Floyd Mayweather Jr: Part Time Fighter
Floyd Mayweather Jr.
First Pro Fight: 10/11/1996
Last Pro Fight: 5/1/2010
Current Career: 14 years, 3 Months, 11 Days.
From 1996-1998: 19 Fights in 3 Years
From 1998-2002: 17 Fights in 5 Years
From 2002-2006: 10 fights in 5 Years
From 2006-2010: 6 Fights in 3 Years
Longest Inactivity: 9 months (5/22/2004 – 1/22/2005)
*Not including retirement*
In order for Floyd Mayweather to exceed his longest Inactivity mark he would have to fight before February 2, 2011. Anytime after that he would set a new mark for his personal longest Inactivity.
Considering the stats as listed up above, it is clear to see Mayweather will probably exceed his longest inactivity mark, and moreso continue his pattern of dimishing his number of fights he has every four years.
If it wasnt offical before, it is offical now, Floyd Mayweather Jr. is offically a Part Time Fighter.
I agree with 2 fights no question. 3 just seems a stretch.
The budget doesn't really come into play for PPV events.
In some cases it does when they aren't very sure how WELL the fight will do, and they may end up eating it if it doesn't do well.
In Floyds case, they KNOW this guys is bringing in nothing less than a million PPV buys... the risk for them isn't there, and they will come out ahead with profit everytime Floyd fights.
Floyd may be gauranteed certain amounts, but he isn't getting a 20 million dollar check before he fights.
Besides, if Greenburg didn't want Floyd to fight twice a year, or they didn't have the budget.. Greenburg would not have been involved in trying to make Mayweather-Pacquiao for fall 2010 after Floyd just fought Mosley in May.
If it wasn't economically viable for HBO to do it, Ross wouldn't have been trying to make it happen.

I'm thinking its not because Greenburg has a budget he has to operate within. Before any other fight is scheduled you have already accounted for $80 mil. Additionally, if the 1st or 2nd fights under perform for whatever reason the next 2 become more difficult.
Any idea what Greenburg's budget was this year?
There are exceptions to the budget.
Floyd is one of those exceptions.
He is netting profit more than any other fighter.
HBO will spend the money to make the money back.
And no, I don't.
Why wouldn't it be?
I'm sure they would love it.
They know Floyd generates profit more than any other fighter out there.
If it was solely up to them, they'd probably rather have a Floyd fight on PPV every other month than anything else, just because of the PPV money he generates, in which HBO partly profits from.
Don't get it twisted... HBO PROFITS when Floyd fights, they don't just pay out expenses without getting paid back plus profit.
The more he fights on HBO PPV, the more HBO makes.
Of course they need to have up front costs to get the ball rolling with advertising and 24/7 etc, but you have to spend money to make more money.. HBO has the budget to spend, in order to profit.

I assume they are HBO PPv's because he is an HBO fighter. Also the 24/7 production for each fight because of the ratings they bring.
Hey Reed, is it economically viable for HBO to have floyd fight 2 times per year right now?

If those fights were on PPV and not on HBO is not viable? How so?
Anyways, that schedule is just insande that Gorilla through out there. Not fighting that schedule doesn't make Floyd a chicken neither does any other fighter. But, money wise it is viable. Since HBO would make a profit and the budget would not be an issue since it would be on PPV. The only time budget is an issue if it is on HBO not PPV.

Just coming in here to say that.
HBO Sports has a budget just like any other business. They would need to commit well over $100 mil alone for 3 floyd fights this year when factoring in production costs, travel, salaries, etc etc. Its just not economically viable.

I don't think so...not yet. He fought in sept then in may. Tht is twice in 2 mos. If he starts fighting just once a year, then he is a part time fighter.
why wouldnt they? they got money. the only problem is floyds heart and detirmination to fight lots of times. he just doesnt have it. its gonna hurt his legacy lookin at all the fighters he never faced ect

Look just lets discuss the point. Chicken and ducking has nothing to do with this.
Does HBO have a big enough budget to put on these 3 fights in a calendar year?

why would they worry about money? u know these fights would sell.
floyd is too chicken to risk his "0" that many times tho

Ok. Is there enough money for HBO to put on these fights? If so, would there be money in the budget to put on any other? You know that from the door you are talking $80-$85 mil just for floyd's guarantee. How much is Greenburg's boxing budget for the year?

He could fight
Manny in march
cotto in july
martinez in mexico in december

Gorilla or Dibushbaby. Lets pretend its January 2010. What 3 or 4 fights could floyd reasonably take this year? Or go back to January 2009. Between then and 12/31/10 What 6-8 fights is it reasonable for floyd to fight?

4 x a year is active
