Why did he NOT drop the WBC Belt at 160? He wouldve still been the ring champion at 160 anyway.
He also couldve fought at 154 and had something to make people interested in the fight. The 154 Pound WBC belt. Now its gone and he has no belt at 154.
He just pigeon holed himself at 160 where there is NO competition.
At 154 he coulve fought Cotto or Margarito. Martinez isnt a draw himself so now the 154 Pounders have no reason to fight him.
:pat:
Yet he can still fight Cotto and any champion at 154 because rankings are only important for mandatory challengers, which are only required once a year. He can fight any champion at any weight if they both agree, especially now that he`s become a PPV draw after Pavlik, right?
I dont think hes a PPV draw after beating Pavlik. He slowly making a name for himself. Him having that starp at 154 wouldve gotten people like Williams, Cotto or Angulo interested in a fight. But he just pulled a weird move.
Basically passing on Williams and Dzinziruk for Zbik?
Thing is though, considering hes not a draw. Is tat the 154 Pounders now have no incentive to fight him. He has no belt and hes not a draw and will lose his ranking at that weight class.

I agree, this aint a bad thread, but I still think that defeating The Ghost made martinez more marketable even if he drops down again to 154, title or no title. Lineal and Ring titles have already been earned and will never be taken away as his achievements, and he will earn more now in the future by taking the good decision and risk of fighting and defeating Pavlik.
In other words, he has become more popular, and there has never been more clamor for a Floyd-Martinez fight until after that victory.

How is it a bad thread? You dont get the point I'm making here?
He couldve dropped the WBC belt and still been the ring champion and he wouldnt have to fight Zbik, a bum.
Had he dropped the 160 Pound belt. It wouldnt even matter. Hell Chavez Jr. has a chance to be a WBC 154 Pound Champion. The ring and Lineal is what Martinez still wouldve been. Now hes stuck fighting a shit mando. It was a dumb ass decision.

Burner,
Are you serious? You think Bob would put Cotto in with Sergio?
And he obviously still gets plenty props trying to fight at 154 as the RIng Champion at 160. Bad thread. Plus I'm sure Carlos Monzon being the WBC MW champ had nothing to do with it....

I too would have kept the MW title, just for pride and heritage alone
It was his greatest accomplishment and he deserves to keep it. He has said the MW title means alot to him and his people...so why shitting on him? I think being the 160 champ will open plenty of doors if he keeps winning.
You don't watch much boxing do you?
In our country, only potential contenders for Pacquiao and super popular fighters like Pavlik are shown live, and PPV are for rich peeps. So there`s nothing we can do about it.
Your understanding of people and potential situations should be broader.
This makes alot of sense. I didn't look at it from that angle, but looking at it, it does make sense. Problem with that is if May/Pac does go as planned it leaves Sergio out in the cold . I mean he could easily get a fight with Strum, but Strum has been irrelevent every since ODH robbed him.
he can't easily get a fight with sturm. sturm only fights non threatening euros.
I didnt even know Martinez until he fought and defeated The Ghost. So I think belts would not have effect, and he has more popularity than ever, belt or no belt.

Mayweather said a move up to 160 vs Martinez for the WBC and Lineal titles is a possibility(BScene posted that interview themselves). So maybe Martinez is just keeping that in mind, he wants a chance at Mayweather sweepstakes if May-Pac falls through. So in a way, it wasn't such a bad move.

Belts don't mean shit in boxing.
Everyone knows he's the best boxer at 154 and 160.
No hes not................
He's 1-1 at 160 Pounds.
154 is wide open.
I think he wants to establish himself as a Middleweight, His hero is Carlos Monzon and Martinez says the Middleweight title means alot in Argentina and it means alot to have won it. If he can have some successful defences and beat another champion (Felix Sturm) in a unification then he would earn himself alot of recognition. People mention Cotto and Pacquiao but I dont think either of those guys would want to fight Martinez. Looking at 160, People wont duck him because he is smaller than most of them and gets hit (making him vulernable).
Martinez could become the king at 160. At 154 it was hard to get fights.
Arum is not going to make a Cotto/Margarito vs Martinez fight when those are his 2 back up options for Pacquiao in the fall? Willians and Martinez's team said they dont want Martinez vs Williams 2....there are no fights at 154 either way.
BS when did they say that?
Last time i checked they were open to a rematch. So source or GTFO
I thought belts didn't matter, you people always say that. He is famous now, everybody knows he is the best at 154 and 160. He is going to get the bigest fights with or without belts.
Bull Shit, Pavlik would had KHTFO! Hell Cintron had him on queer street with one shot!
Pavlik is a quitter like Cotto is. Paul Williams fought Martinez with cuts just about as bad as Pavlik had and still kept going. And you know what I mean by kept going. Not run to the finish line.
