Hopkins losing his 1st fight might have been a crushing blow

He wasnt a world champion or a great but he was a top middleweight contender Quirino Garcia he lost his first 20 fights and never gave up and went on to become the 6th best middleweight in the world in the ring magazine ranking and won minor titles wbu, iba and the wbc international title
Jose Pipino Cuevas started 5 and 4 had 13 defense of his title WBA Welter
Manuel Ortiz started 17 and 10 held world banta title 15 defense and another 5 defense when regained title
Not a great fighter by any means but he was a titlist for quite a while - Johnny Nelson. I think he actually lost his first 3 fights. His record at the start of his career was awful.
There are quite a few fighters who've lost their first fight but I don't know if losing one fight can really be deemed a disaster. Rafa Marquez lost his debut, for instance, but I think it was against a former champ, so that's not a big deal.
Not terrible, but they didn't start off on the right foot.
Juan Manuel Marquez got a DQ losss in his first fight.
Bernard Hopkins lost his first fight.
Wilfredo Gomez drew in his first pro fight.
Again, they're not terrible starts, but not the kind of way you want to start either.
