Letter from Kermit Cintron to Boxing Fans
PRESS RELEASE-Dear Boxing Fans,
I want to clear the air about what actually happened in my May 8th fight with Paul Williams. There are a lot of rumors floating around and I want to set the record straight.
About thirty seconds into round four, Paul Williams lost his balance and started falling to the canvas. Our bodies got tangled and while Paul just hit the canvas, my momentum carried me through the ropes and out of the ring. His falling is what caused me to be off-balance and all I could do was brace myself for impact.
As I fell from the ring, I think I landed on a TV monitor. That collision actually knocked the wind out of me. When I fell from there onto the floor people immediately swarmed around me. I was not exactly sure what had just happened. My only concern was trying to catch my breath.
I didn’t really know who all the people were around me. I was looking for my corner and my personal doctor, but they were not allowed near me. The ringside doctor kept his hand pressing down on me telling me to stay still and on the ground. He was concerned that I might have cracked my ribs or punctured my lung. I guess the fall looked worse than it was. I was sucking wind due to the impact of the fall and the doctor told me not to move. I simply listened to him and remained still. I told the doctor that I was ready to fight and that I just needed to catch my breath. I never said I didn’t want to continue.
California law states “A contestant who has been wrestled, pushed, or has fallen through the ropes during a contest may be helped back by anyone and the referee shall allow a reasonable time for the return.” These rules were not followed. I was not allowed any help from my corner and I was not given time to return to the ring. I was simply told to stay still and then told that the fight had been stopped. I told the doctor several times that I was fine and that I could continue the fight.
As I was being taken away from the ring against my wishes, I heard it announced that Paul Williams had won a split decision. I didn’t understand then, and I still don’t, how anyone could have watched that fight and thought that Paul Williams won.
I trained for 8 weeks to get ready for that fight and I was controlling it in every way. I was on my way to a career defining victory. The fight was going exactly as I had planned. Everything was going my way. I am the one who actually buckled Paul Williams with a right hand. He did not hurt me at all. Moments later, because of a freak accident, he was awarded a win and I got the loss. I know I did not ‘lose’ that fight. There is no way. I controlled every round. Paul said he was open to a rematch and I think that’s the only fair way to settle the score.
I know everyone was looking forward to a great fight between two of the premiere 154-lb fighters in the world. I’m sorry it was cut short but there was nothing I could do about it. For 3+ rounds I set the tone of the fight. The action was starting to pick up when our freak accident occurred. I’m hoping you will want to see us do it all again. Paul Williams is now telling anyone who will listen that he can make 147 lbs. and would like to fight there. I can make that weight as well. Let’s start what we finished. We started it at 154 and I’m fine finishing it there or at 147. Paul said he was open to a rematch. I hope he’s a man of his word.
I’m ready to get it on.
Kermit Cintron
there is no way in hell a fall like that knocked the wind out of him, sorry, not buying it for one fvcking second.
first off, he's an athlete, a boxer at that with a wrestling background, he's in fvcking shape, not only in shape, in FIGHTING shape, you mean to tell me, that a rolling spill took his wind, that is what cintron is trying to claim.
i call bullshit, his body has been trained for impact, has been trained for punishment, and he had taken bigger shots than that fall and he said it knocked the wind out of him yeah fvcking right.
i've taken harder SLAMS than that on my skateboard as a kid and only had the wind knocked out fo me twice, both times i fell roughly six feet and flat on my back, i've ate shit on and wrecked and been slammed 100's of times and my body was nowhere near as trained and conditioned as his........... bullshit......
for whatever reason, cintron bailed on the fight, as soon as he went through the ropes, he had it made up in his mind that the fight was over. whatever fight he had, it got washed away when he went through the ropes.
he didn't even try and make a case for himself and the doctor has even come out and say that cintron said he couldn't continue twice.
i don't like the cali commission or the over control the doctors have there, but none the less, whatever the doc and cintron says, cintrons body language said it all........... he wanted to opt out the fight!!!
i've seen old ladies fall in public harder than that without bracing themselves and been fine, a well trained and conditioned athlete got the wind knocked out of him on a roll, gtfoh..........................
a rematch probably is in order, but i dont want to see it and i wouldnt want to give kermit a rematch after what he pulled.
btw, i think kermit wins a rematch.
I want to believe him he was clearly beating Williams there was no reason for him to quit. But one question remains why did he stay on the floor and let himself be strapped to a stretcher? If he really wanted to fight he should have gotten up, told the doctor to shove the stretcher up his ass and told everyone else involved to go fuk themselves.
PS: Everyone who thinks he jumped out the ring are clearly retarded or has Paul Williams dick down their throats, in burner's case it is both.
That's my problem with this entire ordeal as well. I'll let conspiracy theorists argue his exit from the ring, but there's no way anyone other than his lawyer and Cintron himself can argue that he gave any indication whatsoever of wanting to continue.
I've always referred to Cintron as a camera-ready fighter. He looks the part, plays well on a promotional poster and all that. It seemed like once he knew the fight was over, he was ready to exit on a stretcher just so he could raise his fist to the crowd to solicit cheers.
Of course, that never happened since he doesn't have a fan base, and is instead forced to deal with the aftermath.
Personally, I think they should fight again, but as part of the same pay they received on May 8. Neither one of them earned their paycheck that night, and should be forced to give something back - either their pay or their in-ring services.
Well Kermit should had done a case for him in at least attempting to get up and not stay so immobile on the floor. Karma is a bitch, I guess this evens out the Martinez draw
If what he says is true and it went down like that, I understand. At the same time though, if I knew I was ok, I would have went against the doctors wishes and gotten up because I knew I was ok.
The doctor was only doing his job and was making sure Kermit wasn't seriously hurt, a broken rib, punctured lung or broken spine.
If kermit knew he was ok, he should have gotten up and jumped back in the ring. By laying there on the ground, he made it seem much worse and forced the hand of the doctor.
I don't care if you controlled 4 rounds - a fight is 12 rounds!
Kermit should never get to fight on HBO again. He's a little bitch.
Is that you in your av? Would u beat Kermit in a 8 rounds fight?

nobody in their right minds would believe that kermit cintron jumped out to quit, i know this was a freak accident cause if you wanted too quit, you woulda just went down on a knee or say no mas, the people who say that you jumped out too quit were all rooting for williams
