Okay why after all these years does Paul Williams still not have a good jab? why does he still give up his height? Why does he still lunge forward with his punches? Why does he still have serious defensive liabilities? Why does he still have no power on his so called power punches?
I know I've criticized Paul Williams in a thread or two but considering how many times we go over the same sh-t with Floyd and Pac...uh you get the point.
Paul imo is basically heart and determination but that wont get him as far as he thinks it will. In his last 2 fights vs Martinez and Cintron, quite frankly he sucked. He may have won but from what we've seen there really is nothing to fear from this guy, he doesn't match his "most feared" moniker.
So to this I've decided not to blame PW but his trainer, this is a guy he's been with since he was a kid and its time to move on. I think PW could benefit from a trainer like Emmanuel Steward, Manny is good working with tall, rangy, long fighters. Perhaps he can teach Paul to not give up his natural advantages. Maybe he can develop his jab and his straight left. Do for him how he did for the Klits and Hearns.
So based on his lack of skills I disagree with any "expert" who has PW as P4P #3, he may be in the top 10 but he has a long way to go in the skill department before I rank him that high.
I think that poster was talking about his style.
Name me some fighters that you think Paul should have faced by now.
I dont question his opposition just his abilities, they are, for lack of a better word, overrated. As a fan of this sport I am more into the performance and ability of fighters not necessarily who fought who, who ducking who, whose afraid of who, I am into the art of fighting, its poetry to me.
Tommy was graceful in the ring, and when he brought the power it was a thing of beauty. I just see PW in need of fine tuning, he needs to look and move more like a fighter...I just dont like his balance, he is hard for me to watch.
Ha, try telling that to those who are trying hard to make him just that. "most feared" Now Hearns, yeah that title works, Paul Williams, not so much.
What is there to fear? Him flicking you with a backhanded jab? His head breaking your fists?

You are who you are, he isnt gonna suddenly become Tommy Hearns

No Cielings I'm not saying he isn't a good fighter, certainly he is an obstacle for any opponent, I just see more heart and determintation than actual ability or talent. And many fighters replace their trainers when they've basically gone as far as they can go. Peterson cant make him any better than what he already is, I think he will need to get better if he expects to beat the best of the little men, or any fighters who are bigger and stronger.
I get what you saying but what he is what he is and it works.
Burner is right in some ways, probably like people are right about Katsidis not needing a new trainer unless its Atlas... If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Sure you can tweek stuff to make the fighter overall better, but trying to change them too much could also ruin them. Who ever tried to make Gatti into a jabbing boxing failed at that when Gomez ran him over!

I actually think Mayweather vs. Martinez will be next and in the meantime Paul will fight Dzinziruk in the fall.
nah....i defintiely think they find a way to get may-pac done this time.
it was a huge "letdown" last time. may found a way to "salvage" the first half of the year by doing the mosley fight. if they can't get it done this time, there's nothing that either guy can do to make up for it. it'll be an even bigger letdown that it was the first time.
i think cooler heads prevail, and they come to some sort of a compromise. it's acutally good that we're not hearing anything about negotiations. hopefully they're taking this shit seriously, and will keep it out of the media, until they're ready to announce the fight.
I don't duck no one, y'nah'sayin', but to be honest, me and my trainer gets it done. No need fixin' it, if it ain't broken, y'nah'sayin'. But, I will say that my trainer kept me out of the Olympics, y'nah'sayin', with the diet I'm on.
If he'da lemme eat a chicken sandwich, I know I could have taken that Gold at Super Heavy, y'nah'sayin'?
I think Steward would be perfect for him to teach him how to use his height and get full power , but I think after looking at P-Will try to box, it is too late for that. Peterson waited too long to try to finally teach him how to box.
I know think Ronnie Shields would be a perfect trainer for him, he will keep the same pressure style, but definitely improve his defense, balance, and head movement.
hopefully they can get it done now. i don't think either guy has any fights lined up. i'm loving a rematch.

He offered Martinez the rematch and he offered Martinez more cash then he made vs. Pavlik.
Williams ducks no one.

he definitely should've given martinez a rematch...martinez-pavlik should not have happened.
other than that, i agree, can't say williams has "ducked" anybody, but that doesn't make him a great fighter either.

The guy is a winner. Plain and simple. He lost to Quinatana came back and took care of business in one round.
Who do you think Paul should have fought in the past? Give me some names.

Would Roach be a good trainer for Paul?
No not really. Hes too busy.
The best trainer for him would be Steward. But honestly Paul is what he is. Hes not getting rid of Peterson so its a moot point.

Anyone can be 39-1 when fighting soft competition for 35 of those fights. Against his best opponents, Margarito, Martinez, Cintron, did he really perform well at all? Was that P4P stuff you witnessed there? You can make an argument that all 3 of those fights were a draw. And despite the rematch I wont even mention being outboxed by Quintana.
Um no you cant.
Margarito a draw? Really man. You cant crap on his opposition when so many guys have wanted nothing to do with him. Including Mayweather.
