It's bad enough that idiots quote PunchStat numbers as if all punches were equal... Even more infuriating is that people treat these numbers as gospel. Are fans under the impression that PunchStat is some high tech, highly accurate super computer which uses lasers and some real NASA **** to record punches landed?
It's a couple of clowns in the crowd pressing buttons.
HBO never really mentions this, because it would embarrass who ever came up with the "PunchStat" idea. It is less reliable than Olympic scoring. It has no business being taken seriously.
I guess it is OK if forum posters are citing PunchStat statistics, but now I am seeing serious boxing journalists treat them as gospel. This is disgusting. PunchStat is a total fraud. It should NEVER be mentioned without a disclaimer that it is really just two clowns in the crowd pressing buttons.
Hey Kevin Malone did you run with your tail between your legs again? After i TROOTHED YOU.

Has anyone else seen a fight where they show the PunchStat numbers from a round and you just have to laugh? I can't remember any specific fights, but I remember a couple of times where the numbers were just an absolute joke.
Maybe the minimum wage PunchStat clown was drunk those nights?
Pirog-Jacobs
The punch stats actually may have been accurate for that fight, but those "stats" didn't even begin to tell the story of that fight.
That fight is a perfect example where you need to throw the punch stats out the window and just watch the fight with your own two eyes.

a bunch of the hopkins-calzaghe rounds come to mind. compubox would say calzaghe landed like 15 punches and you were like wtf where? even if you go back and slow mo all his punches you can't even find anything clean. maybe 1 or 2 taps to the side of the head or to his back while clinching but do those count?

Yes thats true but the fact remains is that the punchstats guys are biased to particular fighters, these arent just general workers they are either former boxers or other industry guys who have their prefrence. HBO uses the punchstat as the holy grail and this really affects the viewers score cards and opinions.
Yesterday was the perfect example of this, the UK HBO Feed had the fight close with an edge to mora and had logical discussion while the US HBO feed was just hating on everything and using the punch stat to judge the fight.
99% of the people who saw the fight saw the US Version and thats why everyone is crying Mosley got robbed because they are swayed by HBO's bias.
True.
I was watching a stream with Doug Fischer commentating and he had Mora winning all but 3 rounds.
It wasn't pretty but Mora definately won.

Good post. The PunchStat clowns are definitely biased. I have seen fights where the numbers are just a total joke. The fake PunchStat numbers also sway people's opinions. When you quote statistics and let people believe that they come from some incredibly high-tech, accurate system, it can really color people's opinion of what happened in the fight.
The numbers are fraudulent. HBO's behavior is fraudulent because they almost never mention that "PunchStat" is not some cutting edge super computer with laser beams for eyes, but is just a couple of clowns in the crowd clicking buttons.
It is WORSE than Olympic scoring (which at least has 5 clowns instead of two and they don't have to try to track punches thrown). Maybe that is the OLD Olympic scoring, but you get my point... PunchStat is actually far worse.
punchstat numbers are for casual fans who don't really know alot about boxing "ie ring generalship, etc" and it gives them a little better understanding of who might be winning the fight

Has no effect on the official judges as they don't have access to the numbers so I don't see the point.

Exactly. I don't know of anyone credible who treats them as gospel.
Go read Steve Cofield's articles about last night's fights over on Yahoo.
OK, Cofield is a hack, but this quoting of PunchStat statistics (without even mentioning "according to PunchStat" or explaining how the numbers were determined) is really starting to tilt me.
Not fake, just inaccurate. It's just a human tallying punches, they're as subjective as anything.
Exactly. So to quote them as "fact" is ridiculous.
Not only do they not mention how low-tech and unscientific PunchStat actually is, now they don't even say "according to PunchStat..." Now they just say "Mr. X landed 163 out of 299 punches..."
TOTAL BULL****
Yep its a total SHAM. Why dont they put some RFID chips in each glove and have both boxers gloves linked together? The computer ringside will be able to check if a punch lands or not by the location of everything. Sure it will cost a mil or two to develop fully but it will take the boxing game to a whole new level.
Theres also a way you can do it with having a 4d camera layout on top and around the ring that will graph the whole fight and will be able to map and see the clean punches and track them all.
Both of these methods work but they cost money to develop. Its a drop in the bucket if HBO,SHOWTIME all pitch in and work on this.
Dont forget the punchstat guy can be payed off and is prone to human error especially when you got fast punchers.
