I am 16 and overweight. I love boxing and I want to learn how to box as well as lose weight doing it. I was wondering what are some decently priced boxing gyms in nyc that have great instructors and programs.
thanks for the replies -EX- and Larry, I really gotta look further into this because this is something I want to give a real effort at while I still can
yo -EX- you know of any gyms located anywhere in the Upper East Side of Manhattan? I would love to try out Boxing but 23 years old is far too late to do anything anymore in Boxing, I'd do it for the love of the sport and just to test myself though
I know people who've started at ages older than you...as far as amateurs a lot of it depends on how much work you put in and how dedicated you are...
Upper East Side? Idk Manhattan too well...Mendez Boxing probably isn't too far from you...Kingsway Gym is good but expensive...$135 a month for group training...they have a website...
Most gyms around there will probably want a good buck to train...
Believe it or not, the dirtiest gyms seem to breed good talent...
Lotta people I know(including myself) don't train in the same town as they live...guy I know lived in Far Rockaway and trained in Staten Island...not sure if he still does...

Well the popular gyms I know in Brooklyn are Starrett City and Havoc Boxing Gym...
From what I hear of Gleason's its a fortune to train there...haven't seen much talent outta there lately either...
Mendez Boxing Club (25 West 26th Street) in Manhattan is a good gym from what I heard...guy training there has won the Golden Gloves 5 times...
Plenty of boxing gyms in Manhattan...and a fairly decent amount in BK...
Lotta gyms will be chargin you tho...the PALS don't seem to go too hard on the cost to train there...they seem to judge it on how dedicated you are...

Some of the best gyms your gonna have to pay to train...PAL gyms like the one I box at don't really charge anything serious...
What part of NYC are u from? I know a ton of gyms in NYC and Long Island...
U tryna compete or just get in shape? They're prolly not gonna stress themselves if ur jus tryna get in shape...
That is the thing that there is a lot of gyms that have boxing to get in shape but they don't have a competitive program

First of all I live in Brooklyn, but I am close to Manhattan. And I am looking to lose weight and then compete once I get in shape and am good enough.

There are not as many boxing gyms in NYC as you think. You can start looking in the PAL's, most of them have a organized boxing program. Also some YMCA might offer the same. If you want to pay like a regular gym it depends what Borough you live in. Aaron Davis opened up a gym in the Bronx and also Juan Laporte
If you wanna be a douche, the reason I am asking because there are so many I don't know which has the best price and best instructor. With so many gyms in NYC you don't know which one is worth my money and which one isn't. Saisfied?
then go look! or go to the training lounge and see what has what..look on the internet some gyms put there prices online! im just saying you live in NYC there's tons of gyms to look at
you telling me you can't find 1 boxing gym in nyc? :lol1:
