the change Hector Camacho went through after going through that war with Edwin Rosario, Camacho was floored and was taking a beating in some rounds but managed to eek out a decision win.
But he became a MUCH more defensive fighter after that fight, pre-Rosario he liked to go to war and PUNCH but after Rosario something about his style changed.
Ortiz looks like he's gone through exactly the same thing, after the shellshock that was the Maidana fight he's content to hold back just, he might be safer and he'll probably win alot more with this style but he won't gain as many fans.
i agree. he was always a patient fighter. only time he really lost his patience (outside of his DQ) was vs maidana cuz he was drunk with his own power and got suckered into a war that shouldnt have happened.
but even before the maidana fight, he was more patient in a different way. he was still more of a patient stalker with economical, accurate power punches. he's making a more conscious effort to be patient from the outside, which allows him to control the tempo and engage when he wants to.
Yeah, I was watching his fight against E. Clottey and, to me, it basically enhanced the fact that he's extremely patient. Against opponents with that Clottey style, you see fighters putting up career highs. Ortiz put up around 40 puncher per.
They put up a CompuBox analysis of Ortiz before the fight and it showed that he only averaged 39(?) punches per even in the Maidana fight.
The kid has almost all the tools, but even though he won every round, he showed a glimpse of his weak mental makeup. A couple of times in the mid-late rounds when Campbell started landing his right hand, I saw an uncomfortable look on his face. It looked like he could crumble at any second.
He'll have fans with that style. Mexicans love him, I liked him at one time but its kind of boring and safety first. I just hope he doesn't get super cautious like that against fighters who can't punch like Paulie.
no kidding, i dont think he's sacrificing much power for boxing. he still hits hard so his style will produce KDs and KOs.
Ortiz is the same fighter he's always been, just with a lot more foot movement, a bit more jabbing, and he now remembers to stick to the gameplan.
He's always been very, very patient just look at some of his fights before Maidana. Just look at the punch stats even in the Maidana fight. Campbell almost drew him into a war and he looked like the Ortiz inthe Maidana fight again, but he stuck to his gameplan.

Ortiz is such an incredible talent but he goes out of his to land power punches instead of working behind a jab.
He has incredible accuracy for a young fighter. I read somewhere that on average his power punches land at around 40-50% thats HUGE. Now he's working behind a jab but not commiting to his power punches unless he's certain they'll land. He'll still throw them but not with the same conviction because he's so concerned about his chin.
That bothers the heck out of me man. Maidana still has Ortiz's soul, I really do feel that way. Ortiz should atleast understand that you can't expect to be overly agressive and not get hit with a HUGE shot. His performance last night wasn't exactly entertaining.
Never said he was shellshocked read the post, infact I said he'll probably win alot more with his new style but it wont draw him as many fans....
I wasn't singling you out specifically I just think that phrase is being thrown around too loosely on these forums.
And by the way, his style isn't really all that new he started his career as a boxer/puncher anyway..
I don't think he can put up with being hit much few times Campbell hit him to the body and head he looked really bothered by it. So its a good idea for him may take awhile to get it down tough. He did good but he looked uncomfortable fighting that way also.
It was a nice performance from Victor, short snappy punches and that left hook was there all night.
Granted Campbell looked every bit of his 38yrs, but still a good performance.
I still don't find this "shell shock" theroy many of you speak of. The man pitched a shutout last night.
Let's give him his due respect...

Victor Ortiz should take note of Fernando Guerrero. Guerrero (an agressive southpaw) has looked vulnerable in the past, but instead of changing his style he polished it. Ortiz should have done the same. It was never that there was anything wrong with his technique, all he needed to do was be more patient.
