I'm still not completely sure why so many are giving Segura such a strong chance to beat Calderon.
Dan Rafael always says that there are 3 certainties in life: Death, Taxes, and Calderon by Decision.
And thats how its been for what? A decade?
Calderon ALWAYS wins, and he has fought plenty of VERY good fighters.
I just dont see it AT ALL. Segura is a strong fighter and a strong puncher. Throws well to the body and is surprisingly accurage. He is also ruthless and doesnt seem to care if he gets hit at all. These are all huge positives.
BUUUUUUT, he also isn't very good IMO. He is EXTREMELY wild, not particularly fast, and gets hit LITERALLY at will.
SEGURA doesnt offer anything that Cazares didnt offer in better dosage.
CAZARES had an amazing chin, a huge punch, and was absolutely ruthless in the ring. And even Cazares couldn't close the deal on Calderon even tho he hurt him pretty badly.
IMO, Calderon just uses the ring too beautifully and boxes too smoothly and calmly for Segura to land anything big IMO.
Calderon is getting old tho, so you can't rule Segura out completely, but a Calderon that fights anything like his old self should win this fight pretty easily IMO.
Thoughts?
Also, anyone kno the odds on the fight?
Yea i think his best shot is to, as u said, just bum rush him in the first few rounds and keep trying to score the KO until you can't anymore.
Segura punches himself out CONSTANTLY and he keeps throwing. So he has a lot of heart, it just seems unlikely to me that he does any damage, especially anywhere near enough damage to score the KO.
Calderon has balls too
Calderon has seen everything Segura will bring, I do think Calderon is slowing down, but not enough for a slow one dimensional Segura that doesn't know how to cut off a ring.
There are a couple of things that will trouble Calderon though. 1 is that Segura is a southpaw, 2 his early rounds rush brings suffocating pressure and non-stop punches, and 3 I didn't even know this until I saw it an article, but Segura will have a 4 inch height advantage on Calderon.
I've been saying it from the beginning though, if Segura can't KO Calderon in the first 4 rounds, he will surely lose the next 8 rounds en route to a loss. If his trainers actually gave him a gameplan, instead of being dumb asses thinking pressure will solve everything, he would at least save his rush until the 8th or 9th round.
