Aside from Roger’s funny, yet ironic comments, Bert Sugar really makes a bold statement, it wasn’t entirely how it happened, but he pretty much hit it on the head. That’s just a random video of some predictions, but what did most of you think of this matchup when it was announced, and does that play into your belief today, or not, that Margarito used plaster in this fight.

I thought it was a hellva matchup. Going into the fight I picked cotto to win, I felt he was the better boxer, with the better skill set, and if anyone could stop Margarito; I thought it was Miguel. Looking back on the fight I still think if Cotto had worked the body, clinched, and had a little bit better stamina; he could have probably still won that fight by SD IMO.
Margarito, what can I say about the dude, he was a terminator in that fight, walking threw everything Cotto threw, and then smiling at him (was sick)... I've never taken credit away from him for this win. I thought it was a hellva display of will, heart, perseverance, and one of the best chins I've seen in a long time to take that kind of fire power and still charge forward, and absolute war (one I hope they do again in the near future).
I remember picking Cotto by close decision, being a fan of Miguel but secretly hoping Margarito would win just because I was so sick of people dissing him and calling him overrated, etc. I thought it was a great style matchup and one that would be determined in the final three rounds. I thought a win would plant Cotto as #1 on the pound for pound list, that's how much I respected Tony. And it was the first time I ever rooted against Miguel but I remember watching the fight with some fellow writers, trainers and a couple fighters and when Margarito induced the stoppage, I leaped out of my seat and raised both hands in the air. I was so happy for him--to see him get the respect that had eluded him for so long. Ahh well...
I was so happy for him for the same reason. And, I rooted for him in that fight. I was fan, I always knew what he could do. And, he worked hard and for so long to get that respect and for that respect to end so quick was sad to me.
Back in 2006, I ordered Margarito's career collection. After sitting through all those fights, I knew exactly why no welter dared mention his name. His chin was godly - what a mindf*ck on Cotto to land those punches and watch Tony sneer before jogging forward.
Watch yourself now, according to some here. You're just stating Arum facts not true facts.
I been debated that part of Margarito being the most avoided WW at that time. No elite WW wanted to fight this guy and it was because he was a serious threat It is a shame that posters on here didn't really follow the WW division at the turn of the century and is the reason why they didn't notice how much of a problem Margarito was.
Good stuff
For those of you who picked Cotto...today, do you feel like Cotto lost b/c of Margarito's possible use of plaster or is it just a case of styles make fights?
Myself - since Margs got caught, I've watched the fight again, and maybe he had plaster in his wraps...somebody once said, 'of course, it looks like Margarito's punches are slow, he's throwing bricks around, how fast do you expect him to be?' But Cotto just fought the wrong gameplan, he kept kneeling his head, Margs kept connecting on uppercuts. Lackluster defense & movement, he was caught against the ropes too often...Margarito kept pressing forward, and if he had actually used plaster of paris in his wraps then that obviously played a big role in breaking Cotto down, ultimately leading him to a victory.
Styles make fights man.
Cotto did good early work, so did margarito, I think cotto marg laned the heavier shots in the frist 3/4rounds, but they were very entertainign with both guys connecting.
Mid-Late rounds were all marg, Think cos cotto was static, he lacked any kind of moveemnt at all (due to margs heavy pucnhes early on) , margarito took advantage and got the win
I would love to see a rematch in 2011 though

The part that shocked me then, and now when I rewatch it, is how easily Margo walked through Cotto's shots. Regardless of handwrap insert or no insert, that is what determined the fight. Cotto simply couldn't hurt or even slow Margo down. I just think Cotto is the perfect opponent for Margo, just like Margo is the perfect opponent for Mosley. If they were to fight again I would put heavy money down on Margo destroying him again.
I was a big fan of both guys but favored Margo cause he had the better resume at WW and came in with a lot of momentum. Cotto didn't go to the body and didn't hold him when he had to.
At the present time I don't credit Margo with anything proven cheater and cheated the public. As a boxing fan I can't endorse ppl like him and especially when he refuses to come clean about the accusations of the Mosley fight. It is a disgrace that he is getting a huge payday cause it is riding on the controversy of the handwraps
I thought Cotto would be able to outpoint him.
Controversey aside, Tony earned that fight. He did great body work early in the fight and he fought the right fight in order to beat Cotto.
What an incredible fight though. They ended the elite part of each other's careers that night.
I always knew that it would be fireworks. But I remember picking Miguel Cotto though. I thought that his boxing talent would win him the fight although Tony was a tough, rugged fighter.
But, I vividly remember Cotto landing some BOMBS and Tony just didn't stop coming forward, I literally couldn't believe what I was seeing. Tony landed some huge shots as well too though. One of the best fights I've seen, but the damage done to both fighters is apparent.

I called Margarito beating Cotto, proved I was right. Margarito had been waiting for this kind of fight throughout all of his career, there was no way he was going down after all the hard work he had put in.
This was a huge fight for both men, and it turned out to be one of the greatest Welterweight fights of all time. Seeing Cotto land those bombs the first half of the fight was downright scary, but Margarito's resilence to continue pressing foward and put in work while absorbing those kind of shots was not human.

My thoughts exactly as the fight was happening...

Was a great 147lbs fight, between two great champions. First 4/5 rounds were even, i had cotto edging them. mid-late rounds, margarito landed bigger shots, cotto's movement went.
