they say about Paul Williams that for a tall guy he likes to mix it up alot on the inside but by doing this he also gives up his height advantage
should he be doing this?
i know that it's part of his style now but it seems to me that he would be best suited in using his reach abit more and not trying to mix it up on the inside as tall fighters are abit clumsy in close and don't always have the best chins either
Williams' style is a nightmare for most boxers. Tall, southpaw, throws loads of punches, good chin...etc
but Martinez kind of used all those things against him
Williams is aggressive so Martinez was patient and waited for him to inevitably make a mistake
The fact that Paul had never been knocked out before let him be very willing to take punches he perhaps shouldn't be getting caught with and now he is fighting bigger guys that's maybe not the best move
And the fact that Williams was facing another southpaw meant he wasn't used to where certain punches were coming from
in the first fight it was Martinez's right hook that was doing damge in this one it was his left
so in conclusion would Williams be better suited to boxing at range more and staying behind his jab?
or should he just continue with his style the way it is being it got him this far?
Question: Shouldn't he have been doing this from the start?
I think it's to late, the style he currently fights with is what works for him as of now, even if he did get brutally knocked out. Paul has adapted to a style already, it's hard to change at this point.
He's should keep his hands up and work on his defense a bit. Also, he needs to humble himself and leave his arrogance in the past. Minor adjustments to his style would do him a world of good, an overhaul is not what he needs.
P-Williams was always one of the tallest/rangiest fighters who never used his height/reach advantage effectively.
It’s almost like he chose to fight his opponents fight to put himself in range to get hit, his volume punching and stamina made up for his discrepancies.
absolutely
ive been saying it since i've first seen him fight
when he fights inside or brawls, those long arms take too long to "wind up" and he's vulnerable....
he's foolish for not using his natural advantages
