For me ward is the only man in Calzaghes league and deserves to become the next great 168lb fighter taking the mantle from the Europeans.
Calzaghe asked on Britisher tv was asked do you think Bute is the man to take over at 168lbs and he said no ward beats him and other than himself no-one can challenge Ward.
High praise indeed.
Calzaghe ruined lacy, he would give a good fight and maybe even win against the current super six fighters when he was in his prime
Dirrell is a hype job, no way is he that good. He was on the verge of getting k0d vs abraham and will get k0d down the line soon.
Ward should have been dqd 4-5 times over against kessler, 6 head buts and 4 elbows.
Nobody is the man to take over calzaghes mantle, he was way way way more talented than any super six fighter in the competition right now. Just to compare, dirrell vs froch was a 50-50 fight and we know calzaghe would destroy and school froch. just shows how since the best has retired from 168, the good are now being overhyped
calzaghe would whoop any of them even if he comes out of retirement now, he was just a much better boxer
how was dirrell on the verge of being ko'd?dirrell is the best super middleweight n he will show it when he whoops ward
whoever wins the super 6, will have beaten way more prime top fighters than joe ever did.
Joe easily beats froch. kessler and abraham give him a good fight, dirrell and ward beat him, and bute isn't in the tourney but i think he would beat calzaghe, would be a very interesting fight based on their unconventional styes.
Ward is a special fighter and I agree with calzaghe that he is head and shoulders above the rest. I think the problem he has is that he is gonna have to mix in some exciting performances occassionally in with the boxing displays if he wants to become a superstar.
People who lay in to calzaghe are pathetic. He was a GREAT fighter, and his resume is not as poor as people try to make out. When you look at it as a whole...it is solid, nothing less nothing more. He wasted a lot of the prime years of his career, but quite a few of these years were hampered by back and hand injuries. He would have competed with a prime toney, jones, and hopkins, whether he could have beaten them is a different story and down to opinion. In terms of history I would definitely hold him in the same esteem as toney though, hopkins and jones are a level above in terms of achievement and history.
ward controls a fight better than anyone at smw. bute and dirrell have better physical tools though. if he beats them then he's in position to dominate smw, maybe for years to come.
It's obviously the winner of Dirrell vs Ward. The winner would school Bute and be the best super middleweight ever. I think the winner of this tournament has done way more then Calzaghe's ever done at super middleweight to take that claim.
I mean nobody's going to beat him in defenses, but who were the top guys he beat at 167? Lacey, Kessler, Manfredo, Bika? Bika & Manfredo weren't even good enough to cut the tournament. Lacey was a hype job. And Kessler isn't as good as we thought he was and Ward actually stopped him. Everybody in this tournament is better then Calzaghe's whole SMW resume.
So thats why I believe the winner will be the greatest super middleweight ever but it's up to them to prove that. I doubt they will stick around as long as Calzaghe did even though they can still beat up Pavlik and Bute, but I'm sure they'll want to fight Bad Chad soon. I think they'll be the best QUALITY but won't prove it with number of defenses.

ward in calzaghe's league, yeah rite lol. Bute reminds me of cal a lil wit the quick hands but with more power minus the work rate. I just want the winner of super 6 to face bute(he still will be champ unless dawson comes down)
RJJ would, Toney would, SRR would. Do you want a full list? Hopkins at 4d something barely lost. Do you really think a Hopkins that put the smack down on Trinidad would do that to Cal? Seriously man.
Add one more word..."PRIME"

Dirrell lost to Froch, and Ward has merely won one major fight and only just won a world title.
To say the winner of those two, instantly becomes the best Super MW of the past 25+ years of it's existence is quite simply jumping the gun to the extent it's fucking ridiculous.
2 years ago Carl Froch nor Arthur Abraham weren't much less as fighters to what they are now, and they were never even mentioned in the same sentence, or considered top p4p potential fighters. The division loses a dominant champ, the belts free up, and the best left face the best left in a tournament and loads of people are hyped into thinking it's now suddenly deep. IT's NOT THAT MUCH.
Now I know they've done some good things since ok, but the fact remains they are not suddenly anywhere near the level of Calzaghe.
The same goes for Andre Ward, and Andre Dirrell, it's simply un-acceptable to put someone down as the best ever SMW based on mostly one/two wins, when talking about decades of fighters, scores of top contenders and hundreds of fighters.
It's freaking ridiculous now matter how you dress it up.
I respect and like Ward, but I'm not convinced he'd beat the Eubank Calzaghe did that night, or the Hopkins Calzaghe faced on that night at ANY weight. That's picking a mere two of what yes, could have been a better resume. Still he went undefeated.
Sorry but I'm just sick of such serious deluded over hyping of someone, which is so often sudden and short lived. Similar things were said of Pavlik when he beat Taylor the 2nd time, and the illusion has faded with one crucial thing you fail to properly factor in - the test of time.
No-body in history would "whip" Calzaghe i also doubt ward beats him.
RJJ would, Toney would, SRR would. Do you want a full list? Hopkins at 4d something barely lost. Do you really think a Hopkins that put the smack down on Trinidad would do that to Cal? Seriously man.
Calzaghe is agreed by many, even past top SMW's to be the best ever SMW.
To start talking of Ward as likely to become that, or even clearly the best at SMW NOW even, is seriously pushing it. Very few people were saying as such before the Kessler fight. So you have to accept he's being over hyped on the back of a mere one win.
Still, I do think he's the clear best of the current crop, I'll give him his due.
