... been following boxing my whole life. No Ceilings/Burner i almost always agree with your posts. Your usually right on the money.
I hang out here and read mostly, rarely post though. After the above ^^ comment, i thought that i should ask you WTF >>> wat tha fucc are you thinking man.
..........Roy Jones didn't have skills........ you finally lost me, man, still can't believe you said that shyte. Roy Jones was the most dominant fighter after Tyson. Period. Roy had skills, accuracy, power, combinations ... and MOST of all, he came and brought the fire and made opponents look amature... he didn't run and pot shot like floyd. I am a floyd fan though... Pac too, but lets not fake the funk and act like floyd bangs, cause he don't. Burner if you think Roy Jones didn't have any skills, then you must think the same about Pacman ... cause manny and roy are cut from the same cloth bro.
Roy didn't have skills...your dreaming...and you must have never watched boxing in the 90's then.
Peace out
This was THE point at which his downfall began. What ever steroids he took to gain that 24 lbs of muscle that quick for the john ruiz fight, made his body change, and it never was the same again after he lost the weight.
it was crazy how roy was shreaded at 175 lbs .... then he was suddenly shreaded at 199 lbs ...... after spending my life at gold's gym i know for a fact that 24 lbs of lean muscle gain is IMPOSSIBLE . Period. WITHOUT JUICE helping the process.
His speed was sapped after the ruiz fight. that tarver shyte had me fucced up for a while man. seriously, i couldn't believe that.
what a fall from grace
That is a good point, I suspect the same thing happened as well
Jones didn't and doesn't have great fundamental skills, he basically admitted as much before the Hopkins rematch when he said Hopkins was a guy that had to climb a ladder to get to the top of the roof but he was so gifted that he didn't need the ladder and jumped straight up.
Roy's natural skills (i.e. talent) overshadowed his lack of fundamental skills that were exposed as he got older.
In his prime/youth, he was just so gifted naturally that I believe he felt that he didn't have to hone in on the basics like your standard fighter that need equal amounts of fundamental skills and inherent talent to make it in this sport.
All in all, he was a marvel in his hey day, I just wish he'd hang it up. I don't want the guy hurt, he already slurs and speaks at times incoherently enough to make me uncomfortable
Roy had no skills? That has to be taken out of context.
Roy had very unique skills, that no one else really possessed.
You can't train a fighter to fight like Roy and expect him to be successful. Roy is not a textbook type boxer.
Stupid to say.
He just didn't have fundamental defensive skills.
No doubt, but neither did Muhammad Ali or Sugar Ray Robinson...keeping the word fundamental in my mind. All of these guys had natural, God given talents that allowed them to do things defensively that are against the fundamental skills of boxing. Example, Ali could fight you while he was retreating and he often times let a fighter get-off to tire him out. Ali was definitely open to left hooks because of him keeping his right hand low. Sugar Ray Robinson would get hit by straight ahead fighters who had good speed and power. At the same time most people agree that he had the total package. Roy Jones used his lightening fast reflexes and footwork to counter-balance his defensive flaws. He broke many fundamental rules in boxing, like the lead upper-cut and left hook, but he was so fast he could get away with it. Unlike other sports, in boxing your best defense is an awesome and imposing offense.
Depends how he meant it. Burner is usually retarded but I can see what hes saying. Roy relied more on phenomenal speed, reflexes and natural talent rather than basic boxing fundamentals
I was a big fan but look at it like this if you fight garbage you great except for a young bhop / toney, their no notable wins,an its not roy fault it was nobody 2 fight roy got away with speed and playing 2 the crowd ,he was the show,
when he fought tarver (1st counterpuncher)it was a different style he never faced . Bottom line roy was an still is gifted offensively, never had defense.
i thought griffin was a counterpuncher as well

what a fall from grace
like bobby czyz used to say...greatness grew old in a day...tarver 1 was gutsy tho..
Go read through my posts in this and the other thread.
Im right. Sorry Roy fans. Im one myself. But he relied soley on his athleticism and it cost him.
He relied mostly on his reflexes to get him out of danger, his offensive skills were definitely up there (but were also damaged with his loss of reflexes / speed) and if he followed the fundamentals of boxing e.g keep hands up, then chances are that he would of limited his own athleticism which is most probably one of the reasons that he didn't, his defense relied solely on his reflexes and now that they're shot it's really shown in his late fights.
Co-sign
from what i saw, after he moved down from heavyweight, he lost a great deal of overall strength and the snap in his punches was gone...

roy jones was very skilled actually aside from his natural talents. you should realize though that once a fighter's natural talents is gone he can no longer utilize his skills to its full potential, unless you're a very crafty fighter like hopkins which unfortunately roy jones was not.
thats just not true, rjj didnt have the fundamental skills necessary. ****, once rrj's athleticism declined he became a bum. what was the last fighter u see drop off like that??? this is just the hard facts. even guys like sugar ray leonard, pernell whitaker and oscar de la hoya, **** even shan, didnt drop off the way roy did. their decline was gradual. we didnt even kno roys was coming unitl knockout after knockout.
ppl wanna hate burner and sure he can be annoying but the facts totally support what he said. most ppl would not survive in this sport if they fought the way roy did. he did it because he was athletic as **** not because he was a fundamentally and technically sound boxer.
Stop trolling the thread. Cant you say this about ANY fighter today. Likeeeeeee Tim Bradley?
Get off the Williams routine. Its old and you bring it into every thread bro.
Hey man take it easy...how did the Lions do yesterday by the way?
being around these boards for quite some time, you notice that these types of threads are duplicated and duplicated and duplicated
85% of the stuff "discussed" on here has been beat to death 1,000,000 times. i don't see how people conjure up the energy to keep discussing the same thing.
no disrespect to the thread starter.
