Taylor fit, ready for return to ring

LITTLE ROCK — Jermain Taylor says he is refreshed and ready to get back into the ring, and the former world middleweight boxing champion from Little Rock is hoping his former trainer will help him get there.
Taylor (28-4-1) said Thursday he will hopefully begin negotiating with former trainer Pat Burns to help him in his return to boxing.
“We really haven’t had any serious negotiations yet,” Taylor said. “But if I do go back with Pat, I know how he is. He’ll work me hard, and I don’t have a problem with hard work.”
Burns said he has not spoken with Taylor about the situation and did not want to comment until after he had done so.
Taylor, who turns 32 in August, has not fought since Oct. 17, when he was knocked out in the 12th round by undefeatedArmenian-German champion Arthur Abraham in the Super Six tournament in Berlin, Germany. Taylor officially withdrew from the tournament in January, saying his “body and mind” needed a rest from boxing.
After a successful amateur career that included winning a bronze medal in the 2000 Olympics, Taylor made his professional debut Jan. 27, 2001, with Burns as his trainer. Burns remained in Taylor’s corner for his first 25 professional fights - all victories. But before Taylor’s World Boxing Council title fight with Winky Wright in 2006, Taylor replaced Burns with Boxing Hall of Fame trainer Emanuel Steward.
After losing to Kelly Pavlik on Sept. 29, 2007, Taylor fired Steward and replaced him with Ozell Nelson, who has been with Taylor since he started boxing and served as his first trainer.
JT definitely needs a soft touch or two before throwing him back into a major fight. But will those around him be smart/restrained enough to give him the chance to rebuild his confidence? Doubtful. Dibella is not his promoter any more, and it wouldn't surprise me if Al Haymon wants nothing to do with Taylor at this point either, leaving Taylor to be picked up by some promoter that doesn't give a damn about him and only wants him as an opponent for their young, hungry prospect(s).
Lacy is Taylor's only win since 2007, and Jeff is more shot than JT is, just having lost to a club fighter. He looked better against Froch for a few rounds than anyone has since, but that isn't much to build a comeback on IMO.
can't wait to see JT back in the ring. CAN'T WAIT!
alot of ppl are brushing him aside but thats a mistake, he has a reasonable shot of making himself relevant again imo. the only possible problem is his punch resistance, he has been stopped by punchers but hes been stopped none the less. every time someone gets knocked out its easier to knock them out again so we dont know how good his chin will be. if it hasnt got worse by the abraham KO he can still find success. he needs to improve his defense and his stamina but all thats possible, hes staying in shape between fights now and his defense has been improving for a while now (he only gets in trouble when he gets tired).
he should fight miranda or green. him an green both being in the super six that would be a good fight for a undercard in the semis or in the finals. him and miranda dont like eachother at all and that would be a very fan friendly fight stylisticly too. green and miranda would be unable to turn down that oportunity, especially considering taylors been stopped 3 times and twice in a row and they are both real good punchers. still i think taylor would beat them both. then he shold take it from there.
let my also just say ppl worrying about brain damage are worrying for nothing, i mean boxing is boxing but taylor is no more at risk than anyone else. ppl get braindamaged from having long wars when they take lots of punishment over 12 rounds, not by getting flattened by a single punch or combination.
its the wars that create brain damage not the KOs and taylor hasnt been in that many wars. its cotto, margarito, the marquez brothers and maybe even pacquiao that should retire if u fear for fighters health.
Go Jermaine!
I hope he gets away from the sport without getting too hurt. He is too good of a guy to have ill effects on his brain.
I always thought he had a future in sportscasting. He speaks great and really knows boxing.
I think after the long break he can comeback and compete at a high level. He was doing well against Froch and Abraham before getting bombed out, it happens. He isn't shot imo, but he should take a few tune-ups.
I agree, if given proper time to gain his confidence back against the right type of opponents I think Taylor could be relevant again.
However, the way boxing works I don't think he will get the chance to take it slow.
I worry about Pavlik and Taylor returning to the ring because I think HBO would put incredible pressure on their handlers and promoters to feed them to Lucian Bute before they have time to get their confidence back.

I like Taylor, but DAMN didn't he make enough money?
Does he want brain damage or something? He should retire and enjoy his riches.
Brain Hemorrhage. He is finished. Never allowed to fight again.
Maybe.
But with his history of fading late he might get in trouble if he can't get Miranda out of there early.
Jesse Brinkley and Vitaliy Tsypko are also good choices.
Before Pavlik stopped Miranda this was a fight many wanted and Edison was talking a lot of ****. I think their styles would make for an exciting fight and Miranda would help to sell it with his mouth. I dont think at this point of his career Miranda poses enough of a threat to make Taylor avoid him.
Jermaine Taylor fighting at this point is really worse than Roy Jones and Jeff Lacy continuing with their careers even if he has the ability to fight on a higher level than those two. I don't want him to be another Levander Johnson, and that's what we may be headed for unless the commission and the fans do their job and protest him fighting. I've never seen somebody come back from a KO of the type that Taylor suffered and end up not getting hurt again. Look at Courtney Burton, Meldrick Taylor, Terry Norris, and countless other guys. Jermaine Taylor is in that same boat almost.
I think he still has enough left in the tank to beat a guy like Miranda who is a big puncher.
Maybe.

Librado Andrade is exactly the type of guy not to fight for Taylor right now, don't need to fight someone with an iron chin, good stamina and who almost always comes on late in a fight.
maybe Enrique Ornelas would be a better opponent
im a big JT fan and if pat burns can keep the dancing and excessive movement to a minimum, maybe his stamina issues will decrease beacuse that is where he loses his energy.....that, nervousness, and basically taking punishment without throwing hard shots to keep guys off like he used to...not just a jab like somoene else said.
Taylor should stay the hell away from punchers.
He should target Robert Stieglitz, Andre Ward, and Dimitri Sartison.
Of course tune-ups are in order first.

Jermain Taylor vs. Edison Miranda would be good comeback fight, or even Lucian Bute
I dont think Bute would be a wise choice for Taylor right now but Miranda would be a fan friendly fight that Taylor could win.
If Burns can turn him back into the Jermain Taylor that was the banger with the missle jab...maybe.
I dont know who turned him into the dancing, jab only, points victory minded KO victim waiting to happen. But it SUCKED watching it happen.
Granted, the fighters that he beat the piss out of: a shot William Joppy, Daniel Edouard, Roul Marquez were guys MOVING UP in weight.
And ever since he started getting in the ring with actual 160lb or 168 pounders he either won on points or got KTFO.
So I have my doubts. I feel that if he sold out and went out there to destroy guys, he has the speed, talent, and reasonable power to impose his will and actually do it.
But nothing over the last few years reassures me that that fighter is still in there. And If he is the same tentative, just out there to survive JT....he is just going to get crushed again.
