Why does the mainstream media hold so much negativity towards the sport of boxing? Every time I see boxing on espn with shows like PTI and Around the Horn they always say how boxing is nothing compared to what it used to be and how it is dieing or it is extinct. When Pacquiao vs. Clottey had over 50,000 fans at Dallas Cowboys stadium they brushed it off as it was nothing and when Mayweather vs. Mosley had 1.4 million PPV buys and one of the largest gates in boxing history they did not give the fight any credit. I am really annoyed by that and never really see any positive energy or enthusiasm for the sport.
i remember when don king would have ppv with 3 or 4 world title fights & usually 2 were heavyweight fights.he was the best at one time or a triple header of hw fights with all fights being significant...them days i miss
Because we live in the nanny state. Everyone is supposed to live their lives in a hermetically-sealed, safety glass bubble. Any deviation from this standard is viewed as anti-social, irresponsible and crude. Boxing is a violent contest of wills, brains and skill and it scares the sheeple.
......catchweights......plaster and ped's........
dude, it's cotto fans like you that always be starting shit up in this forum. get over it. EVEN IF MARG "DIDN"T USE PLASTER...HE WOULD HAVE BEAT COTTO. Cotto was hitting him with bombs and he wouldn't budge. And i say "didn't " because its always going to be an asterisk but i sincerely think he didn't use them...and PACQUIAO DOES NOT USE PEDS...he's just a way better fighter than MIguel. get over it and stop whining, nobody cares about those fights any longer, it's history.
Boxing's problems have nothing to do with the sheer ignorance of the mainstream media when it comes to our sport. It doesn't matter how good a fight could be they couldn't be bothered to care. PTI's coverage/opinion of the outcome of the Floyd-Shane fight consisted of the old white guy having a friend tell him the fight was boring while Wilbon didn't bother to watch it also.
Lets not give these clowns any excuses.

Back in my day, you could watch 2 top fighters for free. Now, you gotta pay for it, most of the time, you get shitty undercards.
The decline of the heavyweight division adds as well, the mainstream audience loves to watch heavyweights, the appeal of a Tyson or Holyfield battling it out is far gone.
In regards to the mainstream media it's because of one thing: negativity sells. They are negative about every sport. In football it's high rookie salaries, in baseball it's steroids, in hockey it's lack of tv ratings, in basketball it's crime, etc.
It never ends.
As far as wanting one body control of boxing? Will never happen until governments stop creating the rules and licensing the judges and referees. This point is almost never brought up but it's true. No single body can really establish itself because it will have to abide by each state/countries rules and referees. This has fragmented the sport. If this was not mandated I believe a single body would end up seperating itself by hiring the highest quality referees and the very best judges. This quality would attract the best fighters and best fights because the fans would gravitate toward it and all the other "bodies" would be considered the minor leagues (think NFL compared to CFL/UFL). Until government gets out of the way this will never happen.
