Martinez has decent power but i still think there are bigger hitters at 154lbs than him. Williams is almost 30 and even if he makes a real effort to improve i can't see him ever being that hard to hit.
Kirkland
Cintron
Angulo
Bundrage
Konecny
Julio
Now Bundrage is not elite with his skill but just like he showed against Spinks who is a top defensive fighter all he has to do is land and against Paul he will get that chance. I think all the guys listed could hurt Paul.
If Cotto, Dzinziruk, Lara could hurt him i am not sure but Dzinziruk and Lara would have a very good chance of outboxing him and are southpaws also.
I really can't see Paul dominating 154lbs and think that him getting KO again is a real possiblility.
Anybody else have opinions?
close fight but i have it 115-113 being as generous as possible for Paul in martinez I. Margarito and the controversial Sergio win are his only significant wins. I don't rate the verno or winky wins as anything to brag about. Sharmba was towards the end of his career and small and Matthysse after Wiliams has lost 4 of 5 with 3 losses by KO. solid but again nothing to brag as being elite
i think his resume is exaggerated too.
we really see the cintron fight differently and discussion what could have happened and imaginary things that didn't happen have no validity. I could just as easily say that Cintron would have continued to sucessfully counter him and end up knocking him out.
like i said to no ceilings julio is a pretty decent boxer but would not be able to handle williams pressure same as the Angulo fight but that's only if he could take Julio's power which is solid 154 Lb punching power and i honestly dont know if he can. like with most of the guys i mentioned.
you're baseing his chin on his 147 career. i'm questioning it at 154 where in his two fights with solid punchers he has shown to be stunned or hurt by them with Cintron and Martinez.
how did you think cintron fared against sergio vs paul.
the fact that you're downplaying paul's win (either way it was a 1 point win for whoever) show's me you're hating. it was a great performance by both guys that should not be discounted.
cintron is not known for coming on in fights. pwill is as evidenced by the MANY examples I gave you that you are treating as me trying to get credit for paul's wins. i was using tose as examples to show that paul is a rhythm fighter who frequently fights better as he gets his rhythm
Hey Khmelnytsky
It's VERY possible that Paul Williams fought the best fighter in the world to a stanstill and won a close decision in their first fight and then got blasted out in the second fight after looking good.
That's no reason to shi t on him and act like he can barely hand a Joel Julio.
We'll see how he comes back from the ko, but you can't deny paul's resume.
He has a legit win over a prime Sergio Martinez, how many on your list could retire with that?

i think it was the weight added to the perfect punch that did it. i was going to make a thread about this last night. when they fought at 154 paul took some of the same shots and didn't budge. add 6lbs plus what ever sergio added over night and pwill couldnt handle it. i think 154 is the best for him. there is a list of names in that divsion that he can fight.
agreed. i think the best at 147 will be a little too fast for paul
no he wasn't
maybe i should watch it again but from what i remember winky was just being swamped and with his guard up all the time he never had a chance to punch
winky most certainly was in it for a couple rounds, then paul just swarmed him.
winky wasn't doing much, but paul took about 3 rounds to get going.

winky was in the fight early till pwill got his rhythm

well i think youre overrating him and i dont get your second comment. "just because someone has power doesn't mean it will work against Paul" ? He will always get hit and if they have equal or better power than Sergio of course it could hurt him.
Cintron arguably won every round, was outjabbing him and counterpunching him successfully. when people talk about "paul was figuring him out" i dont see that in what actually took place. wishful thinking i think as Paul has never been great at making adjustments.
be honest how many Konecny fights have you really seen lol ?
paul agruably won every round vs cintron as well, it was a close fight for two rounds.
paul is a rhythm fighter, that's what we're talking about, the first sergio fight, he got in his rhythm after the first couple rounds and won 5-6 straight rounds and probably 7 out of the last 9. against margs, he got his game really rolling around the 8-9 and won the late rounds.
against quintana, he never got it and was listless all night. he said after the fight he couldn't get it going.
against verno, he already had it going early, but you could tell when he was feeling it.
winky, same thing, winky was in the fight early till pwill got his rhythm
(you got me on konecky)
against cintron, his left and jab were beginning to find a home. they were a little off the first two rounds but they were finding a home, so if you watch enough pwill you will see it. it's obvious-.
my second comment is saying that paul has a hell of a chin unless its one of those perfect punches. he already fought plenty of fighters with power. mathysse had plenty of power...how did that work for him? you're being amateur- just because someone has power, doesn't mean it translates into what sergio did. i mean fukin JULIO? that result is the mathysse fight all over again.
obviously i like paul a lot, but I know he has flaws. but he has big balls and is a classy guy and makes for great fights. I like sergio a lot too- both are in my five favorites.
Kirkland- we'll see after he fights, its waaaay too premature
Cintron- paul ud, he was taking over the last fight handily
Angulo- great fight, pwill by ud
Bundrage- pwilly by ko
Konecny- pwill by ko
Julio - pwill by ko
dzindurek- great fight- pickum
cotto- pwill by wide brutal decision
lara- this year (2011), I got pwill by stoppage
I think you're waaaaay to quick to write pwill off. WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYY too quick.
just because someone has power, doesn't mean it will work against paul. you're acting like all the sudden pwill is garbage. he got stunned a few times in previous fights BUT SO DOES EVERYONE.
this was the only time he gopt hurt and of the above list, NO ONE can land that punch like sergio, I think except maybe lara down the road.

No offense but Williams will get exposed again vs someone who hits hard. He has to tweak his defense bigtime although it's a little to late since he's got into the habit of leaving himself right open. Paul may end up a punchbag at this point (seriously) but I think he should fight Cintron again..
I think Angulo has the best chance because he can take what Paul will dish out.
Theres 2 sides to Paul. Yes he can be hit but you better ready to take his fire as well. I know Bunderage, Cotto and Julio for a fact cant take Pauls pressure.
Pauls not a glass chinned fighter. Martinez landed some bombs in the first round that Paul ate. This was just a perfect punch.
if he can take their punches he can win those fights with his pressure and volume. i really question if he could take clean bundrage and julio punches though. bundrage is strong as a horse
i think the same it was as perfect a shot as anyone could land. Wonderful timing. Paul has been hurt in the first Martinez fight and stunned against Cintron. You don't think guys like the ones named would be able to hurt him?
no matter who Williams fights the opponent will land punches and i don't think it has to be such a perfect shot to hurt him.

There isnt a fighter at 154 or 160 who takes that punch and keeps coming. It wasnt just the power. It was just the fact he didnt see it.
There arent any guys at 154 with the kind of skill, size and speed of Martinez to land a sick punch like that.

i think williams needs to serious consider staying at weltewrweight where he can absorb shots better
he's not a big puncher himself either so staying at this weight might not be good for him that being said not everyone he will be facing in the 154 lb division is as good as Martinez
He cant really change his style now, And i dont expect him to..What happen to him was coming, I swear that Frog cintron might have won their fight if he didnt flew out of the ring.
He needs to take a couple of average fight at 154 and then go after the big fights, Good thing was he didnt take a 12 round beating, But the KO might affect him mentally though.
