Doug Fischer: "Floyd doesn't have the size and range as Winky or Forrest"

I love Doug Fischer as a columnist and an announcer. As an accurate fight predictor? No thanks.

From Doug Fischer's latest mailbag (Apr 28, 2010) ------------------ My “boxing acumen” (LOL) is the reason I’m picking Mosley to win. My prediction has nothing to with any disdain for Mayweather. If that were the case I would have picked someone else to beat him by now. But I haven’t. And that’s because I respect Mayweather’s skills (if not his careful self-management). It’s also because I respect Mosley. Yes, I remember well what Forrest and Wright did to Mosley (and I disagree that Shane didn't make adjustments in the rematches, which were more competitive than the first fights). I don't believe that Mayweather can do what they did. Not because I think Mayweather isn't as good as those two excellent boxers -- he's better in a pound-for-pound sense -- but because I don't think he's as big as they are and it's obvious that he has a different style. Mayweather does not have the range that the late Forrest had with his jab and he does not commit to his right hand the way the Viper did (nor does his right hand have the power Forrest's did). I do not believe that Mayweather is as effective at 147 pounds as Forrest was. I know Mayweather isn’t as effective at 154 pounds as Wright was, and neither was Mosley. Shane just found that out the hard way -- by actually getting in the ring with Winky. It says here that if Mayweather fought Wright at junior middleweight the same thing that happened to Molsey would have happened to him. Wright was way too big, strong and technically proficient for Mayweather to cope with. Mosley was durable and game enough to make their first bout competitive for five rounds. I don't even think Floyd could have done that. It's silly to compare Mayweather with these rangy 6-foot-tall technicians. It's even sillier to regurgitate Floyd's "There's-no-blueprint-to-beat-me" mantra. The blueprint is in his first fight with Jose Luis Castillo, a bout that he was lucky to win. It's in his victories over Zab Judah, Oscar De La Hoya, and even his knockout of Ricky Hatton. Floyd’s a defensive marvel but he’s not untouchable. If you don't have a sharp boxing mind, you won't see that fact, and if a fighter doesn't have a strong will and self belief he won't be able to take advantage of that fact. Contrary to popular thought, Mosley does have a sharp boxing mind (and trainer Naazim Richardson only enhances it). Mosley's will and self belief is as strong as any fighter who has ever laced on a pair of gloves. He proved and Doug was wrong. THEY ARE CALLED "PREDICTIONS" For a reason. If we all knew mayweather was gonna win, they wouldnt have made the fight

Actually, I like it that Floyd took a whole different path to beating Mosley. He did it diffeently tham the other guys. Effin greatness. No he didnt't. Look at what VF and WW did. They made shane fight. They didnt let him hold or rest. All that jerking & bouncing burns energy. ssm likes to bang then take a break, either hold or get out of range. In each of those fights he wasnt allowed to do either. Notice him gasping for air early? Physical and mental fatigue. Thats why he dabbled in that epo. The game is more than just fists and feet. Its the subtle things that win major fights.

I understand the point he is making and Floyd would not be able to beat Mosley the exact same way as either man, the only thing to take from those fights though for this fight is that Mosley could be frusterated when not allowed to do his thing. Now maybe this came totally from being the smaller man, but Mayweather is excellent at frusterating his opposition so I have to think he can bring that out in Mosley by his own means. I think Floyd wins because he is the better overall fighter but if you like Mosley's chances Dougie's case is probably the best one to make.

i gotta agree that floyd doesn't fight like winky or forrest, but he presents his own challenges and problems.

There are many areas where Floyd is better than Winky. Jabbing isnt one of them. lol, I didn't say it was better than Winky's. I said probably and I said effective not just all out the best. Floyd's jab does what he wants it to do and it doesn't fail. So it is effective. Ya know?

Cotto didn't have the reach of Winky or Forrest. He doesn't even have the reach of Mayweather. So what does that mean for Shane when he is going up against a guy who probably has a more effective jab than even Winky? There are many areas where Floyd is better than Winky. Jabbing isnt one of them.
