Is this at the discretion of the fighter, or is there a standard custom of payment? What does Freddy Roach or Roger May walk away with after a mega fight?
25% to uncle Bob, 5% to Oscar, 10% to Roach, 35% to the IRS, etc.
Pac is getting played.
I thought Pacquiao avoids the IRS by training outside of the US for a number of days (ie Cotto training Camp in Baguio)
99% of trainers get a % of whatever the fighter earns which like some people have pointed out happens to be 10% (Depends sometimes), Its has been suggested though that Maybe trainers should be on a yearly salary with fighters but the problem is some fighters go through a year without fighting so how are they suppose to pay the fighters?
Pac is pretty dumb I have to admit
I wouldn't really go that far. Pac sees Freddie as like family from what I've seen, so he would want to make sure that he is well taken care of anyway, much like how I am sure that Roger is well taken care of. Don't worry about the house that Roach and Roger live in they are well taken care of.
I'd assume Jack Loew gets a nice figure from Kelly Pavlik and probably the same with Birmingham and Winky. Those guys all seem close to their trainers.
The once accepted norm was and still is a flat 10%. But the top fighters who earn millions don't like to pay 2-3-4-millions for 8 weeks training. I don't blame them.
So what they do is they come to an arrangement with the trainer b eginning at about 3% for the huge earners.
Freddie Roach was smart enough to hang onto Manny P. and talk him into believing that he NEEDED him, so, as I recall, was able to firm up a 10% fee, which, because Manny was ignorant and overawed (at the time) he agreed to, so The Roach rolling in money, doesn't even spend a cent on razor blades.........
If Manny was a different sort of fellow he'd have renegotiated the deal, although maybe he has. These guys, pretending to be "poor workingmen trying to "put food on the table for the family" (a favourite excuse of "poormouthers") very often end up in the position of having much more money in their accounts, than the guy who earned most of it for them.
And, since they are not the "heros" but rather in a "menial sort of position, they have no appearances to keep up, can dress and and live the way they want to.
I hope that fighters are allowed to claim much of their personal appearances, showboating and lifestyle spending, as Income Tax expenses.
If they can't that's not fair.................\
Just my opinion

So lets say Jose Benavidez who is an up and coming fighter pays 10% of the purse to Roach? Or Amir Khan V Salita?
I often wondered if the Boxers paid the coach directly out of thier own pockets or via thier promotors. Bob Arum is Jose Benavidez promotor, I doubt Benevidez could afford to pay Roach the kind of money he would want for his time. Perhaps Bob Arum pays on his behalf?
He might be charging Arum a flat fee to train Jose right now. His fee will go up to 10% when Jose becomes a star and starts sellings PPVs.
I dont know what he must spend it on though, his house looks like shit. Floyd cant be paying him much.
Yeah, he lives in a regular condo. He probably saves up all his money.
Roach gets 10% and Roger might get 10% or a few millions.
