The (as yet mythical) tournament at 140lb, Junior Welterweight division, is something most people who follow the sport would love to see. Following a similar format to The Showtime Super 6, lets assume the current boxrec top 5 JWW's are included:
1.Timothy Bradley
2.Amir Khan
3.Devon Alexander
4.Marcos Rene Maidana
5.Victor Ortiz
6. ? TBA ?
Which boxer do you believe would make the ideal addition to complete the tournament line up?
Some might consider Ortiz a questionable addition to the tournament so, if that's your view, feel free to mention an alternative 5th boxer too. Roach has stated that Pacquiao is staying at 147, so he can't really be considered for this unfortunately (and of course it wouldn't work out because Roach trains Khan too.)
Just some examples in the poll, but there are plenty of other possibilities too. Berto made the statement suggesting that he would consider moving down to 140lb for a tournament, and Katsidis may well consider moving up as he's fought at 140 and above before.
Update May 19
From the poll the 3 main contenders right now:
Michael Katsidis // Lamont Peterson // Andre Berto
suggestions via reply for :
Juan Manuel Marquez // Zab Judah // Ricky Hatton // Juan Urango // Floyd Mayweather Sr. (!) // Juan Guzman // Jose Miguel Cotto // Ricardo Torres // Manny Pacquiao // Edwin Valero (!) // Ali Funeka // Lucas Martin Matthysse
Interesting to see that a LW is winning the poll for inclusion in the LWW tourney.
I think it may be because Katsidis would make any match up entertaining due to his style and he has fought at LWW before. The only others who fought within the LW limit were Khan and Ortiz - Ortiz some time ago but Khan just left LW less than a year back. Bradley, Alexander and Maidana never fought at LW though. Maidana actually fought at WW before and Alexander even fought at LMW once I think!
I know everyone wants to see Pac/Floyd but why not put Pac in the convo for this tourney? .. last time i checked he was still the Ring champion for 140.. If he bitches out about drug testing and Mayweather finds another excuse and the fight breaks down then i think Pac should take on a tournament like this... :boxing:
If Berto could do the weight with no problem I would go with him and making him the favorite. Peterson has a lot of skills, Judah would be like Jermain Taylor by bringing an experienced recognized name to the tourney. Joan Guzman is also a good name if he can make the weight but he is un-reliable.
Kat don't think would do good, a few possible barn burning match-ups but I think he will come on the short end which he has already in his big match-ups. JMM is in the final stage of his career and don't know how much he would have left to go deep into the tournament
There are a few dark horses: Casamayor, Kotelink, Witter, Urango, Funeka, Matthysse and Torres. This division is very deep and anything is possible
Basically, y'nah'sayin', they needa let me in that piece. I get it done, and if I skip one more meal of oreo cookies and swishing around water and spitting it out, I know I can make that weight limit, y'nah'sayin'. Ain't no thang for me to move down and punish them boys n' stuff and get the job done, y'nah'sayin'.
Zab Judah...
Zab Judah would work if he could make the weight. The problem is he hasn't fought at 140 since 2003 so he could end up weight drained but it'll probably be much easier for him than Berto who never fought as low as 140, his first pro fight was at middleweight I believe.
If Berto can get to 140 and still be himself, then him.
I like Katsidis, but his skills would not translate well to a move up to 140 against either 5 you posted. He'd have a decent shot against them ,but he'd have to walk through some serious firepower to beat them. I wouldn't favor him over either one.
If Mike Alvarado can beat a lower Ring top 10 contender, he should get looked at because the man can fight.
I'm a huge fan of Katsidis, but Peterson would handle him all day.
Peterson don't get the props he deserves. And bradley don't get the props he deserves for beating him the way he did. That was more impressive a win than Floyd over Mosley IMO.
I like the idea of Katsidis. What about Guzman? Or JMM? How about Ricardo Torres? Juan Diaz? Jose Miguel Cotto? Juan Urango? Judah maybe?
I think most of them guys have a chance at beating 1 if not more of the fighters you listed
