Floyd and pac retires, can he carry the sport?
He has the face, talent and balls. I think he might struggle at first but I think he can do it.
Have to look past Martinez as he states, he only has three more fights left and then he is retiring.
The current crop of junior welterweights should do the job, as they move up in weight, and there is a lot of talent at featherweight and super middleweight.
Next stars: Khan, Ward, Dirrell, Alexander, Bradley, Juanma and Gamboa.
He needs to be in with a popular fighter, win, and look great doing so. Floyd and Pac got their boost from Dela Hoya and Hatton(who carries a large fan following) that's why they are now mainstream stars of the sport. So in other words, he needs to fight either Pac or May, and win decisively.
Not to mention he needs to sustain that momentum by winning decisively against the next opponent. So aside from winning a career defining fight, he also needs to sustain that momentum he built after that..
If he cant do this, he will only be a boxing star but not a popular sports figure like Floyd and Pac now.
No. At 35 years, he doesn't have much time to do it. On his next fight, he might show some of his age even if he wins. Specially here in the US(mecca of boxing), he hasn't been on a PPV fight yet that he was the co main event. He might have captured a lot of fans by beating Pavlik and Williams but we have to see how much he can attract on PPV. Even for Pac to make 700,000 against Clottey, that is still a great accomplishmen for a non-American to make.
he is 36 and speaks no english at all in a division where he has little competition.
he is fun to watch (and fun to look at!!) but he cannot carry boxing.
he would be like felix trinidad. a good draw but not a oscar/tyson/floyd.
He won't be far behind them, so no. He has potential to be a decent star for the sport though, as gay as it sounds because of his looks and personality. Not on Pac and Floyd's level though.
no, he's 35.
Bradley, Khan, Ortiz, Donaire, Montiel, Moreno, Juanma etc can carry it
^^^ This is a good post.. along with a few others, these are the comers that can continue to bring excitement.. Along with maybe Williams as well, he is only 29, lets see how he rebounds from Martinez.
It will be hard for him to "carry" the sport when he only has a few fights left in him. I believe he will retire first, but we will see what happens.
He said he has two or three more fights. I think he may retire before or the same time as they will.
But most likely no. He doesn't have a big fanbase. =/
