There is nothing wrong with Calzaghe. I liked him. As a fan, and knowing what I know from boxing myself, I can't be convinced that Joe's record stands better than Roy Jones or Bhop for that matter. Undefeated.... so what. I appreciate that fine mark as a champipon, but he wouldn't have beat the 2002-2003 version of Roy. Highly doubtful. He would have given a great showing of himself for sure. I just don't think he would have won.
Benn had no clue that Gerald was hurt like he was, he just thought that he was concussed or something and he celebrated as any 10-1 underdog would celebrate such a victory. The outcome ruined Benn's career, he was never the same. He visited Gerald in the hospital and apologized to his mother, and he has had fundraisers over the years for him as well, one recently with Ricky Hatton I believe.
I didn't like GMan outside the ring, and I pushed buttons the other day, but I feel terrible for him. No one deserves that, particularly a warrior like GMan
Yep. That is pretty much what the video was about.
I really hated that fight ....I thought it should have ended in the first round, but it didn't.
It just wasn't the G-man thing either, I was a fan of both fighters. I hated the way Benn acted after the fight seeing G-man on the floor and all.
Benn did show huge heart in the fight though.
After I watched some video on youtube about Benn later in his life, I didn't realize the effect his actions after that fight had on him. It made me a fan again. He was classless after the fight, but as I got older, I could sort of undertsand (heat of the battle and all...And it was a battle for sure). Then after wacthing that vid, even he didn't like how he acted.
Benn has class.

Facts for all you fictional, delusional mental gymnasts.
cal could barely beat an old , past prime , weight drained eubank.
1. roy jones
2. james toney
3. nigel benn
4. chris eubank
5. steve collins
6. joe calzaghe
Bernard signed to fight Joe in the states in 02, then broke the contract and fought Hakkar instead. Joe admitted in the 24/7 he wanted the crown jewels to face prime Roy and Roy said that Joe was way too good for him to fight because Joe brought no money...but those two both knew what the deal was with Joe C.
liar. he never signed a damn thing to fight calzaghe. they were in verbal negotiations. verbal. but hopkins chose to stay with hbo rather than move to showtime. what an idiot right!
I was a Nigel fan, how anyone could watch the Gman fight and not be amazed at the Dark Destroyer is beyond me.

Yeah back then, I used to follow any boxing I could find. Banks, Benn, and Joe were all good fighters.
I still have a good laugh just thinking to myself about the way Chris would pose during fights...Dude was a beast though. The fight(s) that he had with Benn made me a fan of Benn's.

Thats the problem though, Im as British as the next guy but it's true that to be the best you have to go to America and prove it. Collins tried and failed, Benn did it but not against the real ELITES. No disrespect to G-Man but back then RJJR and James Toney were the men to beat. Eubank should have gone abroad and fought these guys. I dont know why it didnt happen, Watson gave a very good account of himself but got knocked out by Mike McCallum.
This is why the Americans will always be able to say their guys were better. Because they beat other great fighters in their primes, Collins and Eubank only beat one or two great fighters in their prime. Im not trying to be annoying about the whole thing but its true...
I'm sorry, but Benn's win over Gman was maybe one of the greatest victories of the moderns era of boxing. Gerald was a monster, he had ever skill and tool you ask for in a fighter and Benn won on pure heart. Had Watson nt suffered that terrible injury I feel he would have been the best of the bunch. As for Collins, that McCallum loss was when he was young and losing to prime Mike McCallum is no shame as every top fighter avoided him like the hiv.
And, bottom line, Super Joe was ducked by the best Americans and beat them when he got his chance, as he would have in years prior. Oh, and I am a yank.
It's frustrating sometimes dealing with folk who haven't actually watched these fighters. That mid-90's generation of British super mids, Bank, Dark Destroyer, Collins, Watson...they were the EQUALS of Roy, Toney, Gman etc. If They had a tourney back then, it would have been like the tourney now, styles dictating outcomes because they were and are all elite.
Joe was a special fighter, people should watch the Bank fight to see how great Joe was at his best.

I dont like him but Calzaghe was a great boxer, I give him his props. I just wish he would have fought guys like RJJ and B-Hop in their prime. I think his resume could have been better than it is, Having said that it's still pretty good.

I have always given Cal his respect. Most folk I know in real life (boxing fans) always look at me crazy when I tell them the man had/has skills.

Plus I also undertsand his hand problems. Hints why he started slapping more than punching.
