Add Miguel Cotto to the list of those opposed to Arizona's new immigration law.
Cotto, the former World Boxing Organization welterweight champion, was outspoken Tuesday against Arizona's law, which makes it a crime to not carry immigration documents, while allowing police to question anyone suspected of being in the country illegally.
"You can't treat immigrants, people who move the economy of this country, like that," Cotto said. "They are human beings. They are here legal, but you can't treat them the way people from Arizona want to treat them."
Cotto, who hails from Puerto Rico, was at Modell's in Times Square to promote his new "I Fight for the Flag" shirt as part of Everlast's "What Do You Fight For?" campaign.
Arizona's new immigration law has been the subject of much discussion in the past month with regard to human rights. Numerous groups have protested the law, saying it can lead to racial profiling and poor treatment of minorities. President Barack Obama is opposed to the law, too.
The World Boxing Council announced that it will not schedule bouts for any Mexican fighters in Arizona, calling the law "shameful, inhumane and discriminatory."
"(The law's) going to be trouble," Cotto said when asked about the law possibly presenting problems with boxers not fighting in Arizona. "People get mad to get there because people from there, the cops, the government from there, aren't going to treat them like they need to be treated."
Cotto will fight undefeated World Boxing Association junior middleweight champion Yuri Foreman on Saturday night in the first fight at the new Yankee Stadium. Cotto, 29, said it will be an honor to be at the Stadium and be a part of its history.
"When I talk about my flag, I'm proud of my people from Puerto Rico," Cotto said. "I feel pretty proud to be Puerto Rican and for me to represent them for example next Saturday and make them feel proud and happy when I get the victory over Yuri Foreman."
freeloada, you are 100% right. the law is so vague and it will single out LEGAL citizens that may look like illegals.
Also America wasn't founded on LEGAL immigration you dumbfuk. WTF do you call bringing in thousands of black slaves against their will from Africa, bringing in Chinese to carry Nitroglycerin for digging tunnels because even shaking it would make it explode killing everyone around it.
It's very convenient how Americans are all up in arms over this "illegal" immigration but you look at the history of this country and it's full of foreigners coming here and doing the shit work to make this country great and now we want to classify these people as criminals.
Fuk Arizona, fuk the new law and fuk anyone who supports it.
Cotto just moved up in my book, I'm glad as a fellow Hispanic he understands the struggles we have to go through everyday and the work and what illegals contribute to this country's economy. Illegals are a NECESSITY....
Same here..
You are misinformed the law states that the police have the right to stop you and ask for proof of citizenship if they have suspicion of illegal status. America was founded on "legal" immigration. Not uncontrolled shit that goes on today.
Again being an illegal is breaking the rules.
can you tell us how many immigrant got to the US through ellis island?
I stop reading after this part, just curious what grade level did Cotto finish? Isnt word "illegal" means not allowed, against the law, breaking law, crime?
Dude... please stop bieng ignorant.. Everyone knows Cotto just learned english a couple years ago.. He still has trouble speaking the language. But at least he attempts to learn...
As for desert storm....
Reasonable suspicion will be if for example someone runs a red light, the police officer stops that person and like they are required they ask for ID or DL. Once they fail to provide that then that is a reason to ask for additional documents and well if they don't have them they go from there. A state issued ID or DL is enough to prove you are a legal citizen, if you are a legal citizen why would you not have one?
This is not reasonable suspicion.. this is running a red light and breaking the law.. If you're driving without lisence and registration and insurance you're wrong.. therefor you deserve all the punishment you get..
Now lets say a hispanic was driving and had no papers.. Cop pulls him over asks for papers and proof of citizenship correct?.. Would that same cop ask a white man for his proof of citizenship if he has no lisence or registration like you say?..
I see that as discrimination.. Unless its garunteed that all people no matter what color or race will be asked for proof of citizenship then i will stick by my guns and still believe that THIS IS DISCRIMINATION... regardless of how you slice it my friends..
They are here legal, but you can't treat them the way people from Arizona want to treat them."

