If you had to to pick just one, which factor should be the foremost priority to any individual boxer who decides to fight professionally - the salary earned throughout the entire career as a boxer, or the legacy left behind and the accomplishments in the ring?
If I was a boxer. Id only fight for cash.
Screw the fans. They didnt show up when SRR and Joe Louis dide broke. They also dont care that Tommy Hearns is broke.
This right here..................
This is what I don't get.
Boxing is a sport. Sports are engendered by ability, entertainment and competition. So as sports fans we absolutely reserve the right to reward people for all three facets I mentioned, and criticise fighters who do not.
This isn't farming or manufacturing.
And I often perceive it in the same way, that boxers should prioritize the sporting element rather than the financial rewards and that those monetary gains may eventually materialize as a natural consequence. But, due to the high level of danger associated with boxing, it does fall into a high risk category separate from most other sports and therefore it's understandable that a participants approach to it would be effected as a result.
Fighter's that work on legacy eventually end up getting a big money fight along the road.
It usually goes hand in hand. Big money fights = fights with the most legacy.
Biggest example right now is FMJ vs Pacman, of course.
Seriously though it's all about building up a fight. I'd imagine Juanma vs. Gamboa will be huge in a year or two, but if they fight in a few months they won't make as much cash.
It's up to the promoter to know how long to let a fight cook and the appropriate time to serve it to the fans.
True, it's easy as a fan to under-appreciate the career aspect of boxing but a job is a job and most people would rather earn money with the least amount of risk to their future in reality.

People have money problems because they are bad with money.
I don't have any stats but I wouldn't be surprised if there was little or no correlation between income previously earned and likelihood of bankruptcy.
So I answered legacy. It is not that I don't believe boxers should maximise the money they get for putting themselves at risk, but at the end of the day I view boxing as a sport, and in all sport legacy rules.
Plus, there is nothing stopping fighters building up a pension whilst they are fighting...many do.
Money. Look at how many fighters throughout history ended up with money problems. Boxing is extremely dangerous and offers no 401k plan.
But as a fan, it doesn't do sh!t for me to see fighters fight low-risk/high-reward fights. I understand it, but I don't like it.

Depends. Boxing is a job. And Boxers sure enough work for their money. Depends How your mind works. Because Money isn't everything. You DONT need money to survive. Some people just wanna be the best they can be at their profession. Can't knock em for that. I'd like the money, but when you have so much who cares? I'd rather have ppl remember my name in 100 years
fukk legacy..when you're old and broke legacy aint gone pay for shit!!!!!!!!!!!
Larry, money comes with the legacy.
Guess what you fight for money but are stupid with your money you will die broke with no legacy.
You fight for legacy and are stupid with your money, you will die broke with legacy.
You fight for money and are smart with your money, then you will be rich with no legacy. But, you don't take that money with you when you die. Nobody 40 years from now will talk about your ass.
You fight for legacy, money comes. And, if you smart with your money will die rich. But, went you can't take that money with you when you die. Your name still lives on, you might even be looked as upon god like status and your family will carry that name with pride.
It is legacy. Because, with legacy you have both.
If you're a fighter, you fight for legacy. Money comes with the legacy.
Legacy does not come with the money.
And, as long as you're smart with your money, that money you make will last your and possibly even your kids lifetime.
half the top 10 p4p make less than a million a fight

"Pretty Boy" Floyd always yapped about money all the time too.
Yup but IMO not as much now.
if you're living in a cave, and ppl are asking for your services, maybe it's b/c they can get it cheap.
:D. OK. It's an opinion and that is my belief. If you have a different one and you chose money. I can understand that. A study on 10 successful persons ( I can remember them all )
1. henry ford
2. sochioro honda
3. thomas watson
4. aristotle onasis
5. paul getty
6. john rockefeller
7. condrad hilton
8. ray croc
9. walt disney
10. steven spielberg
showed they first value the "services" they provide which would mean becoming better in their chosen field, developing a good reputation ( akin to legacy ) and the end result was more money on their end.
Are you a professional athlete? Or aspire to become one?
No. No. I'm a professional though and those are principles that I apply. Like I said it is a belief and what I stated is my opinion on what I value most. I've had several colleagues who are in engineering just for the money, there are far and few who were successful.
Boxer's first priority is most of the time money. I understand that. But the question's premise ... if I, meaning my personal choice, become a boxer what would I prioritize.
legacy is great but remember boxing is a job for them fighters we all work to provide for our family and to make us comfortable for our future life first get your money sorted then if u have time enhance your legacy
As far as I'm concerned money is a part of your legacy. I'd rather my grand children's children have enough money to pursue their dreams than appear on a highlight real 30 years in the future.
