If Miguel Cotto Beats Yuri Foreman, will we ever get a chance to see Paul Williams vs. Miguel Cotto?
Bert Sugar (2:08 PM)
Paul Williams is one of those biggest question marks. First of all, we don't know what division he is in. And we don't know what Paul Williams we are getting. He looked adequate against Sergio Martinez. But then again Martinez beat Pavlik, so he's no tomato can. Still, Williams doesn't use his height to his advantage and has disappointed many observers. Therefore if Cotto should win over Yuri, then that looks like a good match for both Cotto and boxing.

In other words he thinks Cotto beats Williams and I agree.

i love miguel cotto (no homo)
but against someone with a high work rate who pressures his opponents like williams, cotto will fold. don't get me wrong it'd be a somewhat competitive fight
if this fight was made pre-margarito however,
i might just have to agree with you.
Head to Head

Conditioning - Paul Williams
Wear and tear - Even
Corner - Miguel Cotto
Look at all of the advantages Cotto would have over Williams.
People make it seem like Cotto got killed for 11 rounds by Marg. He did FANTASTIC for the first 6 rounds and then it just all left, maybe he gassed, maybe it was the plaster or maybe it was both. Either way, a normal wrapped Marg would have gotten outpointed by Cotto, a Cotto who simply clinched after his combo's with loaded Marg gloves still would have won. He can simply use this same formula with Williams.
However, the problem is that Williams as someone said earlier, stays in front of you he doesn't really pressure he keeps some distance and just throws punches. The problem I see is that Cotto would be giving up even more reach than he would for Foreman. It could be hard for Cotto to get inside, however, if he was able to I could see him easily taking Williams. Cotto would get to the body non stop and eventually could get Williams to simply drop his punch rate and hit him in the grill all night. People complain about Cotto's defense, quite honestly Williams has far worse defense. That being said I'd still put my money on Williams its just too much reach to overcome IMO.

M-FER PLZ!
U know just like I know that cotto is going nowhere near PW if he can avoid it! PW has no belt so that means its never happening! U knw this so you spew that ^!
I like both fighters but I do think Williams work rate would give him SERIOUS Problems especially if Cotto still has stamina issues, tomorrow will be a great test to see how good Cotto's stamina is at 154 because if he gets tired against Williams the fight would turn ugly
I think a lot of people are jumping off the Williams bandwagon too soon, I don't even think we have seen the best of Paul Williams just yet
yes miguel's flaws gives paul the advantage over him but the cotto (pre-plasterito) destroys paul. paul would last longer than quintana but wont make it the distance, cotto would break his ribs.
Where did this myth come from? Paul cant take body shots? Since when?
Also Cotto said it was impossible to get to Margs rib cage so how do you think he will get to Pauls bro?
Sugar has some odd views and his predictions on fights are not all that great.
I think Williams is a bad match-up for Cotto and always will be. Maybe Steward is a magic elixer for Cotto but I have to see it against Williams to believe that.
Be honest to yourself, if you have seen Miguel's flaws and his leaky defense, how can that withstand Williams' 80 punches per round pressure? Even if Williams takes a couple of rounds to adjust how can Cotto deal with the physical aspect that Williams will bring too, 6'2 and 80" reach along with the fact that even if he's getting hit he don't stop throwing punches.
The key to beating Williams is lots of lateral movement to reduce his volume and crisp counter punches for every sloppy punch that he throws in route to a decision or late stoppage if such boxer had some pop...that doesn't sound like Miguel Cotto to me, that sounds more like Mayweather...

i agree too if cotto improves with steward in his corner. cotto is on another level above williams if he improve his flaws
I dont think Williams is a better pressure fighter than Margarito. Margarito will make u walk backward. while Williams kinda stand in front of you throwing punches
Like i said before, Williams hates counter punchers and Cotto is a great counter PUNCHER, hits harder than Sergio. Williams ain't Margarito, remember this.
Cotto. Are you serious?!?!?

Cotto is not a great counter puncher.
He does not hit harder than Martinez.
And Paul is a bigger, taller, faster version of Margarito.
Bottomline Paul stops Miguel. It's just as simple as that. I respect Bert just like everyone else, but Bert can be wrong. Didn't he just pick Shane recently?
I've kind of gotten a since that Williams has looked mediocre here lately even though he's showed a lot of heart in his fights unlike guys like Pavlik who tried to quit from being cut. I also don't like of how he is talking about moving down to 147 which is kind of turning me against him. With that said, if he were to beat Cotto, then Miguel's stans shouldn't say jack shit about Cotto being past his prime, and here's why. Williams has taken the same amount of punishment as Cotto has and he hasn't quit yet.
