Check this video out. My mate showed it to me..this guy was before my time but wow i am stunned by his reflexes....watch him dodge 10 punches vs a prime oscar dela hoya...the old version gave floyd a lot of trouble.
Also floyd did well..but hey he looks much better beating an old man than a young one that's for sure.
Pernell is the man...his reflexes are insane
Pernell made defense as much fun to watch as offense. His defense is certainly more flashier than Floyds and pleasing to the eye especially when watching highlights. By comparing the two you are comparing a great flashy defense vs a great fundamental defense. But what you have to look at is not whose defense is more pleasant to watch or wows you but which defense caused a fighter to get hit the least, while making their opponent pay for their mistakes. What Pernell had was a gift from God, thats not something that you can teach to someone much like you can't teach someone height. Floyd's defense is more fundamental and took years of schooling, patience, the right techniques and being disciplined. Granted there were no compubox stats back then to tell you the exact amount being landed on Pernell it is safe to say that from watching his fights that he got hit more than Floyd does.
They are both masters in their own right as they both mastered the art of defense but on the etreme opposite sides of the spectrum, one with flash and the other with fundamentals. I can't say which is better as its based on preference but if i had to choose one i would choose Floyd's defense because he got hit less and his is more effective in the sense that he makes you pay with every missed or blocked punch whereas Pernells was more flashier and you would miss period.
I love Finito but IMO, I always thought that Sal Sanchez have a better skillset. And he did that against Gomez and Nelson. That may be biased though because Sal is one of my fave fighters along with KT. Lolz.
You right about Salvador Sanchez. He was amazing and he did beat better comp than Finito.
Didn't Floyd suffer a broken nose once? I might be wrong but I know he was leaking against Augustus.
And, lets be real that was a passed prime Whitaker against a prime Oscar. And, I had Whitaker winning that fight.
Now for you second point. I know I am in the minority in this one. But, I could have a fighter skillset. Especially from the modern era. It would be Ricardo Lopez. I just love his style, his skills. I just thought he was a perfect fighter. Too bad he was so small...

where was this great defense against Oscar?
De La Hoya landed 146 of 363 power shots to Whitaker's 72 of 192.
And what about the rest of the fight, what about total punches, nice way to just put in power shots.
Pernell won that fight it was close but definite win for sweet pea. The reason oscar won is the crowd went ape-sh*t whenever oscar farted, let alone punched.
Pernell was a greater all round fighter, he threw combinations, countered well (not as much as flyod) wasn't afraid to get in there and could finish well.
I had heard before that he fought like Whitaker during the time that he trained Pernell. But looking at the video he looks more like Mayweather today.
Yea he looked like Floyd in that video.
What active fighter does Benton remind you of?
His style looks very familiar.

see this is the thing, guys like ts have there opinion, and I'm sure that in sweet pea's day someone said the same about pep.
its all about opinion, now, its clear that pea is one of floyd's idols ( i think he mentioned pea and aaron pryor as his heroes growing up) and as much as i admire pea, he didn't have the speed floyd has. so i gotta go with floyd on this one.
pep, pea, and may are cut from the same cloth though.
I LIKE SWEETPEA AND FEEL HE GOT ROBBED IN THAT FIGHT (w/ delahoya), BUT IF I am not mistaking after the fight they had him and delahoya come on that show on hbo back in the day and talk about the fight, sweet pea had a black eye. Floyd has never had a black eye. But I like them both equally.
but if I could be a fighter or I had to pick a fighter to have skillset, I would pick FLOYD.
Now SWEETPEA IS A VERY CLOSE SECOND IF NOT EQUAL WITH HIM.

All they need to do is download Pernell's stuff. If you love watching Floyd's mastery, then without question you'll love watching Pernell Whitaker. I believe that they've seen very little of him/ or when he was past his prime.
Agreed. I would recommend Whitaker -Haugan,Ramirez 1and2,and Roger Mayweather to start. Whitaker-Pineda was a masterpiece. Poli Diaz, the Buddy Mcgirt rematch, the Julio Cesar Chavez fight, I can go on and on.
...
Fair enough; but you have 6 fights of his 140. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying they weren't great fighters, but can that relatively small sample of his career be representation enough to proclaim his defensive superiority over Sweat Pea or Floyd? Not to me.
I wouldn't claim defensive superiority but I'd put him at that level. Mayweather, Whitaker, Locche, all were almost impossible to land punches consistently on at their peak. As a fighter I don't rate Locche among the greatest but he accomplished quite a lot despite having no punch and doing little training for his fights, which is a testament to how good he was defensively as he went 117-4 against solid opposition.
The differences in defensive mastery and effectiveness are marginal at best in my opinion. Statistically Whitaker may have been hit more than Mayweather but then again he was also more aggressive and threw approximately 800 punches on average, while Mayweather throws about half the amount of punches. Whitaker could afford to be more offensive, as he could avoid punches even at close range, while much of Mayweather's effectiveness comes from him thinking defense at all times and never putting himself at risk.
In my view the greatest defensive fighter of all time is still Willie Pep, although without an extensive amount of film on him it's difficult to claim that his defense was truly the best. However, like Mayweather, Whitaker and Locche, and unlike Ray Robinson, Henry Armstrong and Harry Greb, who were offensive fighters, his style was defense first and in my opinion Pep accomplished the most with that particular style. I won't say that his defense was any better but there isn't a defensive fighter more accomplished than him as far as I can see.
Whitaker was the master of defense in his time and Mayweather is for his era. An argument can be made for both!
I like Money May's style more because of his counterpunching
Totally untrue. Some of you are exposing yourselves as limited when it comes to the topic' of Pernell Whitaker.

Whats the point in dodging alone? Floyd goes to defence to offence, Pernell was great but focused almost only on D

dude, do u exist just to troll ppl???i mean come on, ppl are in here arguin facts but ur there makin general statements that make no sense. floyd isnt the poor man's anything. he's his own man. his skills are unique and like nothin b4. him and pea are comparable for their defensive mastery but their styles are not comparable
Well said man.
ofcourse they do......so does calazaghe.........so does vargas........................theres a line (a subjective line) that is thats seperates it..................imo.......floyd has nothing on PEAS defense..................based on the number of possible greats/hofer he fought................and his performance...........................do you understand????
Stop posting. You're radiating stupidity.
