He doesn't get appreciated due to the weight class he fights in and he he doesn't get respect because of his usual fighting style. Coming into this fight, the general consensus was that Calderon wouldn't stand and trade with a bigger, harder hitting Segura, but he did.
He took a knee because he got hurt to the point where he couldnt continue anymore. A Fight Of The Year candidate doesn't consist of one fighter dominating a whole fight, it consists of two opponents going back and forth, constantly changing the momentum of the fight and thats what Calderon contributed to it. Instead of disrespecting him, give him props for giving the sport of a Boxing a BADLY needed FIGHT.
Hell yes, congrats to Segura, props to him and Calderon. It takes two fighters to make a great fight and we got one last night... much needed in this f*cked-up 2010 boxing year.
He's been slipping since Cazeras. Anyone could see that.
Shiiit... I tried to explain that yesterday and the e-tough guys here screamed to high hell I was full of it.
Just a reasonable, accurate observation and it takes nothing away from Giovanni.
im not boricua or mexican & i dont care for calderun errr calderon's style, but the man deserves massive respect. the guy is what 4'11 fighting featherweights & superfeatherweights by fight night.
he's a true warrior. He aint no cherry picking ducker who preserved his undefeated record like some mayweat errr people.
Oooppsss, LOL, good post....
Capetillo is part of his team. :D
Nosh!t.........LOL, we all know that here CHiKA, he is a great trainer. A cheater that don't respect our sport, but a great trainer.
Here's my respect for him.
Style is soft and rubbery like the pink part of a pussy.
I could fall asleep in between the end of his fights and watching a Freddy Krueger movie.
Glad to watch him quit on a body shot right in front of his home crowd. It gave me a wooouuudie.
Great fight, Segura did what he was supposse to do, he let my boy slap the sh!t out of him for 6 rounds and take his legs out of the fight. Dude was following da plan 2 da line. Simple... Something anybody can do but 30+ never got it done. Props to Segura and his corner. But, please can somebody tell me that he is a great fighter with out his chin and his stamina. Just saying....
Big props to Calderon for going toe to toe with segura.
Big props to Segura for knowing his limitations and coming with a game plan according to his limitations
Great fights both deserve big props

who isn't giving segura any credit?
there is actually quite a few on here who say the only reason Segura won was because of the slippage of Calderon and not the effort put forth
it's sour grapes to be honest
No disrespect at all, when I say typical Mexican, I dont follow the notion myself, but that statement implies the come forward fighter who is willing to take 2 or 3 to give 1. Thats all I meant, Segura did what he had to do against someone like Calderon who is always moving, my thing is I wish Segura would have kept his hands up more, I think that way he probably would have gotten Calderon out of there sooner.
cool
but understand my man that even if you meant no dis to anyone the way it comes off is a bit disrespectful in stating that a Mexican fight in typical fashion is a face first fighter when quite the opposite has happened. While guys like Segura and Ponce typify what the Mexican fighter was known for there are far more who hybrid both an all attack attitude with some actual boxing skill
those guys are now the typical Mexican fighter now
So I'm supposed to pity him cuz' he's small?
You're not supposed to do anything, I don't care what you do, but the guy deserves respect cause he's fought a few killers who were much bigger than him, and until last night has always came out on top.
And he fought his heart out last night. That's all I'm saying. You don't see me trying to discredit Segura, dude brought it and deserved the dubs.
The two brought us an awesome fight, no one should be complaining about anything. I am just simply of the opinion; fact really, that Calderon has been slipping for some time.
Calderon slipping is still better than 90% of the fighters on the planet, so it's still a great win for Segura.

good post :hail:
Calderon's a really skillful fighter, he just ran into a fighter who wouldn't be denied.
Segura chose the right tactics and systematically broke him down.

You shouldnt assume Im black. I can name more mexicans who quit in fights than any other nationalilty but for some reason mexicans are supposed to be warriors?
is there any particular reason why you took this the nationalistic route?
and before you state well he started it with the dirty black thing YOU started it by with the whole typical Mexican fighter thing. Any reason why you felt the need to say that considering Mexican fighters have evolved?
Yup, and these "typical Mexicans" somehow keep fighting ways to win big fights by crushing the supposedly "more skilled" opponents.
Keep underestimating their skills at destruction and you'll keep being disappointed when your fighters are on their backs.
Well, like I said, its easier to say this after a loss, but contrast it with the praise he got after beating Uribe a few months ago and you see how people change their tunes.
Many have been saying that for a while. People were impressed with the Uribe win BECAUSE he had been slipping. Not to mention that Calderon could fight at minimumweight and still be one of the smallest guys in the division.
Segura still fights dumb, doesnt compensate for stamina and we saw how that cost him in one fight on HBO. Just your typical mexican fighter.
yup pretty much. he beat calderon based on being bigger, stronger, and younger which gives him the advantage in the stamina department. its not shocking at all that segura won, i told my wife the same thing before the fight started. segura is nothing special just a wild puncher with decent stamina. as soon as he fights someone bigger, stronger, and younger than calderon with some kind of boxing skills segura loses.
of course of course...
:ugh:
Do you deny this?
And comparing the sentiment for this fight to that of Dawson/Pascal is inaccurate.
I was one of the many that felt Dawson winning was a foregone conclusion. I admit that no doubt.
I thought Calderon could easily lose this fight. A fighter like him, when the legs go he's done. And I saw a lot of people feeling the same way.
I'm not gonna say Calderon is done...that's unfair to Segura. Calderon was game, but to say he's the fighter he was 5 fights ago is just wrong man.
