I didn't hear many calling him a warrior before the Margarito wrap scandal.I did, however, hear many question his heart after he ran in the latter rounds against an old Shane Mosley. The Margarito finish didn't do his reputation any better, either.
Say what you want about Antonio Margarito, but he took his beating like a man.Had the ref not stepped in,Margarito would have gotten back to his feet, smile on his face, and remained there until his body could no longer withstand the ordeal.
The amount of credit Cotto received from the Clottey fight was pretty pathetic, too.Only in this era could a fighter be credited for lasting the distance with a cut.Not a broken jaw,not a broken hand - A cut, just above the eye.As far as I recall,he did a hell of a lot of running in that fight, looking to survive and hope for a decision, based on his early work, rather than looking to claim a decisive one.
I don't like Cotto, but I don't hate him, either.I don't regard him as a coward, nor a warrior.I think he deserves credit for consistently fighting world class opposition,in an era in which most so called "elite" opposition are too busy at the negotiating table. But at the same time,I'm not going to regard him as something he's clearly not.
And I also don't think those in attendance at his fight with Manny Pacquiao, who booed him mercilessly for running away and trying to survive, would disagree, either, - Atleast if they were honest.
In a sport as dangerous as it is,it's an admirable act. There's a reason why fighters like Danny "little red" Lopez and Matthew Saad Muhammad are as well thought of as they are.
The mast majority of those inside the Staples center were there to see Margarito. He was the main draw/attraction for this fight. He got the s^it beaten out of him and wasn't even competitive against Mosley, but his heart, chin and determination made the fight about as exciting a mismatch as you'll ever come across.
There's no question he's got heart and a great chin.
But I see no difference between what he did against Mosley and what Cotto did against him.
Both fought until they could fight no more.
Margarito, like an idiot, just stood there and got the **** kicked out of him. Cotto took a knee cause he could hardly stand.
Both gave literally everything they had. But one made the choice that could help lengthen his career, and one just took unnecessary punishment so he could maintain his "warrior label".
It's really our fault. These guys get punched in the face for a living for god sakes and we have the nerve to call them cowards and make them take the kind of punishment Margarito took so they won't be called cowards when it could serious damage the fighter.
That's fine and all, but that doesn't change the fact that they were b and c fighters.
The Klitschko's have cleaned out the HW division, but how many A fighters are on their resume. I admire Cotto for fighting the best. I just don't think he's as good as his fans make him out to be.
I guess your one of few who think cotto is not A level. maybe the 30 plus people who call cotto a warior are wrong.i guess the 6 that say he not are right ?
And people overrate this "warrior" term. The TS said Margarito took his beating like a man?
What is so honorable about being outclassed and getting destroyed, but letting the guy beat the **** out of you even more just so you can say "oh I didn't stay down".
That is not being a warrior, that is being an idiot.

I suggest you start watching fights that aren't limited to the last five years, lad.
You make a very good point here. For those of us that were born or bred around boxing or are just religious fans for 15-20 years remember the 'Glory' days of this beautiful sport and watching fighters literally put everything on the line. Cuts back then were just another day at the office. Getting knocked out cold or fighting until you did gained you heart. This is why this subject is touchy because we have old school vs. new school boxing. Sure, Cotto taking knees and backing away looks bad to us, but new schoolers only have seen this guy and this generation pour out their heart to their standard. There are very little fighters today that can compare toughness with old school. So while we bash Cotto because we expect the heart we grew up on, we have to show a little love for him and this generation and their version of heart. But in no way is he as tough as his predecessors and I dont think anyone will deny that. I also think the dude doesnt love boxing and that is needed for that extra bit of heart hes missing. I believe he just sees it as his 'Job'.
That's fine and all, but that doesn't change the fact that they were b and c fighters.

