Heard that Showtime is working on a 118-pound tourney, will have Mares, Darchinyan, Agbeko, Perez that will begin this fall #boxing
The bad news.
Montiel and Donaire, were asked to make it a 'Super Six'-type format, but Top Rank balked at entering 118-pd tourney
Format.
Format will be this( for now, what I'm told): Mares vs. Darchinyan and Perez-Agbeko. And winners will meet. More details to come
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Showtime has left HBO in the dust this year, HBO better pull their heads out their asses and make that 140 Tourney already.
I really don't see this at all. I honestly think Agbecko is a legit fighter at 118 and while vic lost fair n square...he didn't look bad at all. I just thought he had the wrong game plan by trying to load up on his punches instead of setting up etc like he did against Mijares. The thing is Agbecko has one of the most underrated chins in boxing and I really don't see anyone knocking him out, which Is why I don't knock Vic for his inability to do so.
As far as the Ceremo vs Vic...I honestly have to see more of him before I'm confident in picking a winner. I have seen 3 of his fights but I didn't pay enough attention to give a proper opinion on how him vs Vic would play out. Give me a few fights and I'll get back to you...but I still don't think Vic would look as bad as people think at Bantam and I actually see him having some success there.
TBH, I thought both he and Agbeko didn't look too good in their fight, it was pretty sloppy in general. Agbeko is a legit fight and he lost fair and square but he didn't look very good, IMO. He's sorta reverted back to the bombs away approach he had. We he does that, he needs to be able to impose his strength and power and couldn't do that with Agbeko. Agbeko did show some decent upperbody movement in that fight though, making Vic miss.
Thought he looked okay in his fights with Rojas and Guerrero. I think his team realize he can't get away with all that loading up and just going for the kill mentality. In his fight with Barcelona, he was aggressive early on, but Barcelona was finding success with his left hand and making the rounds close and competitive. They wanted him to box and set up his punches, and while he did, he was still taking unnecessary punches.
Look for his fights with Mijares, Valdez, and Moreno. Mijares II and Moreno are hard to find, but since you're on the torrent sites you should be able to find them.
Vic's in 100% I confirmed with him last night
I honestly think this is a scenario in which we are promised a steak and end up with a bologna sandwich (I admit this is an extreme view on things). I really want to see the top Bantam at 118 but I truly believe it will be a 4 man playoff similar to the tourney King set up with the MW's a few year back.
My prediction
Vic vs Abner
Perez vs Agbecko
Winners face off and we really didn't get anywhere outside of seeing if Vic is legit at bantam and who is the best fighter out of Perez, Agbecko and Mares.
Vic hasn't looked that good in recent fights though and it also helped that Mijares engaged Darchinyan.
Cermeno would in all likely hood do the exact opposite. Cermeno has the ability to dictate the pace of the fight and get his opponents to chase him. He actually makes opponents look worse than they actually are. I thought Moreno just edged him, but he even Moreno didn't look too good in spots. Did the same to Valdez and Mijares too.

True and I see your point, but I was just looking at this purely form the perspective of making it the most competitive and best available fighters.
If anything, I'd expect Vic to get in and not Cermeno.

A super 6 six will be a dream come true for me, and more than anything fighting the best, and plus the fans deserve fights like this.
Because they overpay the hell out of the guys they have.
BINGO!
Khan already makes a guaranteed $1million+ per fight..how?!
Who has he beaten?..
He's got no fan base in the states..and is hated by many Brits for being a Pakistani/:arabia:
HBO has all the best 140lbers on HBO now and could have very well made a tourney with Bradley, Ortiz, Khan, Alexander, Judah, and Maidana and they're all HBO fighters..(except Judah, but he's no stranger)...
If Darchinyan fought like he did against Mijares, I'd give him a shot at anybody. He always gets too reckless though.

showtime is doing a great job w/ boxing.
even w/ the little budget they have as compared to HBO, they seem to get the job done.
too bad Top Rank & Goldenboy passed up on the tourney ideas. :nonono:
Dawg what does Vic gotta do to earn your respect...lol.
Nah man, nothing against him.
I respect him for what he's done and how he's tried to go about re-establishing himself after Donaire blasted him, I just don't think he'll be very successful at 118 due to his style and limitations.
I guess we will have to agree to disagree. I agree that he has done more at 118 but I still think Vic is a better fighter (maybe I'm being biased here though).
If it happens, get at me. :boxing:
Bantamweight is deep enough and has enough names where you can make it an 12 man tourney. Even if Montiel and Donaire won't be in you still could make it a 6-8 man tourney. That is how deep the best division in all of boxing is.
Showtime>HBO
I also think you can have more as these guys are use to fighter more frequently (on average) compare to guys at higher weight classes.
I disagree with putting in Darchinyan and leaving out Cermeno.
Cermeno has not only done more at 118 but is the better fighter.

he might be but he won't do shit to sell this tourney to the masses
Vic is way more known and way more popular
