It's kind of hard to say because nobody is really knocking people out with body punches. But I would go with Celestino Caballero. I've made it a priority to watch some of his fights recently and the guy is a beast. If you watch he usually goes to the body more than the head in the early rounds and it's really effective. Like they say "kill the body and the head will die". You could say he doesnt hit particuarly hard but he knocked down Daniel Ponce De Leon with a body punch.
Overall I just think he goes to the body better than anyone else I can think of right now. You can hear the pounding noise when he it and he doesnt just throw ones and two's, he throws and keeps throwing.
I'm sure somebody will be able to come up with somebody else....
But there's definetly not as many as there used to be. People tend to go head hunting now. But I like fighters who go to the body and I think more people should do it. I watched Caballero-Leal about an hour ago and it made me think if Floyd Mayweather went to the body, he would proberbly knock out more opponents.
It took me right back to the Shane Mosley fight, Shane was basically resigned to losing after about round 6. If Floyd had hit him with some powerful body shots for the next 6 rounds then I really think he would have stopped him. But that's just not his style, he does it against southpaws because it's easier with the left hand but he doesnt do it enough. I think.
Anyway. Who is the best body puncher right now in your opinion?
im not sure who id pick now but 2 of the best i ever saw were jirov & frans botha...botha with those short arms would get tagged but he always went back to the body
Cotto.
I also like Timothy Bradley. Although he didn't go to the body much in his last fight, I think he was just testing the waters at 147. Bradley usually throws plenty of bodyshots in combinations. See his fight with Kendall Holt. He seriously reduced Holt's workrate.
although he's not known for being a devastating body puncher, juan manuel marquez is a great body puncher.
i just got done rewatching jmm vs casamayor and jmm threw some hellacious body shots with pin point accuracy. jmm is such a fluid fighter he can easily step to the side and just bang the body, it's a thing of beauty.
my favorite strategy of a fighter is going to the body, i think it's an awesome plan of attack, and it is for me the most beautiful thing to watch in boxing.
mayweather is a good body puncher, i'd like to see more of when he does fight, although i am a huge critic of floyd, i admire his talent and punch selection from time to time.
mosley too is a good body puncher, i like watching him rip shots to the body.
hopkins too, just you have to watch really carefully to see them since he's sneaky about it.
also, calzaghe was a good body puncher, he had to be with his style.
I think Hopkins is very good. But like Mayweather he's a classic example of a boxer who is really careful in picking his punches.
I'm not sure about Mosley. I always though of him as abit of a head-hunter. Against Floyd he really should have tried more because your not going to land head shots against Mayweather. Unless you tire him out like Castillo did and then you have a chance. Mosley strikes me as somebody who always wants the knockout and I think it's been his downfall in a few fights. Particaurly with Winky Wright. It's hard to say how he should have fought against Wright but he definetly shouldnt have tried to knock him out.
I think the best are Cotto, Arce, Caballero, Marquez and Mayweather.
I love fighters who go the body. I think it's become underrated in boxing.
Ya youre right about the snap and thats what i was talking about, i want to say he doesnt "turn over" his punches, but effective regardless. Heres an Alvarez body shot, 1:35 into it. I guess i like those one shot can take you out body punchers ha

That was really good. The guy was already moving backwards but that really shook him. Alvarez has KO power in both hands and he makes alot of comittment to his punches also. He did that well with J.M Cotto.
In terms of technical brilliance, I would honestly have to say Mayweather..His body work used to set up his right hands are second to none. In terms of ferocity, I would have to go with Angulo..
He's very good but he just doesnt do it enough. For some reason he always does it against southpaws and hardly ever against orthodox fighters. He murdered Judah and Mitchell to the body but with othodox fighters he only jabs to the body. This is because when you lean down against an orthodox fighter you leave yourself open but against a southpaw. The right side of the body is exposed (the liver) and it's perfect for the left hook.
He used to do it more in the lower weight classes. I think now he's in the bigger weight classes he wants to fight the perfect fight because he knows one punch can put him in trouble. I know he came forward against Mosley but he was still very careful about the punches he was throwing. He used to let it go more at 130 and 135 because he knew he was stronger than the other guys. He's much more cautious and careful now.

and i was impressed with sergio martinez' body work, he can place good shots to the body with his angles and movement.
there are others that just aren't popping in my head right now.

he also seemed to gut Cuello in the second round with a left hook, although Cuello survived it certainly looked painful. good signs.
Cabellero, Cotto, Arce and Bute are all good choices.
on a side note: you dont necessarily need body shot KOs to be an excellent body puncher. its all about wearing down your opponent and setting up punches(although the KOs are very nice too)

lol. Tell that to Daud Yordan! I think it's just that he doesnt have the real snap in his punches like a Cotto or Arce. If you watch Caballero nearly all of his knockouts come from the accumulation of blows. The thing I like is the commitment he makes to it. He never forgets to throw to the body. It's really effective. Celestino's weakness is his defence isnt great but if he takes most of your energy away his body punching, then it doesnt matter as much.
I havent seen much of Alvarez. Has he KO'd anyone with a body shot?

Cabellero throws a lot of effective body punches but he doesnt throw them with bad intentions. Marquez is probably the best at using body punches to get what he wants, but Ima go with Saul Alvarez. His look the most damaging to me and I would not want to be taking one of those to the liver.

I remember Arce-Rojas, Rojas was outboxing him pretty badly for 5 rounds and then in the 6th Arce landed a vicious left to the liver that basically ended the fight then and there. That punch was so loud it almost hurt me, lol.
lol. I think that's another thing, when you hear the punch you know it was very good. I might get Arce's career set on DVD soon and then i'll get back to you on his body punching. So far iv'e only seen his bouts with Alvarez, Hussein I and II and Mijares. I should proberbly watch more.
Mijares made me a fan when he beat Arce. When you watch the way both of them fight you would have expected Jorge to run through him. Mijares was a good defensively with a very good jab but Arce was a monster who throws 100 punches per round and never stops coming at you. You'd think that Arce would have got to him. But Cristian tied him in knots and landed about 300 more punches. That was an amazing performence.
RIght now, Miguel Cotto and Jorge Arce.
How did I forget about Miguel Cotto? :boxing:
I think for power you go with Cotto and Arce but I just feel Caballero goes to the body really well. He does it in combinations, it's crazy. And the consisntency of him is very good also, he also breaks down his opponents with his body work. Just imagine if he had the power of an Arce or Cotto. Everyone would be raving about him but I don't think KO power has to be the defining factor. It's got to be connected to technique aswell.
Pernell Whitaker was a great body puncher even though he didnt knock people around with his punches. Cotto and Arce have some sick body shot knockouts though. Cotto against Foreman, Gomez and Quintana were crazy. I havent seen that much of Jorge Arce, but the knockout against Rosendo Alvarez was vicious.