Your opinion, fair enough.
That right there is enough to show you Cotto isn't an A level fighter. Everyone you mentioned are B or C level fighters. Clottey is not impressive and is a B fighter himself.
Mayweather is an A level fighter. Pacquiao is an A level fighter. Cotto isn't not. Not even close. He'd barely crack PR's top 10, that is if he even made it.
Two fighters who only fight when EVERYTHING is in their favor, THESE GUYS ARE DEFINITELY WARRIORS.(sarcasm)
I mis-voted...but Cotto is a true warrior...he is not involved with any boxing politics, he just wants to fight and be well compensated. You put Jesus Christ in front of him and he'll fight.
If all fighters have even the smallest amount of cojones and spirit in them that Cotto has, then this sport wouldn't be on life support waiting for a May/Pac fight so much
How I feel.
You said Margarito would have stayed in with Mosley until he could take no more. I feel that's what he did with Margarito. He didn't look for a way out like Kermit did against Paul Willias when the heat started getting turned up, the heat was on, he hung n there against a man, in my estimation, who had loaded gloves and got battered until he could take no more.
He has faced adversity in fights before and stared it down. He could have backed out of the Clottey fight, he was given the chance (I was there great atmosphere btw) he said nah.
Torres the same, even Pacquiao he was getting mullered could have been called off but he hung in ad I personally was pissed off that he wasn't allowed to hear the final bell having stayed in and taken that punishment.
Don't diminish the heart of a man who always comes to fight and put on a show as I'm pretty sure there are a whole heap of people you could have made this thread about correctly before you even thought of Cotto.

Cotto was fighting with a bad cut over his eye to begin with. Clottey might not be the mentally strongest guy in the boxing, but he is still one of the most skilled. He is a very accurate counter puncher, very strong defensive rock. He gives everyone issues, maybe except Pacquiao ( I am starting to contemplate whether that fight was even legit).
Everyone I listed was a top fighter at their weight class, man.
His best win is a close decision many thought he lost. He joins a list of Margarito recent KO victims that include Kermit Cintron and Golden Johnson.
Before the split decision against Mosley his best win was.........wait for it..............
Zab Judah
Cotto is just plain overrated.
See, before people start running their mouths they should get their facts straight.
Mosley fight was not a split decision it was a deserved UD. And "many" don't think he lost....the VAST majority of the boxing world understands and acknowledges that it was a close but clear victory for Cotto.
And people overrate this "warrior" term. The TS said Margarito took his beating like a man?

That is not being a warrior, that is being an idiot.
He fights guys that can beat him, He fights CLEAN, He doesn't clintch or hugs, He gives it all in each fight. Maybe you are confusing Warrior with Super Heroe.
End tread with this, imagine if Pacman or Floyd had his heart!!
I really can't believe the T.S. even gave this any thought, the guy goes in the ring and fights his a$$ off, doesn't worry about purse, doesn't worry about Plaster, doesn't worry about PED's, that's not a WARRIOR.
FOR THE GUYS WHO DON'T CONSIDER HIM A WARRIOR, WHO IS A WARRIOR IN THIS ERA?

Cotto is just plain overrated.
DeMarcus Corley
Ricardo Torres
Paul Malignaggi
Carlos Quintana
Zab Judah
Shane Mosley
Joshua Clottey
All top fighters in their respective weight classes, he out boxed Mosley and had shown plenty versatility.
If Joshua Clottey had more pride and heart, you can make a case for him winning. He's physically tough, mentally he falls apart.

If you want sir you and I can sparr I load up my gloves and wear a head gear. you use no head gear and 16 oz gloves. then maybe you would understand why every boxer should be called a warrior
whether running or taking knees.. still continuing and taking punishment.

You've obviously never boxed and don't know what kind of heart it takes to survive some of the fire Cotto has taken and to keep going to win and then in his losses keep going, whether running or taking knees.. still continuing and taking punishment.
Further evidene you've never stepped into a ring and fought is that you don't realize how hard it is to continue boxing with a cut that has basically blinded you for 8 rounds.
A level fighters don't go life and death with Josh Clottey.
Josh Clottey was paid to not hit Pacquaio
outside of that step aside money without stepping aside, he fought like a genuine world class fighter against Cotto, who fought handicapped from Clottey's lethal third fist (head).
Clottey got paid handsomely just like Margarito is being paid handsomely to just show up and let the Pac train moving
