The fact that Kessler is backing out of a fight that is an almost automatic win I believe is a good indication that this injury is not only legit, but also fairly serious.
I am not a Doctor but I don't understand how an eye injury that isn't healed after 6 months is suddenly going to be better after 9 months.
I believe that Sauerland will push for Kessler to fight the winner of The Super Six, not because they think he will be fully recovered, but because they want to recoup some return on their investment.
If I recall correctly they had to pay off Palle for the right to promote Kessler, now it seems they are left out to dry after only 2 fights, one of them an embarrassing loss.
You have to believe that Sauerland expected Kessler to win this tourney going in, at the very least make the final, and ensure 5 good paydays for everyone involved.
There is a long history of fighters returning from eye injuries and being mere shadows of their former selves.
Ray Leonard, Joe Frazier, Lamon Brewster, Israel Vazquez....
I think Kessler should hang up the gloves if this injury is serious enough to sideline him for a year. He is a proud fighter, and he has had a great career, there is no need for him to risk long term damage to return for 1 more payday.
I also believe that Froch-Kessler was one of the best damn fights of the year and a great win for Kessler to end his career on.
I dunno, I remember hearing somewhere that Fraizer was near blind in one eye, and he didn't do too badly.
(I can't actually remember where I heard that, so it could be complete bull)
Because Frazier were stupid enough to continue, then should Kessler risk his own good health, to get respected????
Sounds like you won't respect a fighter, unless he fights till he's half dead.
There are more than a handful of boxers who were already multi millionaires who returned to the sport with less than 100% vision.
None of them needed to do what they did, but fighters fight, and if a guy who likes to fight is being encouraged by a influential promoter to take a big money fight I don't think it's unreasonable that Kessler thinks he can get away with one more fight.
Plus, there is always the chance that he agrees to a fight, gets 75% of the way through camp and the heavy sparring and his symptoms start to come back.
Would he back out without thinking twice? I'm not so sure.
Sure we have seen fighters before going on too long. Of course it's possible that Kessler would do something stupid as well. We'll have to see.
I'm pretty sure Kessler wont be in the ring before his vision is back to normal. Why would he? He is a multimillionaire and doesn't need to put his health on the line.

Muscle problems aren't as bad as a retina detachment for example where vision can get worse and stay that way.
With muscle weaknesses, it is quite common sometimes with kids, that's why they need a patch or are given pen to nose exercises and make them work that muscle until it's strong enough to work together.
Obviously no one wants to fight with double vision, but if Kessler does the exercises, then IMO 9 months is more than enough time. It normally affects close range when you concentrate on reading etc... but I guess in fighting too because that's kinda close.
At the pressconference today Kessler was having double vision and said to a reporter that he saw him double.
That may be the case, and it may not. There is certainly no guarantee that Kessler recovers 100% and I stand firm on my assertion that Sauerland will have strong financial incentive to not only push Kessler to fight again, but also to downplay the severity of the condition.
Personally, I would love to see Kessler make a full recovery, but at the same time am skeptical that he is going to be willing to travel to fight in the future. Surely none of these guys will be willing to go anywhere near Denmark and going on the road against the best fighter at 168, after more than a year long layoff is a tall order, especially for someone coming off an injury like this one.
I just don't want to see the guy forced into a fight at less than 100% because his promoter wants to get his money back.

Kessler is having double vision so no sparring for the next nine months and then he should be good to go again. Kessler himself is devastated. He just kissed his dream goodbye, but then again injuries can happen to anybody. This particular injury is directly related to boxing and is a reminder that this sport isn't kids play.

Ah OK if it's about problems with muscles then he could be getting double vision because the eyes don't correlate together. You can also do exercises for eye muscles.
Yeah. Mikniehenko's got it right.