You have to love this guy's opinion
Bill Maher for President
This guy is a fkn idiot. Bill Maher for president??? Fk dude, you're prob one of the idiots that voted forBama
Did you watch the video?? What do you think???
I'm from PR and don't need Papers to go to the US just my Drivers license from PR or Passport if I don't have any of my IDs with me like any other American.
Who would you had vote for ? People vote for the one who might do a better job. But I don't vote I hate politicians the same way I hate Lawyers LOL. The all make the world worst

Of course he doesn't want to offend his ppv purchasing latino fan base. In any other country in the world you have to walk around with your passport if you're not a native. You want to know what the penalty is for being in Mexico illegally? 2 years jail, go figures but America is the bad guy.
Correct. I'm a big Cotto fan so I'll forgive his ignorance on this issue. Same goes for Benavidez.
I dont think its that man.. I honestly think its more of bieng discrimination.. Its basically giving people power to question your ethnicity.. How about if they went up to blacks and said are you from Africa? Or white and say are you from England?.. I think its pretty ****ed up considering that America was founded on by immagration.. but thats just my opinion...
It's not discrimination and bad comparison. If you're illegal you're illegal. We're way too lenient...
Im a fan of Cotto but i disagree with his stand on immigration.....
The federal government REQUIRES legal immigrants (green card holders) to carry the green card AT ALL TIMES for proper identification. This law issued by the USCIS (US Citizenship and Immigration Services) is rarely enforced by the federal government as USCIS agents (aside from Border Patrol agents) are spread too thin and are mostly found on border towns. What Arizona did is make a law to enforce it in their state deputizing state police to ENFORCE an existing Federal law.
This is the United States of America and there is nothing wrong with enforcing an existing law. Im not white but i do not mind being asked by state police for my documents if they deem it necessary if they think i broke the law by being undocumented
Hispanic/Asian americans must put their loyalty with America FIRST, then mexico/china/india/dominican republic/philippines SECOND......
I agree... to a point.. but where is the line that you draw?.. How is there a example of suspicion of illegal status? i still don't get that.. that in my book is discrimination no matter which way you slice it.. I agree numerous times on this thread that illegal immigration is wrong.. but so is discrimination... How can anyone possibly tell if you're not a legal resident? wheres the justifiable cause?? I need a reason for a example of suspicion of illegal status yet no one has given me one..

Miguel Cotto needs to keep his mouth shut about things he knows nothing about and focus on not getting humiliated by Foreman.
He just went down a notch in my book.
:thumbsdow
its his opinion man.. everyone is entitled that.. why cant people around here understand that shit ?
Miguel Cotto is a legal immigrant...oh wait, he's American, since we own PR.
Yeah and "we" own NY too, and Texas, and Hawaii, and Alaska....what a dumbass....No point.:thumbsdow
What kind of idiot uses "Mexico" as an example of having a good immigration law. My family is from there and I have much love for my Mexican people but even I know that Mexico is never a country you wanna use as an example when discussing any kind of law.
Seriously what kind of dumbass uses a lawless country to justify their stance on an immigration law here.
Probably the kind of idiot that has to watch Calderon come onto US soil and then listen to him criticize our immigration policies, when they have 10x more strict laws and secretly are happy for every illegal that crosses the border, cuz it mean more remittances.
I love all people..don't care where u are from, but wrong is wrong, Period. So, what about the people that followed the laws? The people that obtained visitors visas and went back to their countries like they were supposed to? So many people are saying t we shouldn't treat illegals like this or that. But what about the people that followed the rules? It seems, THEY are the kinds of people we would want here. What about the citizens that are hurt because of illegal immigration? My feeling is, if ONE American citizen, is hurt, financially, physically..whatever, then its too much, because our politicians first priority is to US CITIZENS.
I dont think its that man.. I honestly think its more of bieng discrimination.. Its basically giving people power to question your ethnicity.. good point... if som1 approached a black person sayin that shti.... mad stuff would happen!
Work harder than you, maybe but my parents came here legally from Guyana in south America. Waited years for visas, waited years later for citizenship, and went through all the proper channels to enter this country. Illegal immigration in my opinion is cheating everybody who does things the right way. Everybody should have the same opportunities no favoritism.
The constitution guarantees rights for Citizens and legal residents. Illegals have no protection under our laws.
if they came legally in the US how come they don't have visas? maybe you meant they came illegally and then applied to be legal immigrants...
I don't even watch TV besides sports most of the time. I prefer to read so stop assuming you know something about me. You can talk about other ethnic groups in the past all I'm concerned about is right now. The law is the law period. Illegal means Illegal no arguing that no matter how you twist it.
If you prefer to read then why in the hell can't you read my posts correctly? When in the hell did I say that illegal immigration was "ok"? My argument is that horrendously undertrained state law enforcement has no buisness trying to enforce what is a federal law by harrassing and even detaining American citizens. My point has and always will be that the Border patrol does a fuking awsome job slowing down illegal immigration and the only thing this bill is gonna do is set back our immigration problem back by 10 years, raise taxes in Arizona, and cause a lot of people to bring lawsuits against a state goverment that barely has enough money to maintain it's own infrustructure. Seriously where you got the impression that was against immigration laws is beyound me. Im just against some shit kicker violating Americans civil rights in order to ensure she gets relected when her term is up.
