So basically it works like this, someone says a modern day fighters name like Roy Jones Jr. for example.
Then the next person names a few fighters that were like him, that fought before Roy Jones Jr. turned professional.
Someone could say, Ray Leonard, Muhammad Ali etc.
This could be hard to do, but it will also be fun because new boxing fans and people wanting to learn more can look up the fighters that are named. They can learn more about boxing history, I'm interested to know more myself.
I'll go first... Mike Tyson
Two simple ones that spring to mind.
Ray Mercer - Sonny Liston: Both stocky guys with shotgun jabs and thunderous power in their two-fisted attacks. Tended to remain relatively upright, using their long jabs to break down opponents, trap them in the corners and unload. Liston had a tad more power and a better boxing brain, Mercer had a better chin and more speed.
Samuel Peter - Earnie Shavers: Powerful sluggers whose lack of technique was compensated for with excellent thudding power. Both mixed up their combos to head and body, battering opponents whom they had stunned and knocking them to the canvas. Tended to get undone with those who could box them on the outside.
Roy Jones Jr - Charley Burley
Bernard Hopkins - Ezzard Charles and Jersey Joe Walcott
Jack Johnson/ Prime Vitali
Don't see that at all.
Edwin Valero - Khoasai Galaxy
Vitali Klitschko - Tony Canzoneri / Primo Carnera
Andre Berto-Davey Moore
Miguel Cotto-Wilfredo Gomez
Still though not really, they was both punchers that had plenty of power in each hand but that's were the comparison ends, Sonny had a stalking style where he liked to use his jab and stay at distance where he would soften them up and then punish when he saw a chance.
Tyson would cut off the ring and stay mid-close range more bobbing and weaving.
Anyway, next person ?.
Also with Tyson some say he was like Sonny Liston in some ways.
Wouldn't say he was much like Liston at all style wise, he was somewhat similar in his demeanor and his ring presence.
Even then though Sonny didn't like talking to the press much where as Mike couldn't get enough of the attention.
