Wow, as both a boxing and MMA fan - it's really pathetic to see the majority of the comments made by die hard boxing fans. Here are some of the main points I constantly see them bring up to defend boxing:
1) "Couture should be a "man" and go fight Toney in a boxing match."
Um no, Toney was the one who begged to fight in MMA, Couture and 99% of MMA fighters have no desire to box which is a completely different sport. Basically these fans are saying that while the MMA fighter would easily beat the boxer in minutes or less in a REAL fight, the only way for the boxer to win would be to RESTRICT all techniques that can be used in a REAL fight and only allow punching... uh yeah, congratulations.
2) "A more athletic boxer in their prime would do much better in MMA."
Obviously everyone learns differently and some boxers may pick up on learning grappling in MMA faster, but this statement makes no sense. Regardless of how in shape someone is - that isn't going to make up for him knowing nothing about grappling against someone who has been training in wrestling and submissions for years. Guess what, your favorite boxer will get dominated the same way Toney was if he hasn't spent years training for grappling & MMA.
3) "Couture isn't a man for not standing with Toney" or the laughable "wrestling is gay, fight like a man" quotes. Please, ask Toney how gay it was when Couture was on top throwing punches and then choking him unconscious. I also encourage anyone who says this to actually show up at a BJJ gym and then come back and let us know how "gay" it was when you were getting dominated with chokes, armbars, etc. Accept the fact that wrestling is a major part of fighting.
Anyway, it's funny to see these die hard boxing fans who are apparently offended by MMA get so defensive with their excuses when Toney lost. Yet real fighters like Tyson, Hatton, etc. all recognize how both boxing and MMA are great sports but also understand they wouldn't last a minute in a MMA fight without years of training beforehand.
A real fight?.....Toney would have literally ate coutures chest if he lay on top of him like that...he would have sunk his teeth into him...i know i would have
Wouldn't change a thing. Even in the dark days when anything was legal in MMA fights went down to who had the best ground game.
In a 1 vs 1 street fight, MMA is more useful too. Apart from that they are two different sports. Toney's balance was so bad he couldn't even sprawl. He is much overweight for his leg strength. He can't make it in MMA like that. Couture took him down at the first try.
you can't blame us die hard boxing fans for WANTING to see Couture get KTFO in a BOXING match with James....come on now, you EXPECT us to give props to Randy?!?...for what?!?....I dont get it, maybe we should pay hommage to those pitchers who struck out Michael Jordan while he played baseball :ugh:....no die hard boxing fan is gonna hold that MMA fight against James and I hope no die hard MMA fan will give Randy props for choking out a MMA novice....0 fights and 9 months training...WOW, way to go Randy :lame:
If you proclaim to be a die hard boxing fan, why would you even WANT to see Randy Couture in a BOXING match? smh........

This is spot on.
I aint embarassed that Toney lost. Im more embarassed at the ignorance of a lot of boxing fans and the comments they make. Most of them couldnt bust a grape anyhow..

Same could be said for a MMA fighter, it's really not rocket science is it? Anybody knows a boxer with zero takedown defence and many other aspects of the sport will not succeed in MMA. However, the same can be said for a MMA fighter stepping into a boxing ring, again the MMA fighter would have zero defence and would lose.
Yes, in a REAL fight in town at night, you'd lay down on the ground trying to choke out the guy you're fighting.. What's up with that? NEVER get on the ground in a street fight, wops he had had a buddy.. Damn, now your face is all broken and messed up.. Because it got stomped on while you were trying to choke him out..
Anyway, to the point.
There's a reason why MMA fighters train MMA and boxers train boxing. It's what their best at, therefore putting either one into a fight where their weaknesses is exposed as clearly as it was in the Toney - Couture fight is ridiculous.
You can always say a boxer will beat a MMA fighter in a boxing match and vice versa. Because that's what would happen, so why all the hate? It's two martial arts, enterainment, watch the one you prefer and stop hating so much on the other. They're all brave for stepping in the ring.
