Floyd Mayweather’s Drug Campaign Spills Over To MMA

After the negotiations between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s fell apart due to Floyd’s drug testing demands, the whole issue of performance enhancing drug usage has taken a life of its own. While it is a constant issue in most professional sports and is constantly in the media awareness, I cannot recall a time where athletes from a wide variety of sports accusing each other of using PED’s. It seems that whenever an athlete is excelling at one sport, an opponent or fellow athlete is quick to point fingers without any concrete evidence. While boxing has not been as popular as it once was, marquee fighters such as Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s actions can still have a great effect on almost every professional sport out there including its “rival” the sport of Mixed Martial Arts. In an interview with MMAJunkie.com Josh Koscheck stated that people from other camps are saying the current UFC Welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre is on anabolic steroids and possibly a Human Growth Hormone. These two fighters are currently taping the reality show The Ultimate Fighter as opposing coaches and have fought before with St. Pierre winning the decision. When asked further as to which camp supplied the information Koscheck pointed out Former UFC light weight champion BJ Penn’s camp. “From what I’ve heard from other fighters in other camps, yeah, St-Pierre has done steroids and HGH, possibly. This is just on hearsay information that I’ve gotten. B.J. Penn and his camp gave me a little phone call. They were saying, ‘Yeah, he’s on steroids. He’s this; he’s that.’ I said, ‘Yeah, there’s a possibility.’ The guy is pretty ripped all year round.” St. Pierre was diplomatic in his response and stated that he would not be opposed to do an Olympic style drug test to prove he is clean. “I have no problem; anytime he wants. I’m for random drug testing. There’s nobody in the UFC that agrees more with random testing then me. … Anything they want, I don’t care. I give my body to science.” Mayweather may have had alterior motives for wanting an Olympic-style drug testing for his fight with Manny Pacquiao but you can’t argue with his influence.
