Fight of the Year and the two best fighters from 154-160. Just watched the first fight and it was brutal. Both fighters were badly hurt at one point or another and both fighters took turns outboxing the other. Who wins Saturday night?
Martinez by decision. He basically figured out Pauls style in the first fight. This fight he gives Paul a beatdown
I'll bet with you, bud. (If I stick to this pick).
I got it in my VHS (i know) right now, going to score it again and everything. I'll make note of the momentum for each guy and rounds Martinez in particular tires.
Any luck?
BTW, I'm starting to lean toward Williams but I'm saving my pick until after the weigh-in.
The fight began to to turn in the fourth round, so I don't know about the "first half" of the bout. Martinez was rocked pretty bad toward the end of the fourth and lost most of the middle rounds. I really don't know what point you're trying to make but it was a great, tough, close fight. We can only hope we see anything close to that again.

That's how i see the seond half of the fight.
The first half when Martinez was fresh my impression was that after a few exchanges he knew PW didn't have the power to bother him and he thought he was getting the better of them (as did i due to him landing cleaner harder punches) so he elcted to trade.
It doesn't make sense otherwise, in my mind at least, since Martinez was/is able to "box" PW if he wants to ala Quintana I. *(not sure if i used the ala thing correct lol)

That's cool. You're basically saying that early on Martinez decided to stand and trade then thought better of it...or, really didn't have a choice because he was fatigued and Williams wouldn't stop coming. Well, that's when Williams had his success. And I don't think it was in Martinez' plan to give Williams success.

When I've seen pics of Martinez training I saw that he had real good hand speed even though he looks like he needs to cut a little more weight. When I watched Paul Williams' pad work it just seemed lazy to me. Martinez just seems a lot faster. I really can't make a prediction in this fight. If it's close, I think they'll give it to Williams again, but I think he'll have to revisit the pits of hell to get another win over Sergio.
I agree that Martinez tired later in the fight but very early on he was standing and trading with Williams, not something had to do. In the first half on the fight it wasn't as exciting as it was on account of PW sucsessfully cutting off the ring and forcing Martinez into exchanges, Sergio decided that on his own.
Both fighters had some success doing what they wanted to do. But it's clear your intent is to give Paul Williams no credit for Martinez fatigue or the punishment he also took. It wasn't a one sided fight no matter how you much you want create a fictional one.

Did you read his mind? Martinez didn't "use his legs" all 12 rounds because he couldnt. Why would he choose to take punishment and make it harder on himself. That's just stupid. And the Quintana fight was years ago. Time to let it go. Or I guess we can also talk about Martinez getting stopped by Margarito.

In the first Quintana fight PW averaged about 50 punches per round cuz Quintana used his lateral movement, kept turning PW, didn't let him get set and Paul couldn't get off cuz Carlos simply wasn't there to be hit. To say that Quintana is a poor man's Martinez is an understatement.
Sergio elected to stand and trade will PW alot of the time which is something he doesn't have to do. If he uses his footwork PW's workrate will be a non factor.
He chose not to, it wasn't on account of Williams brilliance. Martinez had the odd bump and bruise but looked essentially unscathed after the fight, PW looked like someone went to work on his face with a baseball bat. Don't kid yourself, Martinez inflicted alot more damage than PW did.

When Martinez stopped moving it was because he was tired. Paul Williams deserves some credit for that. It wasn't a one way fight for in favor of Martinez like you seem to think it was. I don't think he "chose" not to. Not after getting rocked in the fourth. There were times in the middle rounds where Williams was chasing him around the ring. He moved quite a bit but perhaps his older legs weren't quite as spry as Quintana's. He stood in the trenches because he had to. Nevertheless, I agree that Martinez landed the harder blows and did more damage, particularly in the early rounds and in the eighth. But watching the fight again, Martinez was pretty lumped up himself. Some of those exchanges were just brutal.
Anyway, I don't know who's going to win. I can see Martinez one-punching Williams to obscurity. And I can see Williams wearing him down to a decision or even a late stoppage. Possibilities are endless here.

I think it'll be just as close as the first one.
The difference, again, will be Williams' work rate. Judges love guys who keep throwing, and if the round is a toss up they tend to lean towards the guy who threw more.
I got PWilly by razor thin, debatable, decision again.
Fan of both guys, rooting for Martinez because I want to see a trilogy but actually picking Williams to win by a close UD. I just think the volume will be the difference again. Sergio will look better at times throughout the fight and will land the cleaner punches but Williams will just get a lot of work done, and I don't think Martinez has what it takes to match Williams' pace. Should be a good fight.
sergio wasn't all that hard for paul to find either.

Yeah, that's what I don't get. Like...umm, did you see the last fight? Both of them were in deep water! That was a rough fight. Martinez didn't outbox anybody easily when they met last year. Sh*t, his face was pretty lumped up at the end. I can see Martinez hurting PW with one shot and going for the kill. But if he can't do that, I think he's in for a long night.

I can't believe people are worried about sergios conditioning remember pwill looked very bad against cintron. PWill to see me atleast has been slipping a bit, and sergio seems to be on top of his game. That being said I think Pwills power will really come thru the second time. Williams 11th tko
I dont think he was really fatigued, Pavlik actually did quite well in those rounds. He kinda sussed his rhythm and started timing him with the jab. But when Sexy turned up the heat, it was a wrap.
I thought he was. Fatigue is why those jabs that were missing started landing. But whatever. It's a moot point. Hopefully Saturday is a good one.