President, examined Kessler and believes a proper rest is all the “Viking Warrior” needs. “Mikkel said he has been bothered by problems with his vision during the fights against Ward and Froch as well as in the training in the build-up to these fights. There is a weakness of the superior oblique muscle of his left eye. To continue boxing, the muscle needs a proper rest, meaning no fighting or sparring for nine months. After this break, a complete recovery is expected.”
Perhaps you shouldn't jump to conclusion and should know what you're talking about before condemning a man's character and bashing Kessler. I'll take the word of Professor Dr. med Gerhard Lang over yours, call me crazy.
I have that problem, basically means the muscles are weak and cant twitch fast enough to move the eyes, therefore a fighter cannot see the punches coming. (obviously thats dangerous), convergence exercises for the eyes will correct then, and special eye drops that deliver more blood flow to the muscles.
just watch the Froch fight again. Kessler's so blind he's waving his arms around like Jean Claude VanDamme in bloodsport after that Asian dude throws salt in his eyes
watch the last 3 or 4 MK fights... he's been blind... its really kinda scary to watch he cant see anything coming. There has been a huge change as of late. All respect to Kessler.
Plus he has maybe the most B.A. tattoo in boxing way better than tyson's mauori thing
I took a thumb to my left eye when sparring 3 weeks ago. This was my first real eye injury when boxing (and in general), and it wasn't fun. Eye injuries never are.
I went straight to the hospital to get a CT scan. I fractured a bone and I was VERY lucky that nothing happened to my eye other than some swelling and blurriness that disappeared after two weeks. I recently went to do a check-up and the doctor said I was good to go but I'm not sure if I'm stepping inside the ring again this soon.
If Kessler feels something is wrong then something is wrong. It would be stupid to withdraw from the Super Six now without a reason. However, I will not be surprised if Sauerland pushes him into fighting against his own will. They've invested millions on him.
There are no "minor" injuries when it comes to a fighter's eyes.
Kessler and Sauerland will not admit the seriousness of it because they know it could harm their ability to secure future matchups.
Like I said. If it's an eye injury that doesn't heal in 6 months, how the hell does it magically heal after 9?
If he comes back with 1 good eye and gets his ass handed to him it will be a rotten way to end his career.
You're a f*cking retard man.
I never bashed Kessler, nor did I attack his character. If you read the first post of the thread I say he was a good fighter with a career he should be proud of and that I would like to see him retire without doing any further damage to either A) his long term health or B) his lasting legacy as a fighter.
Once again, go f*ck yourself you stupid cunt.
You implied that Kessler along with Sauerland were lying to the public so that they could score 1 last big payday. This entire thread is you attempting to conjure up conspiracies rather than take Mikkel at his word. You're calling him a liar which does indeed speak to his character.
As for the rest, i realize that you must have exerted what limited mental capabilities you possess in order to string together these bulletproof theories of yours but in the future when someone uses facts to disprove your bulls*it just accept it and move on.

Yeah I know, was just saying, if it risks permanent eye damage then he should retire, I would if I was him anyway.
And nobody has chosen to address my point that Sauerland clearly has financial incentive to push Kessler to fight again whether or not it is in Kessler's best interest.
Let's face the facts, Sauerland is not a boxing man, he is a money man, he sees these guys as strictly investments.
Kessler is an expensive investment because he had to pay off Palle, and he has seen only a fraction of the return on the investment that he was counting on when he lured Kessler away.
I think it is safe to say those men had very little choice but to continue fighting, they were also two of the toughest and craftiest fighters who ever lived.
Kessler has a lot more to lose. He can retire now and live a comfortable life.
The argument is not whether or not he CAN fight, but whether or not he SHOULD fight.
And for it's worth Langford lost almost all the significant fights he had after injuring his eye.
Yeah I know, was just saying.
Ahhh yes I remember hearing about Langford now you mention it.
Maybe he was who I was thinking of, or did Fraizer have trouble as well?
Yeah Frazier had some trouble too.
Harry Greb and Sam Langford fought a lot of their careers with one eye.

They are only hoping that rest helps.
In reality he will probably end up having surgery at some point.
Obviously there is a name for whatever Kessler is suffering from, yet curiously they did not elaborate. Most likely because it is worse than they are letting on.

More like the Optician/Opthalmologist is saying stop doing anything that puts impact on your eye to see if it heals.
There's no yes or no to this and time can only tell.
It could be a retina detachment because that is caused by impacts and physical stuff can make it worse. So no sex aswell unless you're one of these lazy guys who come fast
Thanks for the insight.
Especially about the no-sex part.
I'm gonna make sure I keep my retinas firmly attached.
