BILD.DE today writes that the showdown of the giants has fallen through.
"I presume that the fight between Vitali Klitschko and Nikolai Valuev is off", Klitschko manager Bernd Bönte says.
Vitali Klitschko had offered 1.2 M euros to Valuev. Easily the biggest purse of his career. Valuev wanted it. Co-promotor Sauerland wanted it.
Bönte: "Only Valuev's manager Don King kept giving new demands.
Replacement looks set to be american Shannon Briggs.
I don't know what's up with King.
On one hand he is putting together a St. Louis fight card with 3 world title fights that is probably the most ambitious move by an individual promoter in quite awhile.
Then on the other hand he is turning down millions of dollars to keep a steadily declining fighter on the sidelines.
Bipolar disorder? Dementia?
I don't understand either. There's no possible way for him to find a better exit fight for Valuev than Vitali.
Most odd.
So maybe HBO will pick up Vitali-Briggs then? They might think the quality is better in that fight than in the fight between the linear champion and an undefeated olympic champ.

Briggs can sell a fight, he's big, powerful, and for a couple of rounds, he might actually be dangerous. He will need to train properly and get down to 250lbs at least though, otherwise he'll be in for a long night. A Valuev bout would be even worse as Valuev only has size and nothing else. At least Briggs has the power - and even decent hand speed - however long it may last for.

Yeah. Adamek would be good. Maybe a tad to early for him? That fight could be much in a years time?
I think he has a better chance to win against Vitali than he does against Wlad. Let's be honest, Vitali looked lackadaisical and seemed to 'sleep walk' through his last fight. If Vitali approaches this fight in a similiar way then I give Adamek a great chance to pull the upset. Plus, Vitali has stated that he wants to retire after this year...
I just don't get King's negotiating style. He'd rather sideline his fighter than have him make a great payday. I just don't get the economics of it...
As for Vitali, Adamek is the best choice of an opponent. He's a crafty boxer who's always in impeccable shape and who has actually earned his title shot ( provided he beats Grant). He's also a fellow European who has a huge fan base in the U.S. and in Europe and would generate alot of interest...

This is a real shame if true. I guess King knows that another defeat, particularly a bad one, could end Valuev's days as a cash cow. Trouble is, King won't make much money out of Valuev if he doesn't face a Klitschko. Haye is the only other big fight for him, and given the way Haye is 'negotiating' with the Klitschkos, Haye would probably want the vast majority of the purse were he to rematch Valuev. King/Valuev should take the 1.2m, it's a good offer and would be an interesting fight to watch. Whatever happens, I really hope it is not Briggs, he couldn't hack it and would go into his shell. Might be a good 60 seconds at the beginning of round one, after that terrible.
If this and a Haye fight doesn't happen he should looking at Solis, Austin, Chagaev, Thompson not ****ing Briggs.
LOL you want Vitali to fight people who are ranked by the WBA and waiting for a title shot????
Chagaev isn't ranked by the WBC, he's Haye's mandatory anyway.
Austin was already KOed early by Wlad. Briggs at least has power and is a former world titleholder.
Solis has already turned down the fight.
Thompson was KOed already by Wlad.
Briggs is the best choice given what's available.
Of course Haye, Valuev and Solis would be better, but Haye is chicken, Valuev is managed by Don King, and Solis doesn't want the fight right now (I don't know why).
What has Wlad beating them got to do with Vitali?
Basically you want him to fight all the guys ranked by the WBA who would whoop Haye's ass if he gave them a shot.
Austin and Solis are ranked 1 & 2 by the WBC you know the belt that Vitali has.

Briggs vs. Vitali should be fun while it lasts. :)
Briggs has the power to stop anybody, so Vitali needs to be cautious.
Briggs does not deserve another titleshot and he'll be dangerous for perhaps the first minute of the first round. And then he gasses.
I do not understand King. What can be better for Valuev at this point in his career than a fine purse while fighting for a championship?
I have a slim hope that Briggs name is thrown out as a decoy while a showdown with Haye is being lined up.
