Contractual negotiations were taken away and boxers were unaware of who their opponents were? Obviously, as a boxer advanced in tiers of opposition he would only face certain other boxers, but I think it would be terrific if both contestants were guessing as to what style they would face or what strengths to guard against and had to seek out weaknesses to exploit.
Am I alone in feeling this way? What I am getting at is that another element of uncertainty would add to the excitement and thrill of a bout. What do you think?
I like the idea and it would put a stop to the rampant cherrypicking but I doubt there would be as many professional fighters as there are now.
Just imagine, Amir Kahn..............your opponent for tonight is..........and then Maidana comes out and he shits his pants.
That is kinda what I am thinking. Championships would probably change hands more often, but they would be more real, I think.
What about if Vince McMcMahon just made all the fights. Like he'd come to the ring, talk for 25 minutes, then say "Pacquiao, you're fighting...Kelly Pavlik!!!!"
Then all of a sudden James Toney come out and he's like "no no no..." and it becomes a 3 way Chair & Ladder match for the Diamond Belt? And right before Pac wins Floyd could run into the ring and hit Pac over the head with a chair...
Well, obviously some rules would still be observed. Same divisions, number of rounds for progression within a division and stuff like that. But...I guess it would not work well.
It is just that following a strategy developed for a particular fighter seems less fluid...more artificial and less exciting.

Would never work in a billion million years in any sport. Its hard enough to do a super six which takes years to complete.
