HBO Sports President Ross Greenburg calls the expansion of pay-per-view "the biggest economic issue in boxing" and says:
"I can't tell you that pay-per-view helps the sport because it doesn't. It hurts the sport because it narrows our audience, but it's a fact of life. Every time we try to make an HBO World Championship Boxing fight, we're up against mythical pay-per-view numbers. HBO doesn't make a lot of money from pay-per-view. There's usually a cap on what we can make. But the promoters and fighters insist on pay-per-view because that's where their greatest profits lie."
"It's a big problem," Greenburg continues. "It's getting harder and harder to put fighters like Manny Pacquiao on HBO World Championship Boxing. If Floyd Mayweather beats Oscar, he might never fight on HBO World Championship Boxing again. But if HBO stopped doing pay-per-view, the promoters would simply do it on their own or find someone else who will do it for them."
Former HBO Sports President Seth Abraham concurs, saying, "I think, if Lou (DiBella) and I were still at HBO, we'd be in the same pickle as far as the exodus of fights to pay-per-view is concerned."
The boxing organizations should find some way to broadcast small fights on regular network tv on the regular.
Small fights won't get any ratings on National TV. FNF's only do half a million viewers, if they did that on national TV they would be canceled immediately. The problem is only top fighters will get the ratings necessary to stay on national TV, but no top fighter wants to fight on national TV because they lose out on the money PPV brings in.
I think GBP is getting away from matching their guys up tough now all of a sudden. They've always protected certain guys up to an extent. But they really are giving us bullshit match ups like Marquez vs. Diaz for one. And Khan against anybody but a top 140 lber. And Mosley vs. Mora isn't a good fight either even though I view Mora as a potentially tough opponent for Mosley now.
PPV is always gonna be around because HBO, Showtime, ESPN2, and FSN etc., combined aren't capable of carrying the entire sport. With a limited number of television dates, most promoters have no choice other than to put fights on PPV to keep their stable of fighters active.
Marquez-Diaz II is on PPV likely due to HBO's "budget issues." According to Dan Rafael, they will only have two commenators that night and won't replace Lennox Lewis until next year.
Chavez Jr.-Duddy is a PPV because there's a market for it, and likely more profitable for Top Rank going that route since according to Todd Duboef Jr's PPVs bring in a decent profit.
Should either fight really be on PPV? Probably not. But it's not like the promoters have the opportunity to put the fights on network tv or some other alternative that makes sense for all around.
PPV is garbage no wonder no one knows boxers or gives a shit anymore if the nba and nfl made me pay ppv to watch the bulls and bears I would say **** that. I order about 5 Boxing PPV cards a year and might stop this is ****ing nonsense having to pay for this on top of having to pay for hbo and showtime boxing caters to low income earners way to ****ing ruin the sport you greedy slimy promoters.
Mexican boxing fans make the boxing world go round. They will buy anything with Mexican fighters. So Arum will keep making these bullshit PPV's knowing that fanbase will continue to buy them.
